Samsung’s regional websites listed the Galaxy Watch FE before the company formally announced it, exposing the watch’s name and a few basic details. The pages appeared ahead of schedule, but Samsung did not publicly confirm that the early listing was accidental. The watch was announced on June 13, 2024, and its U.S. Bluetooth model was scheduled to go on sale June 24.
What Samsung’s early pages revealed
On June 7, 2024, Samsung’s U.S. business site reportedly displayed a largely blank product page that named the Galaxy Watch FE. It showed a 40mm black Bluetooth model, including model number SM-R861. Samsung’s French site also included the watch in a Galaxy S24 promotion: eligible purchases and mobile-line activations could receive it as a gift. The reported offer ran through June 30, with registration for redemption available through August 30, 2024. These details were reported at the time by Android Headlines.
The pages exposed only part of the picture. SM-R866 was reported as the expected LTE model, and the listings suggested that a launch was close; neither point amounted to a complete product announcement. Rumored pricing and specifications circulating before the reveal were likewise not confirmed by the early page.
How the leak became an official launch
Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch FE on June 13, 2024. Its U.S. announcement scheduled the Bluetooth version for June 24 and described U.S. LTE availability as forthcoming; availability and timing could differ elsewhere. The listing therefore preceded the formal announcement by six days and the scheduled U.S. Bluetooth release by 17 days. Samsung’s announcement supplied the specifications the early pages had not.

Samsung also promoted sleep tracking and coaching, body-composition measurement, workout tracking, fall detection, ECG-related capabilities, Camera Controller and Samsung Wallet. These are not guaranteed to work identically with every Android phone: feature access can depend on the paired phone, region, software and regulatory approval. Some health tools require a Samsung Galaxy phone or the Samsung Health Monitor app. Samsung’s Italian product and business pages describe regional and setup qualifications, including enabling fall detection through the Galaxy Wearable app on a compatible Galaxy phone: product page and business page.
Why the Galaxy Watch4 comparison matters
The FE was Samsung’s first smartwatch to carry the Fan Edition label, but it was not a clean-sheet hardware platform. Its Exynos W920 processor, 40mm format and broadly similar display, battery and sensor profile closely track the Galaxy Watch4. Contemporary reporting characterized the FE as built heavily on that 2021 watch’s foundation; Samsung’s own announcement confirms the FE specifications, not that it is simply a renamed Watch4.

That reuse helps explain the lower-cost positioning, but it also tempers expectations. The FE offered familiar Samsung health and Wear OS features in refreshed styling and a lower-tier product slot, rather than the newest processor or a major generational leap. Its single 40mm size also favors buyers who want a compact watch over those seeking a larger display or case.
What the price turned out to be
Before launch, reporting put the expected price near $200/€200, but the early listing did not establish a final U.S. price. Samsung’s U.S. MSRP files later listed $199.99 for the 40mm Bluetooth model and $249.99 for the 40mm LTE model. These are historical U.S. MSRP figures, not verified current prices; see Samsung’s October 2024 wearables MSRP file and March 2025 wearables MSRP file.

Was the reveal actually accidental?
The observable event is clear: Samsung’s own regional pages exposed the unannounced product, and at least one page was reportedly incomplete. What is not established is why. Samsung did not publicly say that an employee or publishing system made a mistake, and regional product pages or promotions can be prepared in advance. “Premature listing” is supported by the evidence; a proven accident is not.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who the FE made sense for
At its launch positioning, the FE was most compelling for a first-time Samsung smartwatch buyer who wanted a compact Wear OS watch and Samsung health features without paying flagship-model pricing. It was a weaker fit for shoppers seeking newer hardware, a larger case, or the longest practical runway from a current platform. Buyers should also account for feature requirements tied to Samsung phones and apps, rather than assuming that every health function is available on any Android device.

Bluetooth is the simpler choice if the watch will usually be near its paired phone. LTE can provide more independent connectivity, but costs more and may require compatible carrier service and activation. At either model’s historical MSRP, a discounted newer Galaxy Watch could be a better buy if its price is close; compare actual current prices and the specific features you need rather than treating the FE’s original MSRP as today’s price.
