In EveryWatch’s January–June 2026 secondary-market dataset, Rolex had the larger sales total, while Patek Philippe had the higher average value-retention measure. These findings answer different questions: Rolex dominated reported sales by value, but a reference-level average relative to retail is not the same statistic as the share of references selling above retail. Neither result predicts what a particular watch will fetch.
How large are the Rolex and Patek Philippe secondary markets?
EveryWatch’s H1 2026 Secondary Market Report aggregates reported activity from 650 dealers and 472 auction houses. It estimates $10.5 billion in worldwide secondary-market sales from January through June 2026, up 37.2% year over year, across 795,000 watches sold, up 18.7%. These are reported market estimates, not audited disclosures from the brands.

Within this dataset, Rolex’s reported secondary sales were substantially larger. The figures describe aggregate dealer and auction-house activity; they do not establish the value or demand for any particular model.
Which brand holds value better?
EveryWatch reported Patek Philippe’s average value retention at +75.4% and Rolex’s at +6.12% across the major brands it analyzed. Its measure compares the average secondary-market trading level of a reference with retail MSRP. The report separately found that 75.86% of Rolex references traded above retail, the highest share among the analyzed brands.

These statistics are not interchangeable. Average value retention describes how far above or below MSRP references trade on average; the percentage above retail describes how many references clear that threshold. A brand can have a lower average premium but a larger proportion of references above retail. Neither figure means every watch from that brand sells above its original retail price, and neither is an individual resale quote.
What do liquidity figures tell a buyer or seller?
Across the whole market—not specifically Rolex or Patek Philippe—EveryWatch reported a $5,900 median sale price, a 55% sell-through rate for listed watches, and a 43-day median time to sell in H1 2026. The comparable median time was 39 days in H1 2025. These market-wide measures provide context, but they do not establish brand-specific liquidity or predict how quickly a particular listing will sell.

- Provenance and any notable ownership or production history.
- Geography, currency, and sale date, since market conditions and buyer pools vary.
- Whether the number is an asking price, a completed dealer transaction, or an auction result that includes buyer’s premium.
How does Rolex Certified Pre-Owned fit into the market?
EveryWatch estimated Rolex Certified Pre-Owned sales at $385.4 million in H1 2026, up 101.3% year over year and about 9% of Rolex secondary-market sales. This is a reported estimate for that channel and period, not a measure of the full supply available to buyers. A CPO listing is a specific watch with its own price and condition; the channel’s scale does not guarantee a suitable model, price, or outcome for every buyer.

For any certified pre-owned purchase, assess the individual watch, its documentation, condition, seller, and terms. Rolex’s official collection and Patek Philippe’s official collection can help identify brand collections, but a current collection page is not a secondary-market valuation.

Exceptional auction lots illustrate how widely prices can diverge with reference, rarity, condition, and provenance. Phillips reported that a stainless-steel Patek Philippe Ref. 1518 sold for CHF 14,190,000 in November 2025, describing it as a record for a vintage Patek Philippe wristwatch at auction and the most valuable timepiece sold at auction in 2025. The same year, a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 6263 sold for CHF 1,391,000, according to Phillips’ 2025 year-in-review. These are results for particular watches, not benchmarks for either brand’s typical resale value.

At its May 9–10, 2026 Geneva sale, Phillips reported a total of CHF 74,846,995, with 224 of 225 lots sold. Selected results included CHF 7,961,000 for a Patek Philippe Ref. 2523 and CHF 3,242,000 for a Ref. 6002G-010. The sale’s scale and these exceptional lots are documented in Phillips’ release; they are not typical prices for comparable-looking watches.
Even within one auction, individual outcomes vary: Phillips’ New York Watch Auction: XII results for June 7–8, 2025 include a Patek Philippe lot at $1,066,800 and a Rolex lot at $254,000, each including buyer’s premium. The lot descriptions identify the specific watches and their circumstances, which is why an auction figure cannot be transferred directly to another example of the same brand.
Which market measure should you use?
- To compare market scale: use reported secondary sales and share of value, noting the reporting period and dataset.
- To compare resale against retail: distinguish average value retention from the proportion of references above retail.
- To judge a specific watch: compare the exact reference, condition, completeness, provenance, location, sale date, and transaction channel.
- To assess a price: separate asking prices from completed transactions and account for auction premiums where applicable.
EveryWatch’s H1 2026 figures are retrospective aggregates, and Phillips’ headline lots are exceptional auction results. Neither supports a promise that a Rolex or Patek Philippe will appreciate or reliably retain a particular value.
