Samsung’s smartwatch decline did not stop when Galaxy Watch8 arrived. Counterpoint Research estimates, as reported by Android Authority and 9to5Google, put Samsung’s global smartwatch shipments down 28% year over year in Q1 2026, with estimated share falling from 7% to 5%. Those are shipment and market-share figures—not proof that consumer purchases, Samsung’s smartwatch revenue, or its installed base fell by the same amount. Galaxy Watch8 launched on July 9, 2025, so the question now is whether the Watch8 generation can regain momentum, not whether it will.
What the shipment figures say—and what they do not
The available figures point to a real decline in Samsung’s global smartwatch shipments. Counterpoint’s May 2025 update put Samsung shipments down 18% year over year in Q1 2025 among major brands in the HLOS smartwatch market. Separately, Counterpoint data reported by Android Authority and 9to5Google showed a 28% year-over-year shipment decline in Q1 2026 and an estimated market-share drop from 7% to 5%. The reporting periods and market descriptions differ, so the two declines should not be treated as a like-for-like measure of acceleration.
Shipments are units sent into the sales channel, often estimated by market researchers. Sell-through means units consumers actually buy. Revenue is the money Samsung earns, while installed base refers to people already using Galaxy Watches. Shipment estimates can indicate market momentum, but they do not establish the direction or size of changes in those other measures. The cited Q1 2026 coverage attributes its figures to Counterpoint data; Samsung’s own smartwatch revenue is not established by these numbers.

Samsung is losing momentum, but that does not prove the whole category is collapsing
The reported figures describe Samsung’s performance, not a uniform retreat from smartwatches. Apple and Samsung both faced shipment pressure in Counterpoint’s 2025 material, while other brands compete across different price points and use cases. Huawei and Xiaomi can be strong alternatives in some markets; Google’s Pixel Watch competes for Android users, and Garmin appeals to buyers focused on sports and endurance training. Those competitors’ gains do not show that they took Samsung’s exact lost units or customers.
Global averages also conceal regional differences. The available figures do not show that Samsung is declining at the same rate in the United States, South Korea, Europe, China, or other markets. Nor should full-featured smartwatches be conflated with simpler fitness bands: they address overlapping but distinct needs. The evidence supports a claim of weaker Samsung shipment momentum, not a conclusion that consumers have abandoned wearable devices.

What Galaxy Watch8 changed
Samsung announced Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic on July 9, 2025. The generation brought a thinner, lighter standard Watch8 design with a cushion-shaped case and Dynamic Lug bands, plus a display Samsung rates at up to 3,000 nits. Samsung’s corporate report identifies the Watch8 and Classic as July 2025 products with an Exynos W1000 processor, Wear OS 6, and One UI 8 Watch. It lists the standard Watch8 in 40mm and 44mm sizes and the Classic in 46mm.
Samsung lists battery capacities of 325mAh for the 40mm Watch8, 435mAh for the 44mm Watch8, and 445mAh for the 46mm Classic. Capacity figures are not a promise of a particular time between charges; actual endurance depends on use and settings. The software proposition includes Gemini integration, sleep and bedtime guidance, vascular-stress measurement during sleep, Running Coach and personalized training plans, and an Antioxidant Index. These are Samsung-described product capabilities, not independent evidence that the watches outperform rivals.

Feature access can depend on compatible phones, a Samsung account, Samsung Health, software, and regional availability. Health measurements are not a substitute for medical diagnosis. Buyers should check Samsung’s current product and support information for the requirements that apply to their location and phone before relying on a specific feature.
Samsung’s broader health strategy also includes Galaxy Ring, which it positions as a discreet tracker with continuous health monitoring and battery life of up to seven days. A ring could complement a watch for some users or compete with it for people who mainly want health tracking without a screen; there is no evidence here that Galaxy Ring has cannibalized Galaxy Watch sales. Why a better watch may not restore share
Product improvements and market performance answer different questions. Watch8 adds design, software, and health features, but those changes alone do not show that consumers upgraded or that Samsung regained share. Several possible factors could help explain the pressure, although the cited market figures do not establish any one cause.
- Incremental upgrades: Annual changes may not persuade existing owners to replace a watch that still meets their needs.
- Price competition: Samsung faces alternatives at both the premium end and lower price points, and Watch8 carries a higher U.S. MSRP than Watch7.
- Ecosystem limits: Samsung’s strongest integration is with Galaxy phones, while other brands may be more compelling for iPhone owners, Google-centric Android users, or sports specialists.
- Battery and differentiation: Battery life and clear reasons to choose one Wear OS watch over another remain important buying considerations.
- Upgrade timing: Existing watches may continue to receive software support, giving owners less reason to buy a new generation immediately.
Shipments can also move with retailer inventory, launch timing, regional availability, product mix, promotions, broader economic conditions, and comparisons with the previous year. Because Watch8 launched in July 2025 and the later figure covers Q1 2026, the reported decline does not by itself establish that Watch8 caused Samsung’s weakness or that the product failed.

