Verdict: The Samsung Galaxy Ring is an excellent discreet sleep and wellness tracker for compatible Samsung Galaxy owners, but it is not a smartwatch and it is expensive for its limited workout features. Its best reasons to buy are comfort, Samsung Health integration and the absence of a recurring Galaxy Ring software fee. iPhone users, serious athletes and anyone who wants live metrics should skip it.
Samsung US listed the Galaxy Ring at $399.99 when checked on August 18, 2026. That is a high upfront price, although it compares differently with subscription-based smart rings. The original Engadget review, published July 26, 2024, gave it 80/100 and called it “a bit basic, a bit pricey”—a verdict that still broadly fits.

What does the Galaxy Ring do?
The Galaxy Ring is a passive health and wellness tracker, not a miniature Galaxy Watch. It records information in the background and sends the useful version of that information to Samsung Health on your phone.
Its core functions include:
- Sleep duration, sleep stages, sleep scores and sleep trends
- Blood-oxygen readings during sleep
- Overnight skin-temperature trends
- Heart-rate data
- Steps and general movement
- Automatic detection of walking and running
- Walking and running metrics such as distance, speed, cadence, calories, heart rate and heart-rate zones
- Energy Score and Wellness Tips through Samsung Health
- Samsung ecosystem features such as finding the ring’s location
- Double-pinch controls for selected Samsung-phone functions, subject to device and software support
There is no display, vibration motor, audible alarm or on-ring notification system. That makes the Ring quiet and unobtrusive, but it also means your phone must provide reminders, explanations and feedback.
Design and comfort: the Ring’s strongest argument
Comfort is the Galaxy Ring’s central selling point. The size-7 unit tested by Engadget weighed approximately 2.3 grams, making it notably lighter than the Oura rings compared in that review. The reviewer found it comfortable while sleeping and barely noticeable during normal wear.
That matters because a sleep tracker is only useful when you actually keep it on. A watch can feel bulky in bed; the Ring largely disappears. The trade-off is that the sensor LEDs may be visible in a dark bedroom, and a ring is easier to misplace than a watch. Samsung’s location-finding features can help, but the Ring cannot make a sound to guide you to it.

Fit is more important than appearance. Fingers swell during the day, and a loose ring can reduce sensor contact and undermine readings. You may need to experiment with finger choice, particularly if one finger becomes uncomfortable overnight. Water, lotion, sunscreen and hand washing did not stop the reviewed unit from recording data, although some users will still prefer to remove jewelry during wet or messy tasks.
Order the sizing kit first. A comfortable fit should be secure without becoming tight when your fingers swell. Treat sizing as a data-quality decision, not merely an accessory detail.
Sleep tracking is useful, but not medical-grade
The Galaxy Ring does its most convincing work overnight. In the original hands-on testing, sleep and wake times appeared accurate to the reviewer, and the Ring even detected a midday nap. Samsung Health also did more than display raw numbers: it provided sleep scores, graphs, comparisons and explanations of what the measurements meant.
That presentation is a meaningful advantage. A sleep score is easier to understand when the app explains changes over time instead of simply showing a collection of sensor readings. Skin-temperature tracking can also become more useful once the app has established a personal baseline.
There is an important limitation, however. Consumer wearable sleep stages and oxygen readings should be treated as wellness estimates, not clinical measurements. The reviewer saw highly variable blood-oxygen readings depending on which finger the Ring was worn on, including a reading as low as 76 percent. The reviewer attributed the problem to a loose fit and stopped treating that metric as reliable on the test unit. That is a hands-on observation, not proof that every Galaxy Ring behaves the same way.

Do not use the Ring to diagnose sleep apnea, illness or another medical condition. Do not change medication or treatment because of one unusual reading. If you have a health concern, discuss it with a qualified clinician and use appropriate medical equipment.
Activity tracking: good for walks and runs, limited beyond them
The Galaxy Ring is best described as a general activity tracker with limited workout coverage. It automatically recorded walks and runs in the original review and supplied more detail than expected, including distance, duration, average speed, cadence, calories, heart rate and heart-rate zones.
That is enough for casual walkers and runners who want a record of daily movement without wearing a watch. It is not enough for people who expect a complete training platform.

Weak for
- Strength training
- Cycling and structured endurance sessions
- HIIT and varied gym workouts
- Swimming workouts
- GPS-dependent sessions
- Live pace, heart-rate or performance feedback
Oura’s software was described in the original comparison as supporting automatic detection of at least 40 activities at that time, giving it a broader activity profile than Samsung’s launch-era implementation. That does not make Oura a smartwatch either, but it highlights the Galaxy Ring’s narrower fitness ambitions.
The most sensible setup for an active Samsung user may be a Galaxy Ring plus Galaxy Watch: wear the Ring continuously for sleep and everyday movement, and use the Watch for workouts and live information.
Why it does not replace a smartwatch
The Galaxy Ring cannot replace a watch because it lacks the features that make a smartwatch useful during an activity or throughout the day:
- No screen
- No notifications
- No vibration alerts
- No audible alarms
- No on-device workout controls
- No live exercise metrics
- No broad standalone functionality
A Galaxy Watch is the better choice if you want pace, heart rate, maps, calls, messages, timers, payments, GPS or real-time workout guidance. Samsung’s US MSRP document listed the Galaxy Watch8 40mm Bluetooth model at $349.99 and the 44mm Bluetooth model at $379.99; those are December 2025 MSRP signals, not guaranteed September 2026 sale prices. Samsung-phone compatibility is decisive
“Works with Android” is not the right buying question. The important question is whether you own a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone and are willing to use Samsung Health and a Samsung account.

