Samsung’s Galaxy Watch4 appeared in U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification records in June 2021. The filing was an important wireless-compliance and launch-readiness signal, with clues about model numbers, connectivity, battery and charging—but it was not FDA medical approval or a complete specification sheet. Samsung later announced the Galaxy Watch4 series on August 11, 2021, and began U.S. retail availability on August 27.
What approval did the Galaxy Watch4 receive?
The approval behind the headline was FCC certification: a regulatory step concerning a device’s radio and wireless communications operation in the United States. A smartwatch with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC or LTE needs applicable authorization before it can be marketed in the U.S. The June 2021 filing therefore suggested that Samsung was preparing the watch for sale, but it did not establish a retail date or confirm every planned feature. Contemporary reporting on the FCC records described the devices and details visible in the filings.
This was not FDA clearance for ECG, blood-pressure monitoring or another health function. FCC certification addresses wireless compliance, not the medical accuracy or regulatory status of health features.
Which models appeared in the FCC records?
The initial filing included model numbers SM-R880 and SM-R885, reported at the time as the smaller Bluetooth/Wi-Fi version and its LTE counterpart. Further model numbers associated by contemporary reporting with the Galaxy Watch4 family and the then-rumored Galaxy Watch Active4 included SM-R860, SM-R865, SM-R870, SM-R875, SM-R890 and SM-R895. These were informed identifications based on filings, not Samsung-confirmed retail names. Samsung later announced the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic; the FCC listing alone did not settle which retail product every model number represented.

What did the filing reveal about connectivity and hardware?
Reporting on the certification documents identified Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC, with cellular support on LTE models. The reported LTE bands appeared compatible with major U.S. carriers including Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, but band overlap alone does not guarantee activation or service: carrier support, plan requirements and regional model compatibility still matter.
The records also pointed to a battery identified as EB-BR880ABY, reported at approximately 240mAh for one model, and Samsung charging accessory EP-OR825. Those are early filing-era clues, not specifications for every size and connectivity configuration. Samsung’s later U.S. datasheet listed 247mAh for the 40mm Wi-Fi model and 361mAh for the 44mm Wi-Fi model. The early approximate figure should not be generalized across the range. Samsung’s U.S. Wi-Fi datasheet provides the later official configuration details.

What the FCC approval did not confirm
A certification record is not a final product announcement. It did not establish the display, processor, memory, storage, water resistance, software version, battery-life claims, pricing, final retail availability or compatibility restrictions. Nor did it prove the final product names, or confirm the availability, accuracy or regulatory status of health features. Those details required Samsung’s later product information or market-specific health approvals.
What Samsung later announced
On August 11, 2021, Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic. The series introduced Wear OS Powered by Samsung with Samsung’s One UI Watch interface. Samsung offered the Watch4 in 40mm and 44mm sizes, with Bluetooth and LTE configurations; the Classic added a physical rotating bezel and stainless-steel construction. Samsung’s announcement also described a three-in-one health sensor for optical heart rate, electrical heart signals and bioelectrical impedance analysis.

For the 40mm and 44mm Wi-Fi models, Samsung’s U.S. datasheet listed 1.5GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo. It specified a 1.2-inch, 396 × 396 display and 247mAh battery for the 40mm model, and a 1.4-inch, 450 × 450 display and 361mAh battery for the 44mm model. These are later official specifications, not facts established by the FCC filing.
Samsung stated that U.S. retail availability began August 27, 2021. At launch, U.S. Galaxy Watch4 Bluetooth models started at $249.99 and LTE models at $299.99; these are historical launch prices, not current offers. Samsung’s September 2021 U.S. price sheet listed the 40mm Bluetooth at $249.99, 44mm Bluetooth at $279.99, 40mm LTE at $299.99 and 44mm LTE at $329.99. Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement gives the launch availability and starting prices, while its September 2021 MSRP sheet lists those configuration prices.

What the filing meant for prospective U.S. buyers
Bluetooth or LTE
The FCC records indicated that cellular versions were in the pipeline, but they did not guarantee service on any particular carrier. LTE can let a watch stay connected when it is away from its paired phone, subject to carrier compatibility, activation and any required wearable plan. Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models avoid cellular service fees but rely more on a nearby phone for connected functions.
Health features and phone compatibility
The later product announcement described body-composition measurement, blood-oxygen readings, ECG-related functions and blood-pressure monitoring. Availability and requirements vary by feature and market; software, location, supported phone and regulatory status can affect access. Samsung noted that some health functions may require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone and Samsung Health Monitor. Before relying on a particular feature, check its country availability, phone and Android requirements, app access, and any calibration or periodic cuff-measurement requirements for blood-pressure readings. The FCC approval itself verified none of these health conditions.

Regional scope
The FCC filing concerned U.S. wireless authorization, not approval for every country. Model numbers, carrier bands, feature availability and prices can differ by market. For example, Samsung’s Canadian launch announcement used Canadian regional pricing rather than the U.S. figures. Samsung’s Canadian announcement is the relevant reference for that market.
