The IWC Fliegerchronograph IW3706 is a distinctive 39 mm automatic pilot chronograph that IWC introduced in 1994 and produced through 2005, according to IWC and specialist auction catalogues. Its compact, instrument-like layout and day/date display give it a clear identity among larger pilot chronographs. Whether a particular example is a “Wrist Game” depends less on a headline price than on its condition, originality, documentation and how it compares with recent sales of similar watches.
What makes the IW3706 distinctive?
The IW3706 pairs a 39 mm stainless-steel case with a three-register chronograph dial and day/date display. Phillips describes a circa-1999 example with an automatic movement and a vertical register arrangement. At 39 mm, it offers a more restrained wrist presence than many contemporary pilot chronographs while retaining the legibility and functional, instrument-like character associated with the design.
IWC’s 2018 announcement calls the Ref. 3706 the first mechanical “Fliegerchronograph” the company presented. IWC’s original German statement reads: “1994 stellte IWC mit der Referenz 3706 den ersten mechanischen „Fliegerchronographen“ vor.” In translation: “In 1994, IWC presented the first mechanical ‘Fliegerchronograph’ with reference 3706.” IWC Schaffhausen, 8 May 2018.
When was it made, and what came after?
IWC dates the IW3706’s debut to 1994. Phillips and Dorotheum both describe its production as ending in 2005. In 2018, IWC introduced the IW377724, a revival that the company said reused elements of the 1994 design. That later model is useful context, but its specifications should not be assumed to describe the original IW3706.

Keep the IW3706 distinct from the ceramic Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Ref. IW370501, another IWC pilot chronograph appearing in the company’s historical references. The explicit identification of the IW3706 as the 1994 Fliegerchronograph comes from IWC’s 2018 announcement and specialist catalogues; the historical-references page provides broader context rather than a technical record for the IW3706. What do the catalogues say about its specifications?
| Detail | What the source records |
|---|---|
| Case | Phillips describes a stainless-steel case measuring 39 mm for its circa-1999 example. Dorotheum describes its circa-2000 and circa-2006 examples as approximately 39–40 mm. |
| Dial and functions | Phillips records a three-register chronograph with day/date. Its separate early IW3706-003 catalogue describes a bracelet and tritium indicators marked by “T” around “SWISS MADE.” |
| Movement designation | Phillips lists caliber 7750, automatic, 25 jewels, for its circa-1999 example. Dorotheum lists caliber 7922, 25 jewels, for its examples. These catalogue descriptions differ; do not treat them as interchangeable without confirming the exact watch. |
| Magnetic protection | Dorotheum reports soft-iron magnetic shielding for its documented examples. IWC also describes a soft-iron shield on the later IW377724; that later-model statement alone is not a complete technical specification for every IW3706. |
The movement-label discrepancy is worth resolving before purchase. Ask for documentation tied to the individual watch and have its movement and reference assessed by a qualified specialist; the cited catalogue entries do not explain why they use different caliber designations. Phillips’ circa-1999 catalogue entry is available here; Dorotheum’s auction records are here.

Which design details belong to the later IW377724?
IWC’s 2018 description of the IW377724 specifies a quarter-second scale, rectangular luminous hands, day/date, soft-iron protection against magnetic fields and a crystal secured against sudden cockpit pressure changes. IWC presented that watch as a revival recalling the 1994 original, but those details are sourced to the IW377724 announcement, not established here as a complete IW3706 specification. Read IWC’s announcement.
How should you judge an IW3706 listing?
Use comparable examples and documented condition rather than relying on the reference name alone. The auction records show variation in accessories and configuration, but they do not establish universal premiums or a complete authentication procedure.

- Bracelet or strap: Confirm what is included, whether it is original, and whether the bracelet fits. A strap or bracelet difference is a comparison point, not proof of a particular value adjustment.
- Box, papers and history: Ask what accessories, service records and provenance documentation accompany the watch. A catalogue example with accessories does not establish that every complete set commands a particular premium.
- Movement and reference: Request clear documentation for the individual watch and independent specialist assessment, particularly given the differing caliber labels in the cited catalogues.
- Price: Compare recent completed sales in the same market and condition band. Asking prices and old results are not substitutes for like-for-like sold comparisons.
Do old auction results establish a fair price?
No. Phillips records HK$37,800 realized for its circa-1999 IW3706 lot; the sale date is not shown on the cited page. Dorotheum records EUR 4,096, including buyer charges and VAT, for a circa-2000 example sold on 3 December 2021. They are results from different auctions and contexts, not a current market average or a valuation of any watch now offered. Phillips lot record; Dorotheum lot record.
For a current purchase decision, first match the watch’s condition, configuration and completeness to genuinely comparable completed sales in the same market. Then weigh the documentation and any specialist inspection against the asking price. The available records provide useful reference points, but they do not establish a representative current price or a quantified premium for accessories, originality or condition.