Samsung states that Energy Score insights require a compatible Samsung Galaxy AI phone, the Samsung Health app and a Samsung account. The original review also noted that several AI-powered features—including Energy Score, sleep tracking and Wellness Tips—were tied to Samsung’s ecosystem.
Separate the requirements into four categories before buying:
- Basic hardware compatibility: whether your phone can pair with the Ring.
- App and account requirements: Samsung Health and a Samsung account.
- AI-derived insights: features such as Energy Score may require a compatible Galaxy AI phone.
- Model-specific functions: controls such as double-pinch may depend on particular Galaxy phone generations or models.
The original reviewer stated that the Ring did not work with iPhones. Launch-era double-pinch support was initially limited to selected Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models, with broader support expected later. Because software support can change, do not treat that launch limitation as a definitive current model-by-model compatibility list. Check Samsung’s current requirements for your exact phone before purchase.
Samsung Health is half the product
The sensors are only half of the experience. Samsung Health determines whether the Ring feels insightful or underdeveloped.
Its strengths include clear sleep explanations, useful trend graphs, comparisons and integration with Samsung watches. Its weaknesses are mostly practical. In the original review, enabling the main Auto detect workouts control was not enough: the reviewer also had to open the separate Activities to detect area and enable walking and running individually.
If workouts do not appear automatically, check those individual activity toggles rather than assuming the master switch failed. Location tracking also required additional settings, so permission and location configuration should be checked when route or finding features do not behave as expected.
Multi-device use can be useful but confusing. Samsung Health may combine Ring and Galaxy Watch data when calculating Energy Score and recovery guidance. An erroneous workout recorded by the Watch can therefore affect the resulting recommendations. Review which device logged an activity and delete false entries when necessary.

Samsung advertises up to seven days of continuous use. The original Ring had an 18mAh battery, and the hands-on test found it generally below 20 percent by day six and nearly dead on day seven.
That makes the realistic expectation closer to about six comfortable days, with a seventh day possible if you are willing to run it nearly empty. Battery life will vary with ring size, settings, software, temperature and usage.

The charging case is the practical advantage. Samsung said 30 minutes could restore about 40 percent, and the reviewer saw a small increase after a short charge in the case. Because the Ring can be topped up without setting up a separate charging dock, maintaining continuity is easier than the battery figure alone suggests.
Still, a dead Ring creates gaps in sleep and activity history. Charge it before the battery becomes critical, particularly before a night when uninterrupted sleep data matters.
Is $399.99 good value?
In isolation, yes, the Galaxy Ring is expensive for what it does. It costs $399.99 in Samsung’s US purchase flow despite having no screen, notifications, GPS interface or broad workout support.
The value calculation changes when subscription costs are included. The Galaxy Ring has the advantage of no recurring Ring software fee reported in the cited review. Oura may offer more mature software and broader activity recognition, but its full experience has historically involved a membership. Current Oura hardware and membership prices should be checked separately rather than carried over from the 2024 comparison.
A smartwatch can also cost less during promotions and offers substantially more functionality. Its disadvantage is physical: it is larger and may be less comfortable for overnight wear. The Ring is therefore not good value as a replacement for a smartwatch, but it can be defensible as a comfortable, subscription-free sleep tracker for someone already invested in Samsung’s ecosystem.

Other smart rings such as Ultrahuman Ring AIR and RingConn are worth investigating for readers prioritizing subscription-free positioning or battery life. Their current model pricing, app maturity, compatibility, warranty and return terms should be compared directly before choosing; the available evidence here does not establish either as a definitive winner.
Who should buy the Galaxy Ring?
- You own a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone.
- You want comfortable, passive sleep and wellness tracking.
- You mainly care about sleep, steps, walks, runs and general trends.
- You already use Samsung Health or a Galaxy Watch.
- You prefer a higher upfront cost to a recurring smart-ring membership.
- You understand that the Ring is a companion device, not a complete fitness wearable.
Who should skip it?
- You use an iPhone.
- You need live workout statistics, GPS or on-device controls.
- You want broad automatic activity recognition.
- You expect notifications, alarms or haptic reminders from the wearable.
- You need medical-grade measurements.
- You dislike rings, experience frequent finger swelling or cannot sleep comfortably with jewelry.
- You want the richest and most mature smart-ring insight platform.
Final verdict
The Samsung Galaxy Ring is “basic” by smartwatch standards, but that is partly the point. It is a comfortable, lightweight device for passive sleep, activity and wellness tracking, and it pairs naturally with Samsung Health and Galaxy phones.
It is also “pricey”: Samsung US listed it at $399.99 on August 18, 2026, and its workout coverage is much narrower than a smartwatch’s. Buy it if you are a Samsung owner who values overnight comfort and wants to avoid a recurring Ring subscription. Skip it if you are an iPhone user, a serious athlete or someone expecting a standalone wearable. For everyone else, the Galaxy Ring is appealing hardware attached to software and compatibility limits that deserve as much attention as its sensors.
