Seiko’s 2017 launch specifications give it a 50-hour power reserve and 5 bar water resistance. In his November 2017 hands-on review, Felix Scholz praised the dial and distinctive shape but found the printed border around the date window less refined. Those are historical specifications and one reviewer’s impressions—not a current condition check, accuracy test or confirmation of availability.
What makes the SPB049J distinctive?
The SPB049J is a traditional time-and-date watch, but its barrel-shaped case sets it apart from the more familiar round Presage designs. Its white enamel dial carries black Roman numerals, blued leaf-shaped hands and a date aperture. The combination leans on classical watchmaking cues without making the case itself conventional.
Seiko introduced its Presage Enamel Collection in an announcement dated 10 February 2017, describing it as a permanent part of the Presage line and saying it would be available worldwide from September 2017. Seiko linked the collection’s design to its 1913 Laurel wristwatch and to the Roman numeral markers of the 1895 Time Keeper pocket watch. That is Seiko’s heritage framing for the collection, rather than a claim that the SPB049 reproduces either earlier watch. Seiko’s 2017 collection announcement
How is the enamel dial made?
Seiko says master craftsman Mitsuru Yokozawa and his team made the collection’s enamel dials. The company describes adjusting the enamel thickness to suit different parts of the dial and the atmospheric conditions during manufacture. Its craftsmanship page says Yokozawa can apply a flawless enamel coat just 0.1 mm thin, and describes the dial’s finish as having a “unique, soft sheen.” These are Seiko’s descriptions of the craft and process; they are not an independent examination of every SPB049 dial. Enamel is central to the SPB049’s character: it provides a different visual surface from a conventional printed dial, while the Roman numerals and leaf hands reinforce the formal styling. The precise appearance of an individual watch can depend on its condition; the launch description alone does not establish the state of a particular example.

What did the hands-on review find?
Felix Scholz’s review for Time+Tide, published 13 November 2017, highlights details that are easy to miss in a specification list. He praised the dial’s lustre, the crisp black printed Roman numerals and the blued leaf-shaped hands. He also noted the seconds hand’s crescent-moon-shaped counterweight. Scholz’s positive response to the unusual case was balanced by a specific criticism: he found the printed square around the date aperture roughly finished at the edges and visually at odds with the case’s curves. Scholz described the watch as 46 mm lug-to-lug, 35.9 mm across and 12.5 mm thick, and said it did not sit too high on his wrist. Seiko’s announcement instead labels the 46.0 mm dimension vertical. The numbers describe the same listed model dimensions with different terminology; neither a measurement nor one reviewer’s wrist impression predicts how the watch will fit another person.
How does it compare with the round SPB047?
Seiko’s launch announcement lists the SPB047 as the round counterpart in the same enamel collection, also using caliber 6R15. The dimensions and water-resistance ratings make the clearest specification-level contrast; personal preference and wrist fit remain individual.
| Launch specification | SPB049 | SPB047 |

| Case shape | Tonneau / barrel | Round |
| Movement | Automatic caliber 6R15 | Automatic caliber 6R15 |

The 5 bar and 10 bar figures are the ratings Seiko published for these models. They are not a recommendation for a particular activity, and this comparison does not establish that either watch is universally preferable.

What the published record does—and does not—tell you
Seiko’s announcement listed an approximate European recommended retail price of €1,300. Time+Tide listed Australian pricing of $2,150 on an alligator strap in its 2017 review. These are launch-era and review-era prices from different markets, not comparable current quotations. They do not establish today’s asking price, resale range or availability.
The available review records one reviewer’s visual and fit impressions, not a controlled performance test. It does not establish measured accuracy for the 6R15, nor does the published specification establish the condition, service history or originality of a particular SPB049J. Anyone assessing a specific example will need information about that watch rather than relying on the model’s original launch listing.
