Watch7 is the lighter everyday option in 40mm and 44mm sizes; the 47mm Ultra adds LTE, a larger battery, titanium construction and outdoor-focused controls. Neither works with an iPhone, and many of the headline health insights depend on Samsung’s phone and Health ecosystem.
This is a look back at the launch, not a claim that these are Samsung’s newest watches: Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 are later-generation alternatives as of August 2026.
What Samsung announced in July 2024
At Galaxy Unpacked in Paris on July 10, 2024, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Watch7 in 40mm and 44mm sizes and the 47mm Galaxy Watch Ultra. The Galaxy Ring was announced at the same event. Watch7 and Ultra went on general sale July 24, 2024; U.S. preorders opened on announcement day. Both watches launched with Wear OS 5 and One UI 6 Watch, and use Samsung’s five-core, 3nm Exynos W1000 processor. Samsung’s launch announcement describes the software and health features.
“Galaxy AI” is Samsung’s umbrella branding for analysis and personalized guidance built around health and activity data. It does not mean that either watch is a general-purpose chatbot running independently on your wrist.

Galaxy Watch7: the everyday model
Watch7 comes in two case sizes, with Bluetooth and separate LTE configurations. Its Super AMOLED display measures 33.3mm at 432 × 432 resolution in the 40mm model, and 37.3mm at 480 × 480 in the 44mm model. The 40mm watch weighs 28.8g and has a 300mAh battery; the 44mm weighs 33.8g and has a 425mAh battery. Both have 2GB RAM, 32GB storage and dual-frequency L1/L5 GPS.
The smaller version is lighter and more likely to suit a small wrist. The 44mm model gives you a larger display and battery. Watch7 is the more conventional choice for notifications, Samsung Health, sleep tracking and workouts without paying for the Ultra’s rugged case and LTE hardware in every configuration. Galaxy Watch Ultra: built for bigger days outdoors
The Ultra combines a circular display with a squarish cushion-shaped case. Its 47mm Grade 4 titanium case, sapphire crystal, 60.5g weight, 590mAh battery and 64GB storage make it a substantially larger watch than Watch7. LTE is standard rather than an optional configuration. A three-button layout includes an orange Quick Button that can launch workouts or other configured actions, and the watch has a larger speaker and microphone system than the mainstream model.
Samsung specifies dual-frequency L1/L5 GPS, 10ATM water resistance, IP68 dust and water protection, and MIL-STD-810H testing. These are ratings and test classifications, not a promise that the watch is indestructible or immune to water damage. Samsung’s current product information claims up to 60 hours with always-on display enabled; its launch material claimed up to 100 hours in power-saving mode. What Galaxy AI and Samsung Health add
- Energy Score: Uses factors including activity, sleep, sleep consistency, heart rate and heart-rate variability to create a readiness-style score.
- Wellness Tips: Offers personalized suggestions based on collected health and activity information.
- Sleep analysis and apnea screening: Sleep tracking and coaching analyze patterns; the apnea feature is intended to identify signs associated with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea over a monitoring period, potentially involving multiple nights of wear.
- AGEs Index: Estimates advanced glycation end-products as a personal wellness metric related to metabolic health and diet. It is not a laboratory measurement or medical result.
- Fitness guidance: Includes personalized heart-rate zones, running analysis and workout guidance.
These features should be read as wellness analysis, not independent medical assessments. The sleep-apnea function is a screening aid, not a diagnosis or substitute for a sleep study. A concerning result is a reason to consult a healthcare professional, not to self-treat. Availability depends on market, device, phone and regulatory approval. ECG and Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification availability can likewise depend on country and may require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. Other health tools include heart-rate monitoring, blood oxygen tracking, body composition measured through bioelectrical impedance analysis, a skin-temperature sensor, cycle tracking, sleep coaching and workout analysis. Accuracy and availability vary by feature and conditions of use; the watch is not a replacement for professional medical advice.

Watch7 and the first Galaxy Watch Ultra require an Android phone running Android 11 or later; Samsung’s U.S. support notes a minimum of 1.5GB of phone memory. They are not compatible with iPhones. Non-Samsung Android phones can pair, but Samsung Galaxy phones provide the broadest access to functions such as ECG and some Galaxy AI experiences.

Samsung says Galaxy AI features require a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung Health and a Samsung Account. The precise feature set can also vary by region, carrier, watch model and software version. An LTE watch also needs carrier support and an eligible cellular plan; the cost and activation terms depend on the carrier.
U.S. prices: launch MSRP versus the 2026 signal
The following are U.S. manufacturer suggested retail prices, not guarantees of current stock or live selling prices. Samsung’s June 2026 MSRP sheet lists the Watch7 at lower suggested prices than its July 2024 launch sheet, while the first Ultra remains listed at $649.99.

The later figures come from Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet. They are not live discounts, refurbished prices or confirmation that a retailer has a model in stock. Check Samsung or the seller for the exact size, connectivity, color, stock and any trade-in terms before buying.
Does either watch make sense to buy in 2026?
Samsung’s later lineup includes Galaxy Watch8, Galaxy Watch8 Classic and Galaxy Watch Ultra2, so compare the current generation before choosing a 2024 watch. Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet lists Watch8 at $349.99–$429.99 depending on size and connectivity, and Ultra2 at $649.99; those are MSRP signals, not live offers. Samsung’s watch comparison page is a starting point, but verify current price and availability directly.

Watch7 is the better fit when
- You want a lighter, smaller everyday watch and find the older model meaningfully cheaper than Watch8.
- You mainly need notifications, sleep, workouts and Samsung Health, rather than the Ultra’s case and controls.
- You want to choose Bluetooth and avoid paying for LTE hardware or cellular service you will not use.
The first Ultra is worth considering when
- You specifically value its larger battery, titanium case, dual-frequency GPS, LTE or dedicated Quick Button.
- You are comfortable wearing a 47mm, 60.5g watch and the older Ultra costs enough less than Ultra2 to justify choosing the previous generation.
At full price, the first Ultra is difficult to justify for ordinary notifications and health tracking alone: many core health and AI features overlap with Watch7, while the Ultra’s extra size, ruggedness and LTE are valuable only if they suit your use. For either model, the decisive questions are phone compatibility, current price and whether you will actually use the hardware differences.
