The Seiko Prospex SLA037J1 is a premium, limited-edition re-creation of Seiko’s first diver design—not a reissue of the original 1965 watch. It pairs the vintage-inspired design with a modern 39.9 mm case, 200 m water resistance and Seiko’s high-beat 8L55 automatic movement. Its launch price was approximately $6,300 in the US in 2020; that historical figure does not establish what the watch costs or is worth today.
What the SLA037J1 represents
Seiko introduced the SLA037 as one of three limited Prospex models marking 55 years of the company’s diver’s watches. It represents the 1965 design, which Seiko identifies as its first diver’s watch and Japan’s first diver’s watch. The other anniversary models revisited Seiko designs from 1968 and 1975. Seiko’s March 5, 2020 announcement describes the trilogy as a return to designs from the company’s first decade making diver’s watches.
The SLA037 follows the original’s visual direction while changing its materials and specifications. Seiko says the re-creation’s case diameter is 1.9 mm larger than the original’s. The anniversary feature also identifies a box-shaped sapphire crystal, 200 m water resistance and a super-hard coating among the modern updates. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent assessments of build quality or performance.

These are Seiko’s published specifications, not a guarantee of how the watch will fit a particular wrist. The 47.9 mm lug-to-lug measurement is useful alongside the diameter when considering fit, while the 14.7 mm thickness may affect how the watch sits beneath a cuff. Anyone considering a replacement band should start with the listed 19 mm lug width and confirm the fit of the specific strap.

Movement and stated performance
The SLA037J1 uses Seiko caliber 8L55, an automatic movement with manual winding. Seiko specifies a power reserve of approximately 55 hours, 37 jewels, a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour and precision of +15 to -10 seconds per day. These are the manufacturer’s stated specifications; they are not results from an independent timing test of an individual watch.
Water resistance: original versus re-creation
Seiko states that the original 1965 watch had 150 m water resistance. The modern SLA037 is rated to 200 m / 660 ft, a distinct specification for the re-creation. Seiko also says the original was used by members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition from 1966 to 1969. That historical account concerns the original model, not a test or expedition record for the SLA037.

Edition size and launch price
Seiko announced the anniversary re-creations as limited to 1,100 pieces each. In its March 2020 US announcement, the company said the SLA037 would be available in June 2020 at an approximate US recommended retail price of $6,300. That is a launch-era US price, not a current listing, resale estimate or claim about present availability. The regional product page’s displayed price is in Singapore dollars and is not directly comparable without matching dates and exchange rates.

Who the SLA037J1 suits
The SLA037 is most relevant to a buyer who wants Seiko’s 1965 diver design in a premium modern execution and values the particular combination of a high-beat automatic movement, sapphire crystal, steel case and limited production. The published dimensions provide a concrete starting point for evaluating fit, but wrist comfort and proportions cannot be established from specifications alone.
It is less straightforward to assess as a value purchase from the available facts: the launch price is historical, and no current market price, resale premium or independent performance testing is established here. Before buying, verify the specific watch’s condition, seller and current asking price rather than treating the 2020 recommended retail price or limited-edition count as evidence of today’s value.
