The newer 5X63 HAB001 is slimmer and runs its chronograph for up to 24 hours; the 5X83 SSH163 offers a different movement and a 12-hour chronograph. Both are large titanium watches with GPS time-zone adjustment and solar charging. Seiko’s specifications make them compelling if those functions matter to you, but they do not establish real-world fit or independent performance.
Which Astron GPS Solar Chronograph is this review about?
Seiko sells multiple Astron references under the GPS Solar Chronograph label. This comparison focuses on two documented models: the 5X83 SSH163 and the newer 5X63 HAB001. Their specifications are not interchangeable. Seiko’s 5X83 overview and May 12, 2026 announcement describe different movement generations; the individual SSH163 and HAB001 pages provide reference-specific details.
| Reference | Movement | Chronograph | Case dimensions | Other published specifications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SSH163 | 5X83 GPS Solar | Up to 12 hours; 1/20-second increments | 44.1 mm diameter × 14.4 mm thick; 50 mm lug-to-lug | Titanium with super-hard coating, dual-curved sapphire crystal, 10 bar water resistance, 38-city world time and dual time |
| HAB001 | 5X63 GPS Solar | Up to 24 hours; 1/20-second increments | 43.4 mm diameter × 12.4 mm thick; 50 mm lug-to-lug | Titanium with super-hard coating, sapphire crystal with super-clear coating, 10 bar water resistance, 38-city world time and dual time |
These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent measurements. The 2025 5X83 lineup includes other references, and the 2026 5X63 announcement covers HAB001–HAB004; check the exact model’s specifications before applying any comparison to another Astron.
What do GPS time adjustment and no-signal accuracy mean?
GPS reception and timekeeping without reception are separate features. Seiko describes the movements as receiving GPS signals to adjust the time and time zone. Its May 2026 announcement also lists high-speed time-zone adjustment, time transfer, a perpetual calendar to 2100, automatic daylight-saving-time adjustment and world time for 38 time zones. Seiko’s promotional description says the watch adjusts to time zones with a button press while generating energy from light, but its release notes that manual selection may be needed when the region, time zone or daylight-saving rules change.

For accuracy without GPS reception, Seiko specifies ±15 seconds per month while the watch operates between 5°C and 35°C. That is the maker’s stated no-signal accuracy range; it is not a GPS reception accuracy test or an independent measurement. The two cited models are solar powered, with Seiko estimating approximately six months of operation when fully charged and approximately two years in power-save mode.
How does the 5X83 compare with the 5X63?
Choose the 5X63 HAB001 for a longer chronograph and thinner listed case
The HAB001’s chronograph runs for up to 24 hours, compared with up to 12 hours for the SSH163. Its listed thickness is 12.4 mm rather than 14.4 mm, while both examples have a 50 mm lug-to-lug measurement. Seiko’s 2026 announcement presents the 5X63 as a newer GPS Solar movement with time-zone adjustment and time-transfer functions.

Choose the 5X83 SSH163 if its specific design and features suit you
The SSH163 has the 5X83 movement, a dual-curved sapphire crystal and a 12-hour chronograph. Seiko’s 5X83 overview highlights faster main/sub-dial time transfer than the preceding 5X53 and a bracelet buckle adjustment system. Those are manufacturer-described functions; they do not establish how comfortable the watch feels on a particular wrist.
Will an Astron GPS Solar Chronograph fit your wrist?
These are substantial watches by their published dimensions. The cited SSH163 measures 44.1 mm across and 14.4 mm thick; the HAB001 is 43.4 mm across and 12.4 mm thick. Both list a 50 mm lug-to-lug measurement. Diameter alone does not predict fit: lug-to-lug span, case shape, bracelet articulation and wrist shape also matter. No hands-on fit assessment is established here, so try on the exact reference if possible.
Rank #3
- Tachymeter Feature: Measure Speed
- Secure Case Back: Screw Type
Seiko lists the cited examples in titanium with a super-hard coating. The 5X83 overview describes a bracelet buckle adjustment system, and the 2026 announcement names quick-change silicone strap references RA01B14BK and RA01B14WT for compatible 5X63 models. Confirm compatibility for the exact watch before buying a strap; those references are not established as universal Astron fittings.
How much does the 5X63 cost?
Prices vary by market and date, so these figures should not be treated as current local quotes. In its May 12, 2026 announcement, Seiko listed European recommended prices of €2,800 for HAB001 and HAB002, €2,700 for HAB003 and €3,000 for limited HAB004. Seiko’s US product pages list HAB001 at USD 2,700 and limited HAB004 at USD 2,900; listed prices and availability can change. Check the local Seiko page or an authorized seller for current price, taxes, stock and warranty details.

Is the Seiko Astron GPS Solar Chronograph worth it?
It is easiest to justify if you travel across time zones and value GPS-based time adjustment, solar charging, dual time and a chronograph in one watch. The 5X63 HAB001 has the more practical published chronograph duration and thinner case of these two examples; the 5X83 SSH163 has its own movement and bracelet-adjustment features. Either remains a large watch, and the specifications alone cannot tell you whether its size or wearing comfort will work for you.
This is a specification-based assessment, not a hands-on review: Seiko’s pages and announcement establish the listed functions, dimensions and prices, but do not establish independent performance results or long-term owner experience.
