For most people who want an accurate chronograph that needs little attention day to day, quartz is the practical choice. Its recurring maintenance is battery replacement. A mechanical chronograph suits a buyer who values a spring-powered movement and accepts winding, more day-to-day rate variation, and periodic servicing. This is a comparison of movements, not a claim that every quartz watch is better built, more comfortable, or more durable than every mechanical one.
How each movement keeps time
Quartz: a battery, a crystal and electronics
A quartz watch runs on a battery and electronic components, including a quartz crystal and integrated circuitry. Citizen describes quartz watches as electrically powered, while mechanical watches are powered entirely by mechanical means (Citizen, “A Basic Understanding of Mechanical Watches”). That difference in power source is what drives every ownership difference discussed below.
Mechanical: a wound mainspring
A mechanical watch stores energy in a mainspring. In an automatic (self-winding) model, the movement of the wearer’s arm winds the mainspring. In a hand-wound model, the wearer winds it by turning the crown. Citizen’s maintenance guidance puts it this way: “self-winding” or “automatic” watches “use the movements of the wearer’s arm to wind the mainspring” (Citizen).
Accuracy uses different yardsticks
The two movement types are not rated the same way, so a simple “seconds gained per day” comparison is misleading. Seiko’s instructions state quartz accuracy as a monthly rate, and mechanical accuracy as a daily rate (Seiko, Instructions for Analogue Quartz and Mechanical Watches). Seiko’s calibre 9S86 manual makes the same distinction between quartz and mechanical rate conventions (Seiko, Grand Seiko mechanical watch instructions (calibre 9S86)).

| Measure | Quartz (Seiko analogue quartz calibres) | Mechanical (Seiko guidance) |
|---|---|---|
| How accuracy is stated | Monthly rate | “Mean daily rate,” which depends on the type of movement |
| Figure given in the manual | Less than 15 seconds per month; 20 seconds per month for some calibres | No single fixed figure given; the rate changes with use and conditions |
| Conditions attached to the figure | Covered calibres only, within a normal temperature range of 5°C to 35°C (manual year not stated) | Winding state, arm movement, temperature and resting position all affect the rate |
| How to judge it | Compare against the model’s own specification | Average the daily rates over a week or ten days of actual wear |
The quartz figures come from Seiko’s general analogue quartz instructions and apply to the calibres those instructions cover. They are not a guarantee for every quartz chronograph on the market (Seiko instructions).
For a mechanical watch, Seiko’s customer-service guidance explains that “the accuracy of mechanical watches changes slightly day by day, depending on the various conditions in which the watch is used or the outside environment” (Seiko, “What is the accuracy of mechanical watches?”). The practical implication is that a mechanical watch should be judged by its average over real wear, not by a single day’s reading. Seiko’s service-centre guidance lists the same environmental influences (Seiko, “Accuracy of Mechanical Watches”).

Ownership routine: battery versus winding and service
Ownership is where the two movements diverge most in daily life. The table below sets out the recurring tasks; the exact intervals depend on the model and the manufacturer’s manual.
| Routine | Quartz | Mechanical |
|---|---|---|
| Power source | Battery | Mainspring, wound by the arm (automatic) or by the crown (hand-wound) |
| Recurring task | Battery replacement when the battery expires | Regular winding; periodic overhaul or examination |
| Service interval stated by maker | Not stated in the cited Seiko quartz instructions | Citizen: 2–3 years for a watch used every day; Seiko: examination about every three years |
| Who should do the work | An authorized dealer, using a genuine Seiko battery (Seiko quartz instructions) | Manufacturer service centre or authorized service (Seiko and Citizen guidance) |
Quartz: battery replacement
Seiko warns that a factory-installed battery may have less life remaining than its specified duration, and recommends replacing an expired battery promptly. Owners of covered watches are directed to an authorized dealer and a genuine Seiko battery (Seiko instructions). Battery type must match the exact calibre, so use the model’s manual rather than a generic battery chart. The same instructions call for checking water resistance after the case has been opened for battery work, so the battery change should be treated as a small service task rather than a five-minute swap.

Mechanical: winding and servicing
Seiko recommends winding a mechanical watch at a consistent time of day. It also says that more than eight hours of daily wear can help a self-winding watch keep enough mainspring energy (Seiko, “What should I do for better accuracy?”). Citizen cautions against winding the crown forcefully and notes that low arm movement can leave an automatic insufficiently wound. It recommends regular overhauls, suggesting 2–3 years for a watch worn every day (Citizen). Seiko’s separate recommendation is an examination about every three years (Seiko). These are maker recommendations, and a specific model’s manual takes precedence.

- Worn most days, and you want it to be right without thinking about it: quartz. You change a battery periodically and reset the time rarely.
- Worn daily, and you enjoy winding and the mechanism: a mechanical automatic works well if you wear it for more than about eight hours a day, as Seiko’s guidance suggests for self-winding models. Accept that the rate will vary and that you will judge it over a week or more.
- Worn occasionally, rotating through a collection: quartz is the lower-effort choice. An automatic left unworn can stop, and it will need winding and setting again before it runs correctly.
- Hand-wound mechanical: suits owners who want a daily winding ritual and are comfortable with that routine as part of ownership.
Chronograph-specific caveats
Movement type alone does not tell you how the chronograph function performs. The sources reviewed for this article do not establish a universal difference between quartz and mechanical chronographs in timer performance, case comfort, water resistance or shock rating. Those traits depend on the exact model, so check the manual and specification sheet for the watch you are considering rather than inferring them from the movement.
Magnetism, shock and sport
Mechanical movements are more sensitive to strong magnetism, shock, temperature and resting position. Citizen advises keeping mechanical watches at least 5 cm from objects that generate magnetic fields, and removing the watch before sports likely to jar the wrist (Citizen; see also Seiko). Follow the exact manual for any limits that apply to your model. Quartz movements are not immune to magnetism, but the cited sources do not address that for specific models, so do not treat this as a complete comparison.
