Seiko Izul: The Discontinued Japanese Watch That’s Hard to Find

A short-lived Japanese-market Seiko, the Izul pairs a 47 mm titanium case with top-mounted chronograph controls. Here’s what is known about its history, movement, and possible secondhand availability.

The Seiko Izul is a discontinued, Japanese-market watch line with a striking bullhead-style layout: its crown and chronograph pushers sit at 12 o’clock. Phillips describes production as lasting a couple of years between 2007 and 2009 and documents a 47 mm titanium example powered by Spring Drive caliber 5R85. You can’t buy one new from current production, but Phillips’ 2024 auction catalogue shows that an example has appeared on the secondary market; it does not establish what is available or what one costs today.

What is a Seiko Izul?

The Izul was a short-lived Seiko watch line made for the Japanese market, according to Phillips, which describes its production period as a couple of years between 2007 and 2009. The available evidence does not establish a production total, and Seiko’s general heritage history does not independently document the Izul’s launch or run.

Its design takes inspiration from Olympic chronographs, Phillips says. The crown and chronograph pushers are positioned at 12 o’clock, giving the watch the top-control arrangement commonly described as bullhead-style. Phillips’ 2024 auction catalogue calls the Izul “a true hidden gem of watch collecting”; that is the auction house’s characterization, not a measured consensus.

What makes the Izul unusual?

A 47 mm titanium case

Phillips gives the documented example a 47 mm titanium case. That is a substantial diameter for a wristwatch and may make the fit challenging for some wearers; there is no published wear test or supported wrist-size recommendation to apply to every person.

Controls at the top of the case

With its crown and chronograph pushers at 12 o’clock, the Izul departs from the more familiar side-mounted layout. The placement reflects the chronograph-inspired design described by Phillips and makes the watch visually distinctive.

Spring Drive in the documented example

Phillips identifies its auction example as using Spring Drive caliber 5R85 and specifies that it has no GMT function. Seiko’s official 5R85 instruction manual explicitly addresses IZUL owners, opening with: “You are now the proud owner of an IZUL watch.” These sources document that example and the manual’s intended owners; they do not establish that every possible Izul variant has identical specifications.

Why is the Seiko Izul so rare?

Phillips says the line was produced exclusively for Japan for a couple of years between 2007 and 2009, then quickly discontinued after lukewarm reception in Japan. The auction house suggests the watch’s size and unusual appearance may have contributed. That is Phillips’ interpretation, not a located Seiko statement explaining the decision.

Phillips describes the Izul as rare and obscure among collectors, but this is a qualitative assessment. No production figure or other quantified measure of rarity is established by the available sources. Its brief reported production period and discontinued status help explain why it is not a regular current-production option, but they do not prove a particular market value or scarcity level.

Can you still buy a Seiko Izul?

The Izul is no longer in current production. A pre-owned or auction appearance is possible: Phillips’ 2024 catalogue records an example, described there as being in excellent condition with a complete accessory set. That historical listing does not establish current stock, a present-day price, or how often examples come to market.

If you encounter one, assess the individual watch rather than assuming all examples are alike. Useful checks include:

  • Reference or model number: confirm the specific version and compare its details with the seller’s documentation.
  • Condition and originality: ask what has been replaced, repaired, refinished, or altered.
  • Set and provenance: establish what accessories and records are included; completeness is not guaranteed or required for every example.
  • Service history: request dated records and clarify what work was performed.
  • Seller protections: check authentication procedures, return terms, and the seller’s stated condition policy.
  • Asking price: compare it with relevant, verifiable examples rather than treating an auction appearance as a price guide.

Care and servicing

Seiko’s official 5R85 instruction manual includes sections on after-sales service, replacement parts, preserving watch quality, troubleshooting, and specifications. Owners should consult the manual and contact Seiko or a qualified watch-service provider for model-specific guidance. The manual’s discussion of replacement parts does not confirm that any particular part is currently available, and current service costs or turnaround times are not established here.

Is the Izul a Credor or Grand Seiko?

The available sources do not establish the Izul as a Credor or Grand Seiko collection, so it is best described as a Seiko line. Seiko’s heritage material says Credor began in 1974 as a luxury brand focused on precious metals and jewelry and records a Credor Spring Drive Sonnerie in 2006; that brand history is context, not evidence that Izul belonged to Credor.
