If battery capacity is your main reason for choosing a size, the 40mm model has the more substantial generational improvement. If you want the largest absolute battery, the 44mm model remains the obvious choice because its 445 mAh cell is larger than the 40mm unit.

What happened to the 435 mAh battery leak?
Before launch, several reports pointed to a 435 mAh battery for the 44mm Galaxy Watch9. That figure matched the 44mm Galaxy Watch8 and led to a reasonable theory: Samsung might keep the same capacity while improving endurance through a more efficient 3nm Snapdragon Wear Elite processor.
Android Central reported the 435 mAh expectation, while Tom’s Guide also described a possible unchanged 44mm capacity and framed any battery-life gain as an efficiency benefit. A later 9to5Google report mentioned a slightly larger 44mm battery but did not expose the final retail capacities in the accessible article text.

Samsung’s final US specifications resolve the issue: the 44mm Watch9 is listed at 445 mAh, not 435 mAh. The 40mm model is listed at 390 mAh, up from 325 mAh in the Watch8.
So the accurate wording for a current article is:
- The 40mm battery upgrade is substantial.
- The 44mm battery upgrade is real but small.
- Earlier reports that the 44mm model would retain the Watch8’s 435 mAh battery were superseded by Samsung’s final specification.
- The capacities are confirmed; measured Watch9 runtime remains a separate question.
Will the Galaxy Watch9 last longer than the Watch8?
It may, but the battery specifications alone cannot prove how much longer it will last. Charging the Galaxy Watch9

Do not assume that every older Galaxy Watch puck, universal Qi pad, or multi-device dock will charge the Watch9 at the same speed or work optimally.
