Choose based on how you need to time: align-and-read for a quick interval, or start-and-stop for an event. Neither mechanism is universally more accurate or better.
How does a rotating bezel work?
On a watch with a minute-marked rotating bezel, align the bezel marker with the minute hand when the activity begins. As the hand moves, read its position against the bezel to see elapsed minutes. Orient describes its bezel as displaying 60 minutes per rotation; that is a scale specification for the cited guide, not a general guarantee for every watch. Check the particular model’s markings and bezel direction.

Everyday timing with a bezel
A bezel can suit tasks such as cooking, parking, or tracking game time, examples Oris gives for its diver’s watch. It is most straightforward when the task fits the watch’s marked range and you want to check elapsed or remaining minutes without operating a separate timing control.

How does a chronograph work?
A chronograph uses pushers to start and stop timing. In Oris’s instructions, press the pusher when the event begins and press it again when the event ends. The elapsed interval is then read from that watch’s chronograph display. The controls, display layout, and timing capacity vary by model, so use the watch’s own instructions to start, stop, reset, and read it. Oris’s operating instructions describe its watches’ functions; they are not a universal specification for all chronographs.
Which is better for your timing task?

Duration, whether you need elapsed or remaining time, scale readability, and ease of operating the controls are useful criteria when choosing between the two. The cited manufacturer instructions establish different operating methods, not a universal ranking for accuracy or performance.

Important limit for diving
A diver’s unidirectional bezel is designed so that accidental movement cannot make the indicated elapsed dive time shorter. But its display is only a guide: Grand Seiko instructs divers to verify actual remaining air. Do not use a bezel as a substitute for dive instruments, planning, or training, and follow the instructions for the specific watch. Grand Seiko’s bezel instructions explain this limitation.
