Verdict: The original Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra remains a compelling premium Wear OS watch for Samsung Galaxy owners who want a large, bright screen, LTE, rugged construction and a bigger battery than Samsung’s standard watch line. But it is no longer an automatic pick for “the best” Wear OS smartwatch: Samsung announced the newer Galaxy Watch Ultra2 on July 22, 2026. Consider the original when it costs meaningfully less than Ultra2 and its size and Samsung-focused features suit you.
2026 update: This review covers the original 2024 Galaxy Watch Ultra—not the Ultra2. Samsung’s [announcement of the Ultra2 and Watch9](https://news.samsung.com/us/samsung-galaxy-watch-ultra2-watch9-health-companion/) confirms the newer generation and its Snapdragon Wear Elite platform; the information available here is not enough to establish how it compares in independent real-world testing.
Which Galaxy Watch Ultra is this?
This is the original Galaxy Watch Ultra, launched in 2024. Its core hardware includes an Exynos W1000 processor, Wear OS 5, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 590mAh battery and dual-frequency GPS. Samsung’s [product page](https://www.samsung.com/us/watches/galaxy-watch-ultra/) covers the original model; Samsung’s [2026 interim report](https://images.samsung.com/is/content/samsung/assets/global/ir/docs/2026_1Q_Interim_Report.pdf) lists its hardware and dimensions. Refreshed colors or later retail stock do not make it the 2026 Ultra2.
Price and value in 2026
Samsung’s U.S. June 2026 MSRP file lists the LTE Galaxy Watch Ultra at $649.99. That is an MSRP reference, not a verified current selling price: discounts, trade-ins, inventory and carrier offers can change the amount buyers actually pay. Check the retailer’s current price and compare it with Ultra2 before purchasing; if the price gap is small, the newer model deserves a close look.

The original Ultra’s value is strongest when a substantial discount makes its display, LTE and rugged build attractive without charging nearly-new-model money. The available price information does not establish a live discount or Ultra2 price. Samsung’s [U.S. MSRP file](https://images.samsung.com/is/content/samsung/assets/us/business/solutions/industries/government/msrp-price-sheets/SamsungWearablesMSRPPriceFileJune2026.pdf) is the source for the $649.99 figure.
Design, size and comfort
The Ultra puts a circular display inside a distinctive cushion-shaped titanium case, with three physical buttons including a programmable Quick Button. At approximately 47.4 × 47.1 × 12.1mm and 60.5g without the strap, it is a large watch. Its scale helps with screen readability and gives space for a larger battery, but can feel conspicuous, press against the wrist during sleep, catch on sleeves or be uncomfortable on smaller wrists. Comfort depends on wrist shape and band fit; try it on if possible, particularly if you plan to sleep in it.
The strap is replaceable, so owners can choose a band better suited to exercise, swimming or daily wear. Check that a replacement is compatible with the Ultra’s attachment system and intended activity rather than assuming any watch band will fit.
Display and controls
The 1.5-inch-class Super AMOLED display has a 480 × 480 resolution, always-on support and a peak-brightness claim of up to 3,000 nits, according to Samsung’s [specifications](https://www.samsung.com/us/watches/galaxy-watch-ultra/). It is a large, legible surface for notifications, workout data and circular watch faces, and Samsung advertises it for outdoor visibility. A peak-nit figure is not a measurement of sustained brightness in every condition, so it should not be read as a guarantee of identical visibility in prolonged direct sun.

That can reduce the steps between deciding to exercise and recording it. The Ultra does not have a physical rotating bezel; shoppers who prefer that control style should consider the Galaxy Watch8 Classic instead.

Wear OS, apps and Samsung software
The original Ultra runs Wear OS 5 with Samsung’s One UI Watch interface. Google Play apps and services such as Maps, Wallet, notifications, music, calls and voice assistance make it more versatile than a watch limited to a single fitness platform. App and service behavior still depends on the relevant account, phone setup and connectivity.
Samsung Health and Galaxy Wearable handle much of the watch’s setup and health-data experience. Google apps are available, but the overall interface and some features are Samsung-centered. Before buying for a particular function, verify that it appears on the watch and in the phone apps you plan to use. Samsung’s [setup guidance](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10003348/) explains the Wear OS and Google Mobile Services requirements.
Compatibility: check your phone before buying
Buyer warning: “Works with Android” does not mean every feature works on every Android phone. Samsung says the Ultra requires Android 11 or later and is not compatible with iPhone. A compatible Android phone must also support Google Mobile Services for Wear OS setup.

