Seiko’s 2009 Ananta Spring Drive lineup comprised four references: two chronographs powered by caliber 5R86 and two GMT watches powered by caliber 5R66. The GMT models add a 24-hour hand and time-difference adjustment; the chronographs add stopwatch timing. All four were listed with 46.0 mm cases, while the GMT models were thinner. These are historical models, and Seiko’s original Japanese launch prices are not current market valuations.

What is a Seiko Ananta Spring Drive watch?

Ananta was a Seiko watch line announced in 2009. Its Spring Drive models combine a mainspring as the sole power source with an electronic control system that regulates timekeeping. Seiko describes Spring Drive as delivering precision comparable to quartz while using the unwinding mainspring for power. Unlike a conventional ticking seconds hand, the Spring Drive seconds hand moves smoothly around the dial. These are Seiko’s descriptions, not independent test findings. Seiko’s 5R65/5R66 manual

The 5R66 and related 5R65 are automatic movements that can also be wound manually. They include a power-reserve indicator. Seiko specifies approximately 72 hours of operation when fully wound; actual continuous running time may be shorter depending on use. The manufacturer states accuracy of ±15 seconds per month (equivalent to ±1 second per day) under wrist-worn conditions from 5°C to 35°C. That is a stated specification, not a guarantee for every individual watch or a result of independent testing. Manual; Seiko 5R65/5R66 specifications

Which Ananta models have Spring Drive?

Seiko’s March 26, 2009 announcement named four Spring Drive references, with a scheduled Japanese release date of September 19, 2009. The figures below are the historical specifications and recommended prices Seiko published for Japan at launch. Seiko’s Ananta announcement

Reference Type Caliber Case diameter Thickness 2009 Japanese recommended price
SAEA001 Chronograph 5R86 46.0 mm 15.8 mm ¥682,500
SAEA003 Chronograph 5R86 46.0 mm 15.8 mm ¥682,500
SAEA005 GMT 5R66 46.0 mm 14.2 mm ¥420,000
SAEA007 GMT 5R66 46.0 mm 14.2 mm ¥420,000

Seiko’s announcement distinguishes the two references within each type, but the summarized specifications above do not establish differences in dial or band configuration. Check the precise reference and the individual watch’s configuration when assessing a specific example.

GMT or chronograph: which function fits?

Choose the 5R66 GMT for time-zone tracking

The 5R66 has a 24-hour hand and a time-difference adjustment function. Those are the documented reasons to choose an SAEA005 or SAEA007 if tracking another time zone is more useful than stopwatch timing. The movement also has a date display and power-reserve indicator. Seiko’s 5R65/5R66 manual

Choose the 5R86 chronograph for elapsed-time measurement

SAEA001 and SAEA003 are the Spring Drive chronographs in the launch lineup. They use caliber 5R86 and were listed at 15.8 mm thick, compared with 14.2 mm for the GMT references. The launch announcement identifies their chronograph type but does not supply a detailed account of how to operate the timing functions. Seiko’s Ananta announcement

How large are the Ananta Spring Drive models?

Every named reference has a listed 46.0 mm case diameter. The GMT pair is 14.2 mm thick, and the chronograph pair is 15.8 mm thick. The chronographs are therefore 1.6 mm thicker according to Seiko’s launch specifications. Case diameter and thickness are useful first checks, but they do not by themselves establish how a watch will fit a particular wrist.

What do the original prices tell you?

For the Japanese launch, Seiko recommended ¥682,500 for SAEA001 and SAEA003 and ¥420,000 for SAEA005 and SAEA007. These are 2009 historical Japanese recommended retail prices, not current asking prices or realized sale values. Current availability, condition-adjusted valuations and resale prices for these references are not established here.

When considering a listing, verify the reference number against the watch and confirm its condition, included band or bracelet, seller information and return terms. The launch specifications identify the original configurations, but do not establish the condition or completeness of any watch offered today.
