Yes, Samsung made this real. The feature first appeared as a possible 2025 upgrade, but Samsung now documents it as Universal Gestures, accessed through Pointer mode in SmartThings on a compatible Galaxy Watch. It lets you move a Samsung TV’s on-screen cursor with your wrist, select items by pinching, go back with a fist clench, return Home with two clenches, and scroll using the watch bezel.
It is clever and potentially valuable for accessibility—but it is not a universal remote. Compatibility depends on the exact TV, Galaxy Watch, Wear OS version, SmartThings setup, app and region.

What Galaxy Watch Pointer mode can do
Pointer mode turns a compatible Galaxy Watch into a motion-sensitive pointer for selected Samsung Smart TVs and monitors. The watch does not control every television or every connected device; it provides an additional way to navigate supported Samsung interfaces.

The watch must remain in Pointer mode for the cursor to work. If its screen turns off or you leave Pointer mode, Samsung says the cursor disappears.

Compatible Samsung TVs, monitors and Galaxy Watches
Samsung’s current support instructions list the following hardware:
TVs
- 2025 Samsung Smart TVs: U8000F or above.
- Some 2023 and 2024 Samsung TVs: U7000 or above, after receiving the relevant 2025 TV OS update.
Smart Monitors
- 2025 M90SF
- 2025 M80F
- 2025 M70F
- 2025 M50F
Galaxy Watches
Samsung lists the Galaxy Watch4 or later, running Wear OS 5 or newer. Galaxy Fit models are not included.
These are model-family requirements, not a guarantee that every regional variant will work. Samsung notes that menus and screenshots can vary by model and software version. Check the exact model number, software and regional support rather than assuming compatibility from a TV’s screen size, QLED branding or SmartThings support alone. What you need before pairing
Pointer mode relies on Samsung’s ecosystem connections, not just the watch’s motion sensors. You need:

- A compatible Samsung TV or monitor.
- A Galaxy Watch4 or later running Wear OS 5 or newer.
- The SmartThings app installed and updated on both the connected phone and watch.
- The TV registered in SmartThings.
- The watch, phone and TV associated with the same Samsung account.
- Membership in the TV’s SmartThings location group.
- The watch and phone near the TV or monitor.
- The TV visible in SmartThings’ Devices tab.
If the television is not registered to the correct SmartThings account and location, the watch may not offer Pointer mode even when the hardware appears compatible.
How to pair a Galaxy Watch with a Samsung TV
- Open SmartThings on the Galaxy Watch.
- Select the TV from the device list.
- Swipe through the watch controls until Pointer mode appears.
- When the pairing prompt appears on the TV or watch, select Pair.
- Move your wrist and confirm that a cursor appears on the TV.
Samsung’s labels may differ slightly by region, device or software version. If Pointer mode is missing, use the troubleshooting steps below before assuming the watch is unsupported.

Pointer mode is not the same as ordinary Galaxy Watch gestures
Samsung has also used the name Universal Gestures for an accessibility feature that controls the Galaxy Watch itself. That feature was originally designed to help users interact with the watch without relying on conventional touch controls. TV Pointer mode uses related gesture concepts, but enabling the watch’s normal accessibility gestures does not automatically pair it with a television.
There is also a practical distinction between Pointer mode and the standard SmartThings remote controls. SmartThings can provide conventional functions such as power, volume, channel and directional controls. Pointer mode instead gives you cursor navigation and gesture-based commands.
What it can—and cannot—replace
Pointer mode can be useful when the physical remote is missing, out of reach or difficult to operate. It may also help viewers who find small remote buttons challenging, or anyone who wants to navigate menus while cooking, exercising or otherwise occupied.
However, it should be treated as a secondary input method, not a complete home-theater replacement. Samsung’s support information and TV manuals warn that Pointer mode may not work in some third-party apps or with some external devices. Do not assume it will control a cable box, game console, HDMI device or every streaming app.

A conventional remote is likely to remain faster for volume, channels, playback and precise repeated commands. The phone-based SmartThings remote may also be more practical when you want standard controls without raising your wrist.

Pointer mode does not appear
- Confirm that the watch is a Galaxy Watch4 or later.
- Check that it runs Wear OS 5 or newer.
- Verify the TV’s exact model and software version.
- Update SmartThings on both the phone and watch.
- Make sure the TV appears under SmartThings’ Devices tab.
- Check that the TV, phone and watch use the same Samsung account.
- Confirm that you are a member of the TV’s SmartThings location group.
- Keep the phone and watch near the TV, then check for pending software updates.
The cursor disappears
Keep the watch screen awake and remain in Pointer mode. Samsung says the cursor disappears when the watch screen turns off or when you switch to another mode.
Gestures are inaccurate
Wear the watch securely so it does not move around on your wrist. Use deliberate, clearly separated gestures rather than rapid repeated movements. Also check whether the watch’s Button and Gesture feature is enabled; Samsung advises turning it off if it interferes with TV Pointer mode.

This may be an app or device compatibility limitation rather than a pairing failure. Samsung says some third-party apps do not support Universal Gestures, while its TV manuals also identify limitations involving certain apps and external devices. Try the TV’s built-in menus or another supported app to determine whether the connection itself works.

Should you buy a Galaxy Watch or TV for this feature?
Existing Samsung owners: It is worth trying if you already have a compatible Watch4-or-newer model and a supported TV. There is no separate accessory or subscription identified in Samsung’s setup instructions.
Watch buyers: Do not buy a Galaxy Watch solely for TV gestures. The feature is narrow, requires a compatible television and does not replace every remote function.
TV buyers: Treat Pointer mode as an ecosystem bonus, not the main reason to replace a working television. Compare the TV on its normal picture, software, connectivity and accessibility merits first.

Accessibility-focused users: Pointer mode may be more meaningful than it is for a typical remote user, particularly when small buttons or conventional touch interaction are difficult. Still, check the exact TV and app support before relying on it as your primary control method.
Why the original “may become” headline is outdated
In January 2025, reports based on an APK teardown and a CES demonstration described Pointer mode as a possible upcoming Galaxy Watch feature. That was appropriate framing at the time. Samsung later published official support instructions in July 2025, confirming that the capability had become a released product feature.
The accurate 2026 takeaway is more specific: Samsung Galaxy Watch gestures can control selected Samsung TVs and monitors, but only within a tightly defined hardware, software and SmartThings setup.
