A specialist account reports a 35.5 mm case and 19 mm lug width, but examples vary: jewel counts, dial details and lume are not established as one universal specification. Measure a specific watch and inspect its condition before buying a strap or judging originality.
What is the Seiko Champion J13040?
Michael Stockton’s 2021 Fratello article on the Champion J13040 places it among Seiko’s early-1960s sporty watches. It describes a simple central time display, hand-wound Seikosha movement and stainless-steel construction, with dial details that give the otherwise restrained design some character.
According to that account, examples have a slender polished bezel, angled cross-drilled lugs, a domed acrylic crystal and an engraved snap caseback. The article mentions grey or silver dials and numerous variations. These are descriptions from a specialist article, not a complete manufacturer specification or exhaustive variant guide.

Do not treat the 17-jewel count as a specification shared by every J13040. Fratello’s narrative says later versions added jewels and Seahorse dial text, so the dial markings and movement of an individual watch matter. Seiko’s Museum Ginza collection and heritage history offer broad context for the first half of the 1960s, including the 1960 Grand Seiko launch and the 1963 Sportsmatic 5 release. Neither page specifically documents the J13040.

How to assess a J13040 example
There is no established, comprehensive factory variant guide in the cited sources. Fratello discusses dial-font differences, luminous and non-luminous versions, and later jewel and Seahorse markings. Treat these as useful clues rather than a definitive checklist of factory-correct combinations.
- Compare lume: On a luminous-dial example, check whether the hands appear luminous too. A mismatch can point to later replacement or modification, but the cited account does not establish every factory configuration.
- Inspect dial and hands: Look closely for staining, refinishing or relumed hands and markers. Clear, detailed photographs are more useful than a seller’s broad claim of originality.
- Check the case and crystal: Look for a missing bezel, wear or damage to the case, and condition issues in the domed crystal.
- Ask for movement and caseback evidence: Request photographs of the movement and inside case markings where possible. Fratello notes that the serial number is inside the caseback on the examples it discusses; that observation alone does not establish a complete dating method.
- Request service details: A watch that runs is not necessarily original or recently serviced. Ask what work was done and when, and distinguish documented service from an unsupported assurance.
A dealer listing describes one J13040 as a 1963 example, but that is seller-provided information, not proof of the model’s full production span. Fratello’s auction-price discussion dates to 2021 and describes outcomes as uncertain, so it should not be read as a current valuation. For a present-day purchase, assess originality, condition, service evidence and the seller’s documentation rather than relying on that historical range.

What strap fits the Seiko J13040?
Fratello reports a 19 mm lug width, making a 19 mm watch strap a reasonable starting point. Measure between the lugs on the specific watch before ordering: the reported width is not an assurance that every example or replacement part measures identically, and it does not make a strap original to the model.
Fratello also says beads-of-rice bracelets are associated with these watches but are rarely found in decent condition. A bracelet’s style alone does not authenticate it as an original J13040 accessory.
