It pairs that craft-focused dial with Seiko’s 6R27 automatic movement, a 40.6 mm stainless-steel case and blue details inspired by the reflection of the moon on water.
What makes the SPB171 distinctive?
The SPB171 is a Presage watch whose defining feature is its genuine Arita porcelain dial. Seiko describes the edition as limited to 2,000 pieces, with each watch’s serial number engraved on the case back. The reference is also written SPB171J1 on Seiko’s product pages.
Arita, a town on Kyushu, has a porcelain-making history dating to the early 17th century. Seiko says the SPB171’s dials were developed by master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi and his colleagues together with the Presage team, working with an Arita manufacturer that has made porcelain since 1830. How is its Arita porcelain dial made?
Seiko describes a multi-stage process that includes molding and several firings at high temperature. The porcelain is specially formulated for watch-dial use to make it harder and more durable than traditional porcelain, while the mold must meet precise dimensions. Seiko’s product page characterizes the dial as handmade and fired at high temperature.

Small dimples, dots and variations in color can occur during production. Seiko identifies these as features of genuine Arita porcelain and says no two dials are exactly alike; they are evidence of the material’s individual character, not necessarily a defect. For an individual secondhand watch, condition still needs to be assessed separately.
What do the dial and design represent?
The dial is white Hakuji porcelain with a clear transparent glaze that lets the porcelain’s natural whiteness show through. Blue hands, hour markers and subdials provide contrast. Seiko connects the composition to Suigetsu, the Japanese aesthetic of the moon’s reflection on water. Crescent-moon motifs appear in the power-reserve indicator and seconds hand, and the blue-toned crocodile-leather strap extends the water-and-moonlight theme.

These are the specifications Seiko lists for the model on its SPB171J1 product page. The 10-bar rating is the published specification; it does not establish the condition or water resistance of a particular pre-owned example.
What to know about fit and ownership
The 40.6 mm diameter gives the case a clear wrist presence, while its 48.8 mm lug-to-lug measurement is useful when judging how far it may span across the wrist. At 14.1 mm thick, it is not a particularly slim case. These dimensions are more informative than diameter alone when assessing fit.

The specified lug distance is 20 mm, so a replacement strap needs that width at the lugs. Width alone does not guarantee compatibility: check the strap’s end shape, thickness, material and clasp arrangement before buying.

The Malaysian regional model page displays MYR 7,900; that is a regional page price, not a verified current resale value or a global price. Availability, condition and asking prices can vary by seller and market, so confirm the exact reference, serial engraving and condition with the seller before purchasing.
The SPB171 should not be confused with a later or similarly named Presage Arita-dial reference: specifications and availability for another reference do not automatically apply to this model.
