The Seiko Presage SPB161’s distinctive dial takes its cues from Japanese designer Riki Watanabe’s 1977 RIKI STEEL CLOCK. Its high-contrast black markers, blue hands and white enamel surface bring that legibility-focused design to a wristwatch, while date and power-reserve displays add practical information. It was covered as a new design in 2020; it is not a new release in 2026.
What inspired the SPB161 dial?
Time+Tide’s 2020 hands-on review identifies Watanabe’s RIKI STEEL CLOCK, designed in 1977, as the source of the dial concept. The review connects the clock’s pronounced hour markers and spade-tipped hour hand to the SPB161’s design. This is an adaptation rather than a literal reproduction: Seiko sets those cues into a wristwatch layout with additional calendar and power-reserve indications.
How the dial balances legibility and information
The watch pairs a crisp white enamel dial with black baton hour markers and five blued hands, according to Time+Tide. The contrast makes the main time display visually distinct, while the blue hands add color without changing the dial’s restrained palette. The review credits master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa with producing the enamel dial.
Date and power reserve
The 6R27 movement drives a date sub-dial and a power-reserve indicator. These displays add information to the otherwise uncluttered face; they are part of the same dial rather than separate complications on the case.

Time+Tide reported an Australian recommended retail price of A$1,995 in its 2020 launch coverage and said boutique and online availability was expected in the coming months. Seiko Philippines’ product page, accessed on 8 October 2026, displayed ₱81,440 and a limited-stock notice. These are different regional and temporal snapshots, not a like-for-like current global price comparison; check local authorized retailers for present availability and pricing.

The official Philippines listing identifies the watch as reference SPB161J1. Its stated 20 mm lug distance can help when considering a replacement strap, but check strap fit and clasp compatibility before buying.
