If you want a compact, light-powered Seiko panda-style chronograph, the Prospex Speedtimer SSC813 is the clearest starting point. Seiko’s current product page lists a 39.0 mm case, 13.3 mm thickness, the solar Caliber V192 movement, a curved sapphire crystal, 10 bar water resistance, and about six months of running after a full charge. If you want a mechanical chronograph instead, the choice is between the newer SRQ047 and the larger, limited-edition SRQ029, which uses the automatic Caliber 8R48. The rest of this guide explains where the two movement families differ and which model fits each situation.
What “panda” means on a Seiko chronograph
“Panda” is a nickname for a high-contrast dial layout: two black sub-dials set against a white dial. Seiko’s historical overview says fans applied the name to the original 1969-era Speedtimer for exactly that reason. The term describes the dial, not a movement or a model line, so a panda-style dial can sit on a solar watch or a mechanical one. Seiko’s 2023 press release for the SRQ047 describes its design as carrying cues from the 1972 creation, including the flowing case, the multi-row bracelet, a highly legible dial, and an orange-tipped chronograph seconds hand.
Seiko panda chronographs side by side
The four models below are the ones Seiko currently positions as panda-style chronographs. Where a value is not stated on the official pages reviewed for this guide, the table says so rather than estimating it.
| Model | Movement | Case diameter and thickness | Power and chronograph capacity | Dial, bezel and notable features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prospex Speedtimer SSC813 | Solar Caliber V192 | 39.0 mm diameter; 13.3 mm thickness (Seiko Watch Corporation product specification page, checked October 2026) | About six months when fully charged (Seiko specification); 60-minute chronograph; 24-hour hand; ±15 seconds per month (Seiko specification) | Sandblasted dial, curved sapphire crystal, 10 bar water resistance |
| Prospex Speedtimer SSC911 | Solar Caliber V192 | 41.4 mm diameter; thickness not stated in the official pages reviewed | About six months when fully charged (Seiko press release, October 11, 2022); 60-minute chronograph; 24-hour subdial | Red chronograph hands; two-tone aluminum tachymeter bezel |
| Prospex Speedtimer SRQ047 | Mechanical, from the 8R series according to Seiko’s Speedtimer collection page; specific caliber not confirmed for this reference | Not stated in the official pages reviewed | Not stated in the official pages reviewed | Panda-style dial, orange-tipped chronograph seconds hand, multi-row bracelet, design cues inherited from 1972 |
| Prospex SRQ029 | Automatic Caliber 8R48, also hand-windable | 41.0 mm diameter; 16.0 mm thickness (Seiko product specification page) | Approximately 45-hour power reserve; chronograph counters for 30 minutes and 12 hours | Historical panda treatment, sapphire crystal, 10 bar water resistance; limited edition of 1,000 pieces |
Read the table as a set of manufacturer figures. Two watches with the same movement family can still feel different on the wrist because of case diameter, thickness and bracelet, so the numbers narrow the choice without settling it.

Which Seiko panda chronograph should I buy?
Model choice follows from three questions: how much case size you can wear comfortably, whether you want a solar or mechanical movement, and how much the specific dial and bezel details matter to you.
Prospex Speedtimer SSC813: the compact solar choice
The SSC813 is the smallest model in this group and the one to start with if you want a modern panda chronograph at a modest size. Its 39.0 mm case is the reason many readers consider it first, and its 13.3 mm thickness is listed on Seiko’s product page. Its 60-minute chronograph and 24-hour hand cover the standard Speedtimer functions. Seiko specifies the V192 movement at ±15 seconds per month. The watch is solar, not automatic, so it does not depend on wrist motion to run.

Prospex Speedtimer SSC911: a larger solar alternative
The SSC911 keeps the V192 solar movement but moves up to a 41.4 mm case. Seiko’s October 11, 2022 release calls out its red chronograph hands and a two-tone aluminum tachymeter bezel, which make it more visually distinct than the SSC813. Choose it if you want the solar convenience and a case closer to a standard sports chronograph size. Seiko’s release describes all three watches in that launch as using the V192, and the same six-month reserve once fully charged.
Prospex Speedtimer SRQ047: the newer mechanical design
The SRQ047 is the mechanical option for readers who want the 1972-inspired look in a newer watch. Seiko’s November 21, 2023 press release presents the panda-style dial and orange-tipped chronograph seconds hand as the main visual inheritance. Seiko’s Speedtimer collection page places the mechanical models in the 8R series. The official pages reviewed for this guide did not give this reference’s case size, power reserve or chronograph capacity, so confirm those on the model-specific Seiko page for your region before buying.

