The key difference is whether your Galaxy Watch can connect to a mobile network when your phone isn’t nearby. A Bluetooth model relies on its paired phone over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for calls and texts; an LTE model can make and receive calls and messages away from the phone when LTE service is activated and working. Choose LTE if you regularly leave your phone behind and want wrist-based communication. Choose Bluetooth if your phone is usually with you and you want to avoid setting up a separate watch plan.
What LTE and Bluetooth mean on a Samsung Galaxy Watch
Both versions pair with a compatible phone during setup. The distinction is how the watch stays connected when that phone is out of Bluetooth range. Samsung says calls and texts require a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection to the phone unless the watch is an LTE model with active mobile service. Samsung’s Wear OS support guidance and LTE activation guidance describe this connection difference.
| What matters | Bluetooth model | LTE model |
|---|---|---|
| Calls and texts away from the phone | Needs a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection to the paired phone for the functions Samsung describes. | Can call and message without the phone nearby when mobile service is active; available functions can depend on model, carrier, plan, and region. |
| Carrier service | No LTE watch plan is needed for the Bluetooth connection. | Requires service activation and a qualifying carrier plan. Carrier terms and eligibility vary. |
| Setup | Pair with a compatible phone. | Pair and set up the watch, then activate a qualifying mobile service plan. Exact requirements vary. |
| Best fit | Your phone is usually with you, or Wi-Fi connectivity meets your needs. | You often leave your phone behind and want to stay reachable from your wrist. |
| Cost to compare | Watch purchase price. | Watch purchase price plus the carrier’s service cost. Local plan prices are not established here. |
LTE does not make the watch a complete phone replacement, and it does not provide mobile service automatically. Samsung’s support article, “Activate LTE service for your Samsung Galaxy Watch,” says LTE models can receive calls and messages without being tethered to a smartphone; that capability depends on having active service. Apps and other features may still have phone, network, model, or regional requirements.
Which version should you choose?
Choose Bluetooth if your phone is normally nearby
A Bluetooth watch is the straightforward choice when you carry your phone on walks, errands, or commutes and mainly want watch access to phone-connected calls and texts. It also avoids the separate carrier activation and qualifying-plan requirement that comes with LTE. If you can connect the watch to Wi-Fi when needed, that may also serve your needs for the functions Samsung describes.

Choose LTE if you regularly leave your phone behind
LTE is useful when you want to make or receive calls and messages while away from your phone, provided your watch has an active, compatible plan and network coverage. Before buying, check whether your carrier supports the exact watch model and what its plan requires. Number-sharing behavior, eligibility, and service costs depend on the carrier and market; no single monthly price applies across regions.
Watch8 example: model options, dated US MSRPs, and battery claims
Samsung’s UK Watch8 product page offers LTE and Bluetooth variants. The following prices are from Samsung Electronics America’s MSRP list effective December 2025, not live street-price guarantees; Samsung says prices may change. They are US list prices, and model numbers or availability can differ by market.

| Galaxy Watch8 configuration | US model number | Samsung US MSRP, list effective December 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| 40 mm Bluetooth, graphite | SM-L320NDAAXAA | $349.99 |
| 40 mm LTE, graphite | SM-L325UDAAXAA | $399.99 |
| 44 mm Bluetooth, graphite | SM-L330NDAAXAA | $379.99 |
| 44 mm LTE, graphite | SM-L335UDAAXAA | $429.99 |
These figures show a $50 difference between the listed Bluetooth and LTE MSRP at each size in that dated US list. To decide what you will actually spend, compare current watch prices and add your carrier’s service cost if you choose LTE.
Samsung lists a 325 mAh battery for the Watch8 40 mm and 435 mAh for the 44 mm, and claims up to 30 hours in AOD mode. These are Samsung specifications and a manufacturer battery-life claim, not independent test results. The cited product information does not establish a universal battery-life difference between the LTE and Bluetooth variants, so the size-specific figures should not be treated as proof that one connection type lasts longer.

Activation and compatibility: check before buying LTE
Activation instructions are market-specific. In its US guidance, Samsung directs users to pair the watch and phone, then open Galaxy Wearable and go to Watch settings or Home > Mobile plans to follow the prompts. The article says the phone needs a SIM inserted and the activation needs an eligible network. It names AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon in the US context. For AT&T or Verizon, Samsung says a carrier QR code is required; a new QR code is needed after a watch or mobile-network reset. These steps should not be assumed to apply outside the US. See Samsung’s US LTE activation instructions and confirm local requirements with your carrier.
Compatibility depends on the watch, phone, and market. Samsung’s UK Watch8 listing specifies Android 12 or higher. Samsung’s US Wear OS support guidance says setup requires an Android phone with Google Mobile Services and notes that model-specific requirements may apply. Check the exact model listing and your local Samsung and carrier guidance before purchase. The older Watch6 specification sheet describes initial pairing with an eligible Android phone and a separate qualifying plan for standalone LTE calling and messaging; those Watch6-specific details should not be assumed to define every newer generation.
