Comparing the two example references, the Citizen Nighthawk CA0897-04H is the easier one to price-check: Citizen’s U.S. product page listed it at $575 when checked in 2026. The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC961 publishes more movement figures (accuracy and power reserve) and has a smaller 39 mm case, but the Seiko page cited here shows no current price. The better value depends on your wrist size, the functions you will use, and the price you can verify today. Both examples use light-powered quartz chronograph movements and carry a 10 bar (100 m-class) water-resistance rating, so the real differences lie in size, crystal, published specifications, price and warranty terms.
How the two example watches compare on paper
The table below uses manufacturer specifications from each brand’s U.S. product page. Dimensions are manufacturer measurements, and “not stated” means the cited page does not give that value.

Movement: two light-powered quartz chronographs
Both watches avoid battery changes by running on light, but the two brands describe their systems differently. Seiko’s published figures are the more specific of the two.

Seiko Caliber V192 (solar)
Seiko lists accuracy at ±15 seconds per month and says the watch operates for approximately six months when fully charged. Treat the six-month figure as a product specification, not a guarantee of identical duration under every light condition. Seiko’s own product page is the place to confirm the wording for the exact reference you are considering.
Citizen Caliber B612 (Eco-Drive)
Citizen’s product page for the CA0897-04H says the watch is “Powered by any light source, continuously and sustainably, eliminating the need to replace watch batteries.” That is promotional language from the manufacturer. The cited Citizen extract gives no accuracy or power-reserve figure, so you cannot make a like-for-like accuracy or reserve comparison between these two references from the sources here.

Size and fit
The Seiko is 39.0 mm across and the Citizen is 42 mm wide, so the Citizen has the larger dial. The lug widths differ as well (20 mm for the SSC961, 22 mm for the CA0897-04H), which matters for strap choice. Neither brand’s cited page gives lug-to-lug length, and that figure determines how a watch sits on a small wrist. If you have a narrow wrist, try both on before deciding, and do not assume the diameter figure alone tells you how the case will wear.
What the price gap buys
Price is where the comparison is least settled, because the two brands’ cited figures come from different dates and different references.

Seiko: an older price, not a current quote
Seiko’s 2022 announcement gave a $750 recommended retail price for the SSC911 and SSC913. Those are different references from the SSC961 discussed here, and the figure is historical. The cited Seiko product page for the SSC961 does not show a current price, so this article cannot state what the SSC961 costs today in the U.S. Check Seiko’s U.S. site or an authorized dealer for the exact reference before comparing it with the Citizen.
Citizen: a price ladder across three references
Citizen’s U.S. listings show a clear spread of prices. These are product-page listings, not market averages or sale-price histories.

| Citizen model | Listed U.S. price (product page) | Movement | Case | Crystal | Water resistance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CA7041-07X | $340 | Eco-Drive, Caliber B642 | 41 mm | Mineral crystal | 100 m |
| CA0897-04H | $575 | Eco-Drive, Caliber B612 | 42 mm | Sapphire | 100 m / 10 bar |
| Endeavor CA4730-08E | $476 | Not stated on the cited page | Not stated on the cited page | Sapphire | 100 m |
The CA7041-07X is the lowest listed price of the three, and the trade-off is its mineral crystal, which scratches more easily than sapphire. The CA0897-04H adds sapphire and a larger case at the middle price point. The Endeavor sits between them on price and also offers sapphire and 100 m water resistance.
Feature tiers change the answer
Comparing “Seiko” with “Citizen” hides large differences inside each brand. Citizen’s PCAT AT4133-09E adds atomic timekeeping and a perpetual calendar, and its listed water resistance is 200 m. That is a different feature tier from the CA0897-04H, so a buyer who wants atomic time or a perpetual calendar should compare references in that tier, not the two chronographs in this article. The same logic applies to Seiko: compare the exact reference you can buy, not the brand’s entire lineup.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Warranty and long-term running costs
Citizen states that its U.S. watches carry a five-year limited warranty. Confirm the terms and whether the specific watch is eligible, because limited warranties usually exclude certain damage. The cited Seiko sources do not establish a directly comparable U.S. warranty term, so check Seiko’s current U.S. warranty before buying a Seiko.
No independent comparison of reliability, repair frequency or service costs between these two brands is available from the sources cited here. Claims that one brand will last longer or cost less to keep running are not supported by that evidence, so judge each watch on its own stated terms.
Which to choose
Use these conditions to narrow the choice. Each one assumes you have confirmed the current local price for the exact reference.
- Seiko SSC961: a better fit if you want the smaller 39 mm case, published accuracy and reserve figures, and a curved sapphire crystal.
- Citizen CA0897-04H: a better fit if you want a larger 42 mm dial, sapphire crystal, a $575 listed U.S. price and Citizen’s stated five-year limited warranty.
- Citizen CA7041-07X: the budget option at $340 if a mineral crystal is acceptable to you.
- Citizen Endeavor CA4730-08E: a middle-price option at $476 with sapphire crystal and 100 m water resistance, though its movement and case size are not stated in the cited sources.
- Citizen PCAT AT4133-09E: only if atomic timekeeping and a perpetual calendar are worth a higher price to you.
Before you buy, confirm the current price for the exact reference in your market, try the case on your wrist, check the crystal and water-resistance rating against how you will wear the watch, and read the warranty terms for your country.
The comparison rests on manufacturer specifications and listing prices, not on hands-on testing or independent head-to-head trials. Within those limits, the Citizen CA0897-04H and the Seiko SSC961 are close in chronograph capacity and water-resistance class, and the decision comes down to size, crystal, published movement figures and the price you can verify.