Prospex SRQ029: the larger automatic limited edition
The SRQ029 is the most specified mechanical model in this group. Its 41.0 mm by 16.0 mm case is larger and thicker than the SSC813, and it runs Caliber 8R48, which is automatic with manual winding capability. Seiko’s specification lists about 45 hours of power reserve and chronograph counters for 30 minutes and 12 hours. The watch is a limited edition of 1,000 pieces, announced by Seiko with availability from December 2019. Limited-run status means stock is not guaranteed, so check current availability rather than assuming it is open to order.
What the two movements actually do
The choice between the solar and mechanical models is mostly a choice about how the watch is kept running. The two movements work differently, and each has trade-offs.

Solar Caliber V192
V192 is a solar movement. Seiko states that it runs for about six months after a full charge and includes a 60-minute chronograph, a 24-hour hand, a power reserve indicator and a date display. Because the charge comes from light, the practical routine is to keep the watch in a reasonably lit place. It does not require winding, and it does not need to be worn to keep running. The trade-off is that the watch depends on light for charging, so a long period in a dark drawer will drain the reserve over time.
Automatic Caliber 8R48
Caliber 8R48 is an automatic movement that can also be wound by hand. Seiko’s historical account describes the caliber as using a vertical clutch and column wheel, a traditional chronograph construction. The published reserve of about 45 hours means the watch will stop roughly two days after it is left unworn and unwound. Wearing it daily, or winding it by hand when needed, keeps it running. Seiko’s documentation of the 8R48 does not claim that a mechanical movement is more accurate or more durable than a solar one, and this guide does not make that claim either.

Solar or mechanical: a decision framework
- Choose solar if you want a watch that does not need daily wear or manual winding, you have regular access to light, and you prefer a smaller case (the SSC813) or a larger one with red chronograph hands (the SSC911).
- Choose mechanical if the movement itself is the reason for buying, you wear the watch regularly or are comfortable winding it, and you want a limited-edition model with a larger case (the SRQ029) or the newer 1972-inspired design (the SRQ047).
- Choose the SSC813 specifically if compact dimensions and a 60-minute chronograph matter most.
- Choose the SRQ047 specifically if you want a mechanical panda-style watch with the inherited 1972 dial cues, and you are prepared to check its full specifications on Seiko’s regional product page.
How to read the accuracy and reserve figures
The accuracy and power figures in this guide are Seiko’s own specifications, taken from its product pages and press releases checked in October 2026. This guide does not include wear testing, timing tests or any independent measurement of how these watches perform, so treat the numbers as the manufacturer’s claims. For the solar models, the six-month reserve applies only after a full charge. For the SRQ029, the 45-hour reserve applies after a full wind.
Prices and availability
Prices change by region and over time. During the October 2026 check, Seiko’s Middle East product page displayed USD 680 for the SSC813. That figure is region-specific and volatile, so it should not be read as a current US price. Seiko’s product pages were the only source for pricing, and the sources used for this guide do not establish a same-market price comparison across all four models. Confirm the price and stock for the exact reference on Seiko’s regional site before you buy, and treat the SRQ029’s limited-edition status as a reason to check stock first.
Before you buy: a checklist
- Confirm the exact reference number, because the SRQ and SSC families contain several variants with different dials and bracelets.
- Compare case diameter and thickness against your wrist size. The SSC813 is 39.0 mm, the SSC911 is 41.4 mm, and the SRQ029 is 41.0 mm by 16.0 mm.
- Decide whether you can keep a solar watch charged, or whether you will wear or wind a mechanical one regularly.
- Check the model’s official Seiko page for your region for current specifications, especially for the SRQ047, whose case and reserve figures were not established in the official pages reviewed here.
- Confirm the current price and availability on the official site, not from older listings.
If a model is out of stock or outside your budget, the other models in this guide cover the same core question of solar versus mechanical at different sizes.