Samsung Galaxy phones provide the fullest feature set. Samsung says some capabilities—including certain AI functions, ECG, sleep-apnea features and synchronization—may be unavailable or limited on non-Samsung Android phones. If you depend on one of these, confirm support for your exact phone, region and software before paying. See Samsung’s [compatibility guidance](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10004668/) and its [feature-specific support information](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00082502/).
Battery life: useful endurance, with important conditions
The 590mAh battery is one of the original Ultra’s advantages over standard Galaxy Watch models, but Samsung’s longest figure is not normal all-features use. Samsung lists up to 60 hours with always-on display enabled and up to 100 hours in Power Saving Mode. The 2026 interim report also cites up to 48 hours in exercise power-saving mode. These are manufacturer claims under specified modes, not a guarantee that every owner will get that runtime.

| Use case | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Mixed smartwatch use | Notifications, health tracking and occasional workouts are more representative of everyday use than the restricted 100-hour mode. Actual runtime varies with settings and use. |
| Always-on display | Samsung’s stated figure is up to 60 hours with the display always on; it is a claim, not a universal measured result. |
| GPS workouts | Outdoor tracking adds demand. Samsung’s 48-hour exercise power-saving figure applies to that reduced-feature mode, not unrestricted continuous GPS use. |
| LTE | Cellular calls and connected use can consume more power than relying on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. |
| Power Saving Mode | The up-to-100-hour claim belongs to this restricted mode, so it should not be compared directly with ordinary full-featured use. |
For many buyers, planning to charge about every couple of days is more sensible than expecting four days of ordinary use; GPS sessions, LTE, display settings and health monitoring can shift that interval. Samsung’s [product specifications](https://www.samsung.com/us/watches/galaxy-watch-ultra/) and [interim report](https://images.samsung.com/is/content/samsung/assets/global/ir/docs/2026_1Q_Interim_Report.pdf) state the battery figures and conditions. The available specifications do not establish a single charging time for every charger and setup.
Fitness tracking and GPS
Dual-frequency GPS is a notable hardware feature for outdoor workouts, alongside modes for activities such as running, walking, cycling, swimming and hiking. The Quick Button is handy when you want to start a workout promptly. Route tracking and workout data make the watch useful for general fitness and for people who want an app-capable smartwatch on runs or rides.
Dual-frequency support alone does not prove that the Ultra will track a route more accurately than a Garmin or Apple Watch in a city canyon, forest or mountain environment. No controlled comparative results are established here. Likewise, the watch can record useful heart-rate and activity trends, but that is not the same as a demonstrated advantage during intervals or a complete structured endurance-training platform. Serious runners and cyclists should compare Samsung Health’s training analysis with the coaching, recovery and workout tools they actually need. For endurance-focused use, Garmin is a relevant alternative; for casual exercise alongside calls, apps and notifications, the Ultra offers a broader smartwatch mix.
Health features: useful signals, not a diagnosis
Samsung lists heart-rate monitoring, blood oxygen, sleep tracking, body composition via bioelectrical impedance analysis, exercise heart-rate zones, cycle tracking, Energy Score, AGEs Index, fall detection and SOS, as well as ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications and sleep-apnea detection. These features do not all have the same purpose or availability: some collect measurements or trends, some interpret wellness data, and some are regulated or depend on a particular phone and market.
- ECG and irregular-rhythm notifications: These are not a clinical diagnosis and may require a Samsung Galaxy phone or regional approval.
- Blood pressure: Availability can vary by region and may require calibration; verify local support and instructions.
- Sleep-apnea detection: It is not a substitute for a medical evaluation.
- Body composition, sleep scores and wellness metrics: Treat them as estimates and trends rather than definitive medical measurements.
- Fall detection and SOS: Availability and operation can depend on setup, location and connectivity.
Samsung’s [feature page](https://www.samsung.com/us/watches/galaxy-watch-ultra/) describes the listed functions. Phone brand, country, regulatory status, Samsung Health version, account and watch software can affect what is available, so check the exact feature you need before buying.

