Officially listed as reference SJE085 (with SJE085J1 used as the SKU form), it pairs the original Alpinist’s glossy black dial and mountain-shaped markers with a compact 36.6 mm case, modern 10-bar water resistance and Seiko’s 6L35 movement. It was announced for August 2021; its approximately $2,900 US recommended price was a launch figure, not a current price quote.
What is the Seiko SJE085J1?
The SJE085 is Seiko’s limited re-creation of the Laurel Alpinist, first introduced in 1959. Seiko described that original as a watch for mountain climbers and recreational field-sports enthusiasts, and as its first watch produced with sports in mind. The company announced the re-creation in February 2021 as a 1,959-piece edition, with availability planned for August through Seiko boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide. Seiko’s 2021 announcement gives the historical context and launch details.
Seiko’s official specification page uses the reference SJE085; SJE085J1 is the SKU form seen in the title and product imagery. The distinction is useful when searching listings, but both forms refer to the same limited re-creation. Seiko’s model page lists its current official specifications.
How does it connect to the 1959 Laurel Alpinist?
The original combined a screw-back case and leather cuff band with luminous hands and markers. Its mountain-shaped hour markers at 3, 6, 9 and 12 are the defining visual cue carried forward by the SJE085. The re-creation also retains the glossy black dial, large luminous markers and hands, and an inner white minute track. Seiko’s box-shaped sapphire crystal gives the modern watch a profile intended to recall the domed glass of the earlier design.
It is a re-creation rather than a literal reproduction. The SJE085 adds a date window between 4 and 5 o’clock, a 10-bar water-resistance rating and the modern Caliber 6L35. Seiko says the case is only 1.0 mm thicker than the original despite the date display and enhanced performance. The company’s release describes those design changes.

How the SJE085 differs from SPB241, SPB243 and SPB245
Seiko introduced the SPB241, SPB243 and SPB245 alongside the limited re-creation. Those serial-production watches are modern reinterpretations of the Alpinist, not variants of the SJE085. The differences are substantial enough that the choice is not simply a matter of dial color: the SJE085 is smaller, uses a different movement and crystal, and has a lower water-resistance rating.
| Model | Case | Movement and reserve | Crystal / water resistance | Dial and date | Band | Edition and US launch price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SJE085 | 36.6 mm; 11.1 mm thick; 43.8 mm lug-to-lug | 6L35; approximately 45 hours | Box-shaped sapphire; 10 bar | Glossy black dial with mountain-shaped markers; date between 4 and 5 | Cow leather; 18 mm lug spacing | Limited to 1,959; approximately $2,900 US recommended price at 2021 launch |

What did the SJE085 cost at launch?
Seiko’s approximate US recommended retail price was $2,900 when it announced the watch in 2021. Monochrome reported €3,000 including tax or $2,900 excluding tax at launch; those figures describe launch pricing, not today’s market. Monochrome’s 2021 coverage provides that additional launch-price context.
Neither the launch price nor the edition size establishes a current asking price, resale value or availability. Those depend on region, seller, condition and timing; the available sources do not establish current inventory or completed-sale prices.

Who is the SJE085 for?
The SJE085 is the closer fit for someone who wants the 1959-inspired proportions and details in a compact case, and values a limited edition over serial production. Its 36.6 mm diameter and 43.8 mm lug-to-lug measurement are particularly relevant to fit; the SPB trio’s case diameter is 38.0 mm. The SPB models instead offer a 70-hour power reserve and 20-bar rating, along with their own updated design and bracelet or strap configurations. Those differences are more useful to compare than treating either group as a direct replacement for the other.
Seiko specifies 18 mm lug spacing for the SJE085, which identifies the nominal strap width but does not by itself confirm the fit of every replacement strap. Check the attachment and end-fit details of any strap before buying.