Which watch makes sense for your phone and priorities?
U.S. prices below are MSRP or reference prices from Samsung’s March 2026 price sheet, not guaranteed current transaction prices. Trade-ins, bundles, and retailer discounts can change the amount paid; check the price at purchase. Samsung’s Watch8 product page has also shown a $349.99 starting price before trade-in, but offers can change.
| Watch | Best fit | U.S. price signal | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch8 | Galaxy-phone owners seeking a current, mainstream Android watch for notifications, health tracking, and workouts | $349.99 (40mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi); $379.99 (44mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi); LTE models $399.99 and $429.99, respectively | Higher MSRP than Watch7; some features depend on Samsung devices, services, or regional availability |
| Galaxy Watch7 | Value-focused Samsung buyers who do not need Watch8’s newer design and features | $249.99 (40mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi); $279.99 (44mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi); LTE models $299.99 and $329.99, respectively | Older generation; compare actual discount with the price of Watch8 |
| Galaxy Watch8 Classic | Buyers who prefer a traditional-watch look and rotating bezel | $499.99 Bluetooth/Wi-Fi; $549.99 LTE | More expensive and heavier than the standard Watch8; bulk may bother sleep-focused wearers |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra | Outdoor users who want a large, rugged design and LTE | $649.99 LTE | Large and costly for everyday notifications, casual workouts, or basic health tracking |
| Google Pixel Watch | Android users who prioritize Google services and Pixel integration | Not stated in the cited sources | Compare phone compatibility, battery life, health features, support, and current price |
| Apple Watch | iPhone owners seeking Apple ecosystem integration | Not stated in the cited sources | Not a practical choice for Samsung-phone users; phone compatibility is decisive |
| Garmin | Runners, cyclists, hikers, and endurance athletes prioritizing training tools, GPS, and battery life | Not stated in the cited sources | Less focused on app, messaging, and general smartwatch integration than Samsung or Google watches |
For a Galaxy-phone owner, Watch8 is the current mainstream choice; a Watch7 can be better value if the actual discount is substantial. The Classic makes most sense when its bezel and appearance matter enough to justify the added cost and size. The Ultra is aimed at buyers who will use its rugged, outdoor-oriented form and LTE rather than people who just want a basic smartwatch.
For other phones, start with compatibility: Apple Watch is the natural option for an iPhone, while Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch are both candidates for Android users, subject to feature and device requirements. If structured training and endurance matter more than apps and messaging, Garmin deserves a look. Samsung’s Watch8 product page and March 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet provide the cited Samsung price references; consult the Google, Apple, and Garmin pages for their current product ranges.
What a recovery would require
Watch8 improves Samsung’s product proposition, but the available figures do not establish a market-share turnaround. Regaining momentum may require more than another annual feature list: clearer differentiation between models, competitive effective pricing, useful battery life, and health features available across more of the intended customer base. Samsung’s wider combination of phones, watches, Ring, Buds, and Samsung Health may make its ecosystem more useful, but whether that strategy brings people to Galaxy Watches—or shifts some health-focused buyers to Ring—remains unsettled by the cited evidence.
The measured answer is therefore two-part: Samsung’s global smartwatch shipments and estimated share weakened before Watch8, and reported shipments fell further in Q1 2026 after its launch. That is evidence of continued pressure, not proof that Watch8 itself failed or that Samsung’s consumer sales fell by the same percentages.
