Yes, a Samsung Gear S2 battery can be replaced, but it is not user-removable: the watch must be opened and partly disassembled. Samsung’s manual says battery removal should be handled by an authorized service center and warns of injury, device damage, and safety risks from improper removal: Samsung Gear S2 manual and support. Independent repair instructions demonstrate that replacement is technically possible, but they do not make it a manufacturer-approved user procedure.
Check whether the battery is really the problem
Short runtime, unexpected shutdowns at a seemingly high charge, operation only while charging, or an unusually fast or erratic percentage drop can point to a worn battery. A lifting case or screen may indicate swelling; stop using and charging the watch if you see this.

A charging failure can also come from a faulty wireless charging dock or adapter, dirty or damaged charging contacts, software instability, liquid corrosion, a damaged motherboard, a failed display, or a power-button problem. Before opening the watch, test it with a known-good compatible dock and adapter. If the symptoms began after liquid exposure or a failed update, a battery swap may not address the cause.
Decide between DIY, service, and replacement
The standard Gear S2 repair is rated moderate by iFixit, with an estimated 15–20 minutes for the core procedure; its 3G guide estimates about 30 minutes. Gather the correct tools and battery
The guides call for a Y#0 or Y00 tri-wing/tri-point driver for rear screws, a Phillips #00 or J00 driver where specified, a plastic opening tool or pick, a spudger, tweezers, and a compatible replacement battery. The standard guide lists a Y#0 driver, heavy-duty spudger, opening tool, Phillips #00 screwdriver, and tweezers. Check the bit against the screw before applying force: tri-wing and Phillips drivers are not interchangeable. See iFixit’s standard guide for its tool list.
Do not use a knife, razor blade, improvised metal pick, or excessive heat. A replacement listing verified here is for SM-R730 only: iFixit identifies its EB-BR730ABE cell as aftermarket, 300 mAh, 3.7 V, and 1.14 Wh. That specification is not evidence that it fits SM-R720, SM-R732, or other variants.

Prepare safely before opening the watch
- Synchronize or back up important watch data where possible, then power the watch off completely and disconnect the charger.
- Work on a clean, well-lit, static-safe surface. Photograph cable routing and screw positions as you go, and keep screws separated by step.
- Inspect the replacement cell before installation. Do not use a battery that is swollen, creased, punctured, dented, leaking, or otherwise damaged.
- If the existing battery is swollen, hot, leaking, or damaged, do not press, bend, pierce, or attempt to remove it. Stop and seek qualified repair or battery-disposal help. Do not put a lithium-ion battery in household trash; use an appropriate battery-recycling or hazardous-waste program.
Replace the standard Gear S2 or Gear S2 Classic battery
This sequence follows the documented standard Bluetooth repair layout. The internal arrangement differs on the 3G model; use the next section for an SM-R730. Follow the standard Gear S2 guide alongside these steps if you need its visual references.
- Remove both watch straps and place the watch face-down.
- Remove the four rear tri-wing screws with the correctly fitting driver.
- Work a plastic opening tool into the seam between the upper and lower case sections and release the rear housing gradually. Keep the tool shallow: the guide warns not to insert it more than 3 mm, because deeper insertion can damage the seal or internal components.
- Remove the two Phillips screws securing the motherboard.
- Use a spudger to disconnect the three flex connectors. Lift connectors carefully rather than pulling their cables.
- Lift the motherboard gently while guiding its cables through their openings; do not snag or fold them.
- Remove or lift the battery casing and turn it over as needed to access the cell. Use the flat end of a spudger to push the battery out, then lift its cable connector and remove the battery.
- Install the compatible replacement in the same orientation. Do not bend, pinch, or puncture it. Route every flex cable through its original gap and reconnect the battery and other connectors.
- Reinstall the motherboard screws, fit the rear housing, and reinstall the four rear screws. Refit both straps.
Replace the Gear S2 3G battery
The 3G layout has a different board and cable arrangement. The steps below reflect the Gear S2 3G guide; do not substitute the standard-model sequence.

- Remove the four rear screws with a Y00 tri-wing driver, then remove the J00 Phillips screw from the mainboard.
- Disconnect the five snap-in flex connectors around the board. Lift each connector rather than pulling its cable.
- Lift the mainboard carefully, watching for the vibration-motor flex cable curled around the top of the board.
- With the board clear, access the battery. Pry from the right-hand side and keep the tool shallow: the LCD is directly beneath the battery.
- Remove the cell without bending or puncturing it. Install the verified SM-R730-compatible replacement without pinching or bending it, then reconnect its battery connector.
- Use suitable adhesive only if the replacement does not already include it behind the connector or battery area. Reassemble in reverse order, checking cable routing before closing the case.
Reassemble and test every function
- Place the watch on its compatible wireless charger and confirm that the charging indicator appears. Let it charge before judging runtime.
- Boot the watch and check the display for lines or dead areas, then test touch input, rotating bezel, buttons, vibration, and heart-rate sensor.
- Check Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, plus cellular functions where applicable. A watch that starts up is not necessarily fully repaired: a partly seated connector can leave charging, vibration, sensors, or display functions disabled.
- Monitor battery behavior over several charge cycles. If the cell becomes hot or swells, stop using and charging the watch immediately.
Optional battery-gauge calibration
The iFixit replacement listing recommends charging to 100%, leaving the watch charging for at least two more hours, using it until it shuts down from low battery, and then charging uninterrupted back to 100%. This is the seller’s optional gauge-reset recommendation, not an official Samsung requirement. Repeated deep discharges are not needed for ordinary lithium-ion battery care. See the iFixit listing.
Do not assume the original water resistance remains
Opening the case can damage the seal, and the cited repair instructions and Samsung product pages do not establish that a DIY repair restores the factory water-resistance rating. Reseating the back or applying adhesive is not equivalent to factory pressure testing. Keep a repaired watch away from swimming, showering, immersion, and heavy water exposure unless a qualified service provider has resealed and tested it.

Troubleshoot problems after the repair
The back cover will not release
- Confirm all four rear screws are removed, then work gradually around the seam with a plastic opening tool.
- Do not force one corner or switch to a metal blade. If the seal remains strongly bonded, stop rather than risk cracking the cover or display.
A flex connector will not disconnect
- Use the flat end of a spudger and lift the connector straight up; do not pull on the cable or lever against board components.
- Photograph connector orientation before removal. If it resists, stop and reassess rather than increasing force.
The display is blank
- If safe to reopen, power the watch off first. Check the display and motherboard connectors for incomplete seating, cable pinching, or a tear, and inspect the battery connection.
- If the display worked before the repair, connector damage or misrouted cable is more likely than a battery fault.
The watch will not charge
- Try a known-good compatible charging dock and adapter, and verify that the battery connector is seated.
- Look for a pinched cable beneath the motherboard and check charging alignment. Persistent failure may indicate a board-level fault rather than a bad replacement cell.
Runtime remains poor
- Confirm the battery is compatible with the exact model and that its condition and stated capacity are credible. A replacement can be old, defective, or counterfeit.
- Allow setup and synchronization to settle, and check whether the watch is repeatedly searching for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cellular service. Temporarily disabling unnecessary health-monitoring and connectivity features can help identify unusual drain.
- A new cell cannot guarantee original endurance; battery quality, age, software behavior, charging hardware, and board condition all affect runtime.
The watch overheats
Stop using and charging it. When safe, disconnect it from the charger, keep it away from flammable materials, and do not press on the battery. Arrange qualified repair or disposal for a hot or swollen cell.
