The Seiko 5 Sports Style GMT is a compelling summer watch if you want casual SKX-inspired styling, an automatic second-time-zone display and a manufacturer-rated 10 bar water resistance. It is not a universal “best”: its 42.5 mm case will not suit every wrist, and its GMT hand does not offer the local-time jumping function frequent travelers may prefer.
Why it makes sense as a summer watch
The case for the Style GMT is practical rather than a claim of objective superiority. Seiko combines a stainless-steel case and bracelet with a two-color rotating bezel, luminous hands and markers, and a GMT display useful for keeping another time zone in view. The design takes cues from the SKX series, including the bracelet’s five-row styling. Those features suit casual wear and travel, while the 10 bar rating makes it more versatile around water than a watch intended only for dry conditions.
In his 2022 review, Monochrome’s Brice Goulard called the three initial references “serious contenders” for the best summer watch. That is an editorial opinion, not a market-wide ranking or a test result. Whether this is the right summer watch for you depends on fit, water activities, GMT use, bracelet comfort, color and the price available in your region.
What the Seiko 5 Sports Style GMT offers
Three initial color variants
The initial references are variants of the same watch family: SSK001K1 has a black dial and black-and-grey bezel; SSK003K1 has a blue dial and blue-and-black bezel; and SSK005K1 has an orange dial and black-and-grey bezel. The two-color bezel is designed to distinguish night and day hours at a glance. Seiko’s U.S. product page identifies the SSK003 as part of 5 Sports, SKX series.

These are manufacturer specifications on Seiko’s SSK003 product page, accessed in 2026; they are not independent measurements. Seiko’s U.S. page displayed USD 495 at that time, so treat that as a dated listing observation, not a guaranteed current price. Monochrome reported a EUR 470 launch price and July 2022 availability for the original references; that is historical launch context, not current pricing.
How the GMT works—and where it falls short for travel
The 4R34’s 24-hour hand lets you read a second time zone, which can be useful for tracking home while away or keeping another region’s time visible. The practical limitation identified in Monochrome’s review is that the watch lacks the local-time jumping function found on a traveler’s GMT. For frequent trips across time zones, that means the local-time adjustment is less convenient than on a movement designed to move the local hour hand independently in one-hour increments.
That distinction matters more than the word “GMT” alone. If you mainly want a second time zone displayed alongside local time, the SSK003’s function may be enough. If you often land in new time zones and want to reset local time quickly without disrupting the other display, prioritize a traveler-style GMT instead.
Water resistance: useful for summer, not a dive certification
Seiko rates the SSK003 at 10 bar. That manufacturer rating supports considering it for ordinary water exposure appropriate to the watch, but it is not the same as professional-diving certification. A pressure rating should not be converted into a guaranteed safe depth: real-world suitability depends on the activity and the condition of the watch, including its seals. If your plans center on scuba diving or another demanding water sport, choose a watch explicitly intended and specified for that use.

Check the dimensions against your wrist
At 42.5 mm across, 13.6 mm thick and 46.0 mm lug-to-lug, the SSK003 has substantial presence. Diameter alone does not determine comfort; lug-to-lug span and case thickness also affect how a watch sits and catches on clothing. If possible, try it on before buying, especially if you usually wear smaller watches. The listed weight is 161 g, a factor to consider if you prefer a lighter watch for all-day summer wear.

- Day difference + 45 to -35 seconds
- Mechanical automatic movement (with hand winding)

Keep the bracelet or change the strap
The steel bracelet reinforces the sporty look, but bracelet comfort is personal, and HiConsumption’s 2025 summer-watch guide flags it as a possible downside. Seiko lists 22 mm lug spacing, so a compatible 22 mm strap is an option if you prefer a different feel or appearance. Monochrome discusses rubber, fabric and NATO-style straps as summer-friendly possibilities; check the exact strap’s width, construction and suitability before purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which variant is the better fit?
Choose by the dial and bezel combination you will enjoy wearing, not by treating the colors as different technical models: the initial SSK001K1, SSK003K1 and SSK005K1 share the Style GMT family identity. Black is the most restrained of the three listed looks, blue offers a familiar sport-watch palette, and orange is the most conspicuous. These are style judgments, not differences in the listed movement or case specifications.
Before buying, verify the exact reference, current regional price and stock, seller status and warranty. The U.S. SSK003 page’s displayed price and third-party merchant listings can change; a listing for one variant does not establish current availability of another.

- A good match: someone who wants an automatic watch with a second-time-zone display, casual steel-bracelet styling and a maker-rated 10 bar water resistance.
- Try it on first: anyone uncertain about a 42.5 mm case, 46.0 mm lug-to-lug length or the listed 161 g weight.
- Look elsewhere: frequent travelers who need a jumping local-hour hand, or buyers whose water activities call for a watch specifically intended for professional diving.
On balance, the Seiko 5 Sports Style GMT is a credible summer-and-travel choice, especially if its size works for you and a second-time-zone display is enough. Calling it the best summer watch is a matter of taste; the fit and GMT trade-offs are concrete reasons to compare it with your own needs before deciding.
