Seiko announced the 40.6 mm watch in June 2025 as a 1,200-piece limited edition, with availability planned from July 2025. Its defining feature is the dial: a warm, matte-white surface with a rhombus pattern, made through a porcelain process Seiko adapted for wristwatch use.
What makes the SPB497’s dial different?
Most Arita porcelain is glazed. Seiko instead presents the SPB497’s dial unglazed, giving it a matte appearance and a tactile-looking hishi, or rhombus, pattern. Gold-colored hands and indexes stand out against the white dial. Seiko describes the motif as a modern interpretation of a traditional pattern and associates it with good fortune, longevity and protection from illness.
Seiko says the dial is precision-cast in a gypsum mold and fired at 1,300°C. The company says it developed the material and production process to meet the durability needs of a wristwatch, and describes the resulting porcelain as more than four times stronger than conventional porcelain. Those strength and process details are Seiko’s claims; they are not independent test findings.
How the Arita craft enters the watch
Seiko describes Arita porcelain as Japan’s first porcelain, created in the early 17th century, with the craft passed down for more than 400 years. The company credits master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi, affiliated with the Shin-Kama kiln in Arita, Saga Prefecture, with supervising the unglazed dial. Kiln team leader Toshiaki Kawaguchi and other Arita artisans also contributed.

- Seiko Presage Cocktail Time U.S. Special Creation
- Special creation celebrating craft beer cocktails
- Fine mechanical watchmaking from Japan
- Automatic with manual winding capability
- Inspired by the Beer Julep cocktail, the gloss-finish gold dial is vertically gradated to suggest the sparkling hues of a fresh pour, while the pressed pattern evokes its bubbling effervescence
The watch’s appeal therefore rests on more than an unusual dial color: its surface and pattern connect a contemporary wristwatch to a named porcelain tradition and the craftspeople involved in its production.

Who should consider the SPB497?
The SPB497 is most compelling for someone drawn to its porcelain dial and the craft story behind it, rather than someone choosing solely by movement specifications. The 40.6 mm case, automatic-and-manual-winding 6R51 movement and stated 72-hour reserve give the unusual dial a conventional mechanical-watch foundation. Its 10-bar water resistance is a useful everyday specification, but the defining distinction remains the unglazed Arita porcelain surface.
