Mineral glass may suit buyers who put more weight on the flexibility and impact trade-off manufacturers describe, or on the cost of the watch overall. Neither material is unbreakable, and the exact watch’s construction matters as much as its crystal label.
What is the difference between sapphire and mineral glass?
The key distinction is hardness versus impact behavior. Sapphire is very hard and highly scratch-resistant, but a sufficiently heavy impact can shatter it. Mineral glass is less scratch-resistant, while Citizen describes it as more flexible and less prone to shattering than sapphire. Those are broad manufacturer descriptions, not guarantees for every watch or accident.

TAG Heuer gives sapphire a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale, a relative measure of hardness. That rating helps explain its scratch resistance; it is not a measure of toughness and does not mean the crystal cannot break. TAG Heuer’s explanation of sapphire crystal also identifies mineral glass as tempered watchmaking glass.
How the materials compare
| Consideration | Sapphire crystal | Mineral glass |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday scratches | Highly scratch-resistant. Timex calls it the hardest crystal it offers and says it is near impossible to scratch. | Can scratch. Timex says it is more scratch-resistant than acrylic but less resistant than sapphire. |
| Impact | Can shatter under a heavy impact, according to Timex. | Citizen describes it as more flexible and less prone to shattering than sapphire; results still depend on the watch and impact. |
| Cost | Timex says sapphire costs more than other crystal materials. The actual price difference depends on the watches being compared. | Common across a broad range of watches. Compare actual models rather than assuming a fixed saving. |
| Damage and repair | A damaged crystal may need replacement; ask the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker about the specific model. | TAG Heuer says scratched or chipped mineral glass must be replaced rather than polished like acrylic. |
| Glare and viewing | An anti-reflective coating can reduce glare; sapphire alone does not guarantee a glare-free view. | Check the particular watch’s coating and crystal shape. Material alone does not determine readability. |
Which crystal is better for your use?
Choose sapphire if avoiding scratches is the priority
If your watch often brushes against desks, bags, or other everyday surfaces, sapphire’s higher scratch resistance is a practical advantage. It is also a strong fit if you want the crystal to retain a clean appearance with regular wear. It is not scratch-proof, and a hard impact can still break it.

Consider mineral glass if impact trade-offs or overall cost matter more
If you give more weight to the flexibility and lower shattering tendency manufacturers associate with mineral glass, it may be a sensible choice. It can also be found in watches that cost less overall, although the crystal alone does not determine a watch’s price. Mineral glass is more vulnerable to scratches, and a scratched or chipped crystal generally calls for replacement rather than polishing.
How to check the crystal on a specific watch
- Open the official product page for the exact model and variant you are considering.
- Find the product’s “Specs” section and look for the crystal material. Timex states: “The type of watch crystal can be found under “Specs” on each product page.”
- Check the separate details for anti-reflective coating, crystal shape, and intended use if those matter to you. Do not infer the crystal material from the brand, price, or appearance.
- If the watch is damaged, contact its manufacturer or a watchmaker with the model information before arranging service. Replacement parts must match the particular watch.
For reference, Timex’s guide to watch crystal materials describes its crystal options, while Citizen’s comparison explains its view of mineral crystal and sapphire. IWC’s technical details describe how anti-reflective coating reduces glare; coating should be considered separately from the crystal material.

What matters beyond the material
Crystal shape, coatings, and case construction differ by model and affect how a watch performs in use. The material label alone cannot predict whether a specific crystal will survive a particular knock or how easy the dial will be to read. Check the individual watch’s specifications and intended use rather than treating sapphire or mineral glass as a guarantee.
