Samsung appears to be developing a clip-on or open-ear Galaxy Buds model, but its name, release and audio technology remain unconfirmed. In particular, leaked images look more like open-ear earbuds that direct sound through the air than traditional bone-conduction headphones. As of August 18, 2026, “bone-conduction Galaxy Buds” is a rumor—not a confirmed product description.
What evidence points to a Galaxy Buds project?
Several reported clues point to an internal Samsung product, rather than a rumor resting on a single anonymous claim. None proves that the device will reach stores: software references and prototype imagery can describe a product that is changed, delayed or canceled.
- Software references: The name “Galaxy Buds Able” and model number SM-U600 have reportedly appeared in Samsung software. That is meaningful evidence of a device reference, but the unusual model number is not a retail listing or a launch confirmation. (9to5Google’s report on the leak)
- Firmware imagery: A reported firmware icon depicts a design unlike the conventional Galaxy Buds4 and Buds4 Pro, adding support for the idea that Samsung has explored a different form factor.
- Leaked images: Later images reportedly show an ear-wrapping or clip-on structure, with a module near the ear canal and a charging case. The images suggest a design direction, not guaranteed final hardware. (SamMobile’s coverage of the images)
Does the product use bone conduction?
That is the key uncertainty. Bone conduction and open-ear air conduction both leave the ear canal open, but they deliver sound differently. Bone-conduction headphones vibrate against contact points on the head or ear area, transmitting sound through bone. Open-ear air-conduction earbuds use conventional speaker drivers positioned outside the canal to direct sound toward the ear. An open ear, by itself, does not mean bone conduction.
The leaked Samsung design appears to place a speaker-like module near the ear canal, leading some coverage to describe it as open-ear air conduction rather than a traditional bone-conduction headset. Images cannot establish the transducer technology, so that interpretation remains tentative. (Android Authority’s report)

Why the patent fuels speculation—but does not settle it
Samsung patent application EP4546821A1 describes a modular speaker with air-conduction and bone-conduction components. Its priority date is October 24, 2022, and it was published on April 30, 2025. That establishes Samsung’s exploration of hybrid speaker technology; it does not tie the invention to SM-U600 or prove that a commercial Galaxy Buds product will use it.
A future device could use both methods, use air conduction alone, or have no connection to this patent. Until Samsung confirms the hardware—or a reliable teardown establishes it—the bone-conduction claim should stay qualified.

What might it be called, and what does the design look like?
“Galaxy Buds Able” is the earlier and more persistent reported name; “Galaxy Buds On” has also appeared in coverage as a possible brand. Samsung has confirmed neither. “Able” could be an internal label or a final name, and there is no verified explanation of the term. Reports associating the product with Buds On do not establish that it replaces Able. (SamMobile on the Buds On name; Android Central on the naming report)
Reported imagery shows a section that sits near the ear canal and another that hooks or wraps behind the ear, plus a charging case with a front-facing status light. Such a clip-on arrangement could help keep an earbud in place during movement without sealing the canal. The images do not establish final fit, materials, controls or specifications.

When could it launch, and what has Samsung confirmed?
Samsung has announced no release date, price or availability for the rumored model. A possible later-2026 launch, including speculation about a release near the Galaxy S26 FE, remains unverified. The product reportedly did not appear at Samsung’s Unpacked event on July 22, 2026; missing that event does not establish cancellation. (Gadgets 360’s report on the event and timing)
Samsung did officially announce the Galaxy Buds4 and Galaxy Buds4 Pro in February 2026. Its announcement and 2026 interim report identify the disclosed Buds4 line, not Able, On or SM-U600. Those public materials do not confirm the rumored product, but their silence is not evidence that it has been canceled. Samsung has not published specifications for the rumored model, including its battery rating, water-resistance rating, codec support, noise-cancellation features or compatibility.

Who might benefit from a clip-on or open-ear design?
If Samsung releases a product in this category, its likely appeal would be people who want audio while keeping their ear canals unsealed: runners and cyclists who value awareness of their surroundings, office workers who need to hear colleagues, and listeners who dislike the pressure or fit of sealed earbuds. A clip may also offer more stability than a loose open-fit bud during exercise. These are category-level possibilities, not confirmed Samsung claims or a guarantee of safety outdoors.

- Sound and bass: Open designs give up isolation, and bass may feel less forceful than with sealed earbuds. Bone-conduction models have their own distinctive sound and contact requirements.
- Leakage and privacy: Air-conduction audio can be audible to people nearby, especially in quiet rooms. Bone-conduction headphones can also leak sound.
- Fit and comfort: A clip may stay put better during movement, but pressure around the ear or interference with glasses could matter. A bone-conduction design likewise needs stable contact.
- Noise and calls: An intentionally open ear makes noise isolation—and the value of active noise cancellation—limited. Microphones may also be more exposed to wind and surrounding sound.
- Durability and battery: Do not assume a water-resistance rating or battery life until Samsung publishes specifications.
Keeping the ears uncovered can help a listener hear more of the environment, but it does not guarantee awareness in traffic or other busy settings. High playback volume can still damage hearing.
