The Seiko Astron SSE121 is a 2017 limited-edition GPS Solar chronograph designed with Giugiaro Design. Its 8X82 caliber uses light power for GPS time and time-zone adjustment, while the case and dial details reinterpret a Seiko-Giugiaro chronograph from 1983. Seiko announced 3,000 pieces; its launch price and release schedule are historical, not evidence of current availability or value.

How does the 8X82 GPS Solar movement work?
The 8X82 uses light power for GPS-controlled time and time-zone adjustment. Seiko says local time can be adjusted anywhere in the world at the touch of a button. It also cautions: “If there are changes in the region / time zone, manual time zone selection may be required.” This means GPS functionality should not be read as a guarantee that the watch will always infer the correct local time zone automatically.
Timekeeping and chronograph functions
- Chronograph timing up to six hours, in one-fifth-second increments.
- Perpetual calendar specified through 2100.
- Signal-reception-result indication, daylight-saving-time function, and power-save function.
- World time: Seiko’s general announcement lists 40 time zones; its German regional release lists 39. The published specifications therefore differ by source and market.
Seiko states accuracy of ±15 seconds per month without GPS reception, at temperatures from 5°C to 35°C. That is the manufacturer’s stated condition-specific figure, not a claim about accuracy while GPS reception is active or under all temperatures.

Why does the design reference a 1983 chronograph?
The SSE121 revisits a Seiko quartz chronograph designed with Giugiaro Design in 1983 for motorsport. The original’s offset case was intended to make the chronograph buttons accessible while riding. The 2017 Astron carries the collaboration forward through an aerodynamic, sporty case, black, red, and green accents, and distinctive hands and markers. Its case back uses a wheel motif around the individual serial number. Giugiaro Design also identifies the collaboration on its project page.
