Design, dimensions and display
The “40mm” name describes Samsung’s size category; the actual case measures approximately 42.7 × 40.4 × 8.6mm. It weighs 30g without the band. The case uses Armor Aluminum, Samsung’s cushion-style design and a Dynamic Lug System.
The 40mm version has a 34.0mm, approximately 1.34-inch, circular Super AMOLED display. Sapphire crystal provides improved scratch resistance over ordinary watch glass, but it is not unbreakable.
Samsung advertises brightness of up to 3,000 nits. That is a maximum specification rather than a promise that the panel will remain at that level in every mode or situation. It should help with outdoor visibility, but reflections, direct sun, watch settings and automatic brightness behavior still matter.

Performance, storage and software
The Watch8 uses Samsung’s five-core 3nm wearable processor class, with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The processor name should not be confused with a separately verified chip-brand designation; Samsung’s official product material identifies the processor by its manufacturing process and core count.
The 32GB figure is total internal storage. Operating-system files, preinstalled apps and reserved system space reduce the amount available for downloaded apps, music and other content.
The watch runs Wear OS powered by Samsung. Software features and labels can change through updates, and individual functions may require Samsung Health, Samsung Health Monitor, a Samsung account, Google services or a particular phone configuration.
Battery life and charging
The 40mm Watch8 has a 325mAh battery. Samsung rates it for up to 30 hours with Always-On Display enabled. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee of 30 hours in every usage pattern.

Battery life can be materially shorter with LTE away from the phone, continuous GPS, frequent screen activation, sleep tracking, continuous heart-rate or stress monitoring, blood-oxygen or temperature measurements, music playback, calls, frequent notifications or weak cellular coverage.
The watch charges wirelessly using the included Wireless Charger. Do not assume that every generic Qi charger will provide full or reliable compatibility.
Health and fitness features
The Watch8 includes an optical heart-rate sensor, electrical heart sensor for ECG, bioelectrical impedance analysis, blood-oxygen sensing, temperature sensing, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer/altimeter, geomagnetic sensor and ambient-light sensor.
Supported Samsung Health functions include:
- ECG recording and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications
- Blood-pressure readings when supported and calibrated
- Blood-oxygen and heart-rate monitoring
- Body composition estimates using BIA
- Sleep tracking, sleep coaching and sleep-apnea risk detection
- Cycle tracking and temperature-based insights
- Energy Score and other wellness trends
- Workout detection, running tools and personalized heart-rate zones
- Antioxidant Index and related Samsung Health features
These are monitoring, screening and wellness tools—not substitutes for clinical diagnosis. The watch does not diagnose sleep apnea or heart disease, and its blood-pressure function is not a replacement for a validated cuff. Follow Samsung’s setup, calibration and medical-use warnings.

Availability varies by country, phone, software, Samsung account, app version and regulatory approval. Samsung’s health-feature availability document, updated July 13, 2026, lists different supported countries for ECG, blood pressure, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications and sleep-apnea features.
GPS and workout tracking
The Watch8 supports dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS and additional satellite-positioning systems listed by Samsung. Dual-frequency positioning is designed to improve tracking in difficult environments such as dense cities and areas with signal reflections; it cannot guarantee perfect route accuracy.
Buildings, trees, weather, satellite geometry and the difference between watch-recorded and phone-assisted positioning can affect a route. LTE and GPS are separate capabilities: an LTE model does not automatically make GPS more accurate.

| Model | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth/Wi-Fi | Users who usually carry a phone and want the lower price | Not intended for dependable phone-free cellular calls, messages or streaming |
| LTE | Runners, travelers and users who want calls, messages and data without the phone nearby | Requires carrier support, activation and a compatible paid plan; cellular use can reduce battery life |
LTE activation can fail when the carrier does not support the watch, number sharing is incomplete, the watch and phone are incompatible regional models, or coverage is weak. Confirm carrier compatibility before buying.

Compatibility
Samsung’s U.S. information specifies compatibility with Samsung Galaxy smartphones running Android 12 or later. The watch is designed for Android pairing through Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health, but basic pairing with an Android phone does not make every health feature equivalent to the Samsung Galaxy experience.
ECG, blood pressure, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications and other Samsung Health Monitor features may require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung Health Monitor, a Samsung account, calibration and regional approval. The Galaxy Watch8 does not support normal pairing with an iPhone.
Galaxy Watch8 40mm versus 44mm
| Specification | 40mm | 44mm |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | 325mAh | 435mAh |
| Weight | 30g | 33.8g |
| Display | 34.0mm | Larger display |
| U.S. Bluetooth MSRP | $349.99 | $379.99 |
| U.S. LTE MSRP | $399.99 | $429.99 |
The 44mm model adds only 3.8g in Samsung’s listed weight while providing substantially more battery capacity and more screen area. Choose the 40mm for a smaller, lighter case and the 44mm when battery headroom, large text or long GPS/LTE sessions matter more.
Durability and water resistance
The Watch8 carries 5ATM water resistance, IP68 dust-and-water resistance and MIL-STD-810H testing. These ratings are not the same as being waterproof or indestructible. Swimming, salt water, hot tubs, detergents, impacts, aging seals and improper use can reduce protection. MIL-STD-810H describes testing against specified conditions, not a guarantee against every type of damage.

Which Galaxy Watch8 40mm should you buy?
- Buy the 40mm Bluetooth model if your phone is normally nearby, you want the lowest price and comfort matters most.
- Buy the 40mm LTE model if you regularly leave your phone behind and your carrier supports smartwatch service.
- Choose the 44mm model instead if you do long GPS workouts, expect frequent LTE use, prefer a larger display or want more battery capacity.
- Consider a discounted Watch7 40mm if price matters more than the Watch8’s newer design, 3nm processor class and higher advertised brightness.
- Consider Watch8 Classic or Watch Ultra only if you specifically want a more traditional or rugged-oriented design; neither is the compact 40mm choice.
Verdict
The Galaxy Watch8 40mm is the better Watch8 for smaller wrists, lower weight and compact comfort. It retains the family’s core display, processor, health and GPS capabilities, but its 325mAh battery leaves less headroom than the 44mm model. Buy it for its size—not because it offers the best endurance. For frequent LTE, GPS or long workout use, the 44mm version is the safer choice.