Durability and outdoor use
Samsung specifies a titanium body, 10 ATM water resistance, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H testing. Those ratings support the case for a more rugged smartwatch, but they do not make it indestructible or eliminate damage risk. Water resistance is not the same as waterproofing: impact, wear, repairs and aging can affect seals. Salt water, hot tubs and rapid temperature changes also deserve caution. Do not treat the ratings as confirmation that the watch is suitable for scuba diving or as a replacement for a dive computer.
LTE: when leaving the phone behind makes sense
The LTE model can support calls, messages, emergency communication and selected connected features when the phone is not nearby. It requires a compatible carrier plan, commonly with an additional wearable line or fee, and LTE use can shorten battery life. Some services still need phone setup, an account or a network connection; “phone-free” does not mean every phone function works independently. Check carrier eligibility, coverage, plan cost and emergency-service limitations before choosing LTE.
How it compares with the alternatives
| Alternative | Consider it if… | What the original Ultra offers instead |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch Ultra2 | You want Samsung’s newest Ultra generation and its newer Snapdragon Wear Elite platform. | The 2024 Ultra may be a better value if discounted substantially. The announcement alone does not establish real-world performance superiority for every use. |
| Galaxy Watch8 or Watch8 Classic | You want a newer Samsung watch in a less overtly rugged or more traditional style; Classic is relevant if you prefer a rotating-bezel-style interaction. | The Ultra has a 590mAh battery and 10 ATM rating; do not assume the smaller alternatives match those specifications. |
| Google Pixel Watch | You prefer Google’s software and Pixel-phone integration. Pixel Watch 5 is a 2026 competitor, but a detailed current price and feature comparison is not established here. | The Ultra is the more Samsung-oriented choice, particularly for Galaxy-phone owners and Samsung Health features. |
| Garmin | You prioritize longer battery life and deeper endurance-training analytics. | The Ultra offers Wear OS apps, Google services, calls and richer general smartwatch integration. |
| Apple Watch Ultra | You use an iPhone or are deliberately moving to Apple’s ecosystem. | The Galaxy Watch Ultra is incompatible with iPhone, so this is an ecosystem choice rather than a drop-in Android alternative. |
Samsung’s [Ultra2 announcement](https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-galaxy-watch-ultra2-and-watch9-your-health-companion) establishes the new model’s arrival; it does not by itself settle which watch is better in day-to-day use. For broader Android-watch context, see [TechRadar’s Android smartwatch guide](https://www.techradar.com/news/best-android-smartwatch), [Android Central’s Samsung watch guide](https://www.androidcentral.com/best-samsung-smartwatch) and its [battery-life roundup](https://www.androidcentral.com/wearables/best-smartwatches-for-battery-life).
Who should buy the original Galaxy Watch Ultra?
- Samsung Galaxy owners who want a premium Wear OS watch with Google apps and Samsung Health.
- Buyers who value a large, bright display, LTE and a rugged titanium design more than a slim profile.
- People who want better battery capacity than the standard Galaxy Watch line and are comfortable charging regularly.
- Shoppers who find the 2024 model substantially cheaper than Ultra2 and do not need the newest platform.
Who should choose something else?
- iPhone owners: The Ultra does not work with iPhone; choose an Apple Watch for Apple’s ecosystem.
- Small-wrist buyers or sleep trackers who dislike bulk: Its 47mm, 60.5g case may be cumbersome.
- Endurance athletes: Compare Garmin if long battery life and dedicated training analytics are priorities.
- Non-Samsung Android owners: Verify access to any Samsung-specific ECG, sleep-apnea, AI or synchronization feature you require.
- Newest-hardware shoppers: Compare Ultra2 directly, especially if its price is close to the original.
- Rotating-bezel fans: Look at the Galaxy Watch8 Classic or another Classic model.
Final verdict
The original Galaxy Watch Ultra is still a capable, distinctive Wear OS watch—especially for Samsung phone owners who want LTE, a large screen and rugged construction. Its size, ecosystem limitations and battery claims under reduced-feature modes make it a specific choice rather than a universal best. In 2026, buy it for a meaningful discount and a clear fit with your needs; otherwise compare Ultra2 and the alternatives by ecosystem, comfort and training priorities.
