Its white Hakuji dial, blue details and moon-on-water inspiration set it apart, while the 6R27 movement and 40.6 mm case make it a full-featured mechanical watch rather than simply a showcase for porcelain.
What Seiko launched in 2020
On June 9, 2020, Seiko announced the Presage Arita Porcelain Dial Limited Edition, reference SPB171, with availability from June and an announced production limit of 2,000 watches. Seiko’s product page styles it SPB171J1 and identifies its limited-edition serial numbering. The announcement supports describing SPB171 as the verified 2020 Presage artisanal-dial release; it does not establish a new enamel model launched alongside it. Seiko’s June 9, 2020 launch announcement and the official SPB171J1 product page give the model details.
Why the dial is called Arita porcelain
The dial is made from Arita porcelain, a Japanese ceramic tradition. Seiko calls this white porcelain Hakuji and links the design to Suigetsu, the appreciation of the moon reflected in water. The pale dial and blue hands, markers and sub-dials are intended to evoke that contrast. Seiko describes the transparent glaze as allowing the porcelain’s natural whiteness to show through.
Seiko says master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi and colleagues at an experienced Arita manufacturer made the dial. According to the company’s 2020 announcement, the manufacturer had made porcelain since 1830. The process includes several firing phases and a precision casting mold; Seiko says the porcelain formulation is harder and more durable than traditional porcelain to suit wristwatch use. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent durability-test results.

How porcelain differs from Seiko’s Shippo enamel
Seiko’s Presage Shippo enamel watches are relevant history, not a second confirmed 2020 launch. In March 2018, Seiko announced Shippo enamel models SPB073 and SPB075. Its description distinguishes Shippo from porcelain enamel by the enamel’s transparency and the way it is polished after firing. Seiko credited Nagoya specialist Ando Cloisonne with making those dials and named craftsman Wataru Totani, who hand-painted the glaze. Read the March 22, 2018 Shippo enamel announcement for that earlier release.
In practical terms, SPB171’s defining material is fired Arita porcelain with a transparent glaze; the earlier Shippo models use enamel. The available official announcements establish different materials, makers and release dates, but do not provide a matched 2020 enamel-versus-porcelain model comparison. Seiko Philippines’ regional store currently presents enamel as part of the broader Presage Craftsmanship category and lists SPB173J1, but that regional lineup does not establish a 2020 launch pairing with SPB171. Seiko Philippines’ Presage Craftsmanship collection reflects that store’s regional listings, which can change.

Do not confuse it with the 2020 Sharp Edged Series
Seiko announced the Sharp Edged Series on August 24, 2020 as a separate Presage line: SPB165, SPB167, SPB169 and SPB170. Those models have geometric Asanoha, or hemp-leaf, patterned dials, not Arita porcelain. They use caliber 6R35, with a 70-hour power reserve, and have a 39.3 mm diameter and 11.1 mm thickness. Seiko’s announcement listed 10 bar water resistance and an approximate European recommended retail price of €990. The three steel-bracelet models have a super-hard coating; SPB170 has rose-gold-color plating and a horse strap. These are a distinct design and movement proposition from SPB171. See Seiko’s August 24, 2020 Sharp Edged Series announcement for the full release details.
