Its official specifications do not list a compass bezel or compass function, so it should not be treated as a tool that can reliably guide you when lost. Seiko’s sun-based compass instructions apply to equipped models and describe the result as only a rough indication.
What the Seiko 5 Sports SRPJ85 offers
The SRPJ85 combines a 36.4 mm case with Seiko’s 4R36 automatic movement, manual winding, and a day/date display. Seiko lists approximately 41 hours of power reserve, a curved Hardlex crystal, LumiBrite on the hands and indexes, a nylon band, and 10 bar water resistance. Its lug-to-lug length is 44.4 mm, thickness is 12.5 mm, and lug width is 18 mm. Seiko’s US product page listed the price at USD 315 when retrieved; price and availability may change.

Is the SRPJ85 a compass watch?
No compass bezel or compass ring appears in the SRPJ85’s official specifications. Seiko’s manual describes a sun-based direction method for watches fitted with a compass bezel or ring; it is not a special SRPJ85 feature. The manual says, “The compass is so designed to provide only a rough indication of directions, and should not be used where accuracy is critical.” Seiko Watch Corporation’s instruction manual also limits the method to situations where the sun is visible or its position is known, and notes that it may not work properly in certain low-latitude areas at certain times of year.
What Seiko’s sun method says
For the Northern Hemisphere, Seiko instructs the wearer to keep the dial level, point the hour hand toward the sun, and position the “S (South)” mark on the rotating compass bezel midway between 12 o’clock and the hour hand’s indicated time. The Southern Hemisphere procedure differs. These directions apply only to models with the relevant compass bezel or ring, and offer rough orientation—not reliable navigation or a rescue method.

The SRPG35 is the larger of the two field-style models. The listed dimensions and specifications can help with case-size and strap-width decisions; they do not establish how either watch will feel on a particular wrist or how accurately it will run in everyday use.

Quick Recap
What to consider before choosing
- Case fit: Compare both diameter and lug-to-lug length against a watch you already find comfortable. The SRPJ85 is smaller on both listed dimensions.
- Strap compatibility: Choose an 18 mm strap for the SRPJ85 or a 20 mm strap for the SRPG35.
- Navigation needs: The SRPJ85’s listed features do not include a compass. Neither model should be assumed to provide compass guidance based on its field-style design.
- Price and value: Seiko’s US SRPJ85 listing showed USD 315 at retrieval, but that regional listing is not a current cross-retailer price comparison or a broad value ranking.
