As of October 8, 2026, Konstantin Chaykin says its 1.65 mm ThinKing Mystery holds the record for the thinnest mechanical wristwatch. Bulgari’s 1.70 mm Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC remains notable in a narrower category, while Piaget’s 2024 Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon measures 2 mm by the maker’s stated caseback-to-crystal measurement.
What counts as the world’s thinnest watch?
Before comparing millimeters, identify what each claim measures and which category it covers. “Thinnest” may describe a complete mechanical wristwatch, a watch with a particular complication, or a certified chronometer. A record in one category does not automatically displace a record in another.

For the current overall mechanical-wristwatch claim, Chaykin’s official 2026 announcement says the ThinKing Mystery is 1.65 mm thick and “still holds the world record for the thinnest mechanical wristwatch.” That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independently verified comparative test. The same announcement says the watch was shortlisted for the 2026 GPHG Mechanical Exception category; as of October 8, 2026, the award result was still pending, with the ceremony scheduled for November 7.

How watchmakers make a mechanical watch so thin
Reducing thickness is an architectural problem, not simply a matter of shaving material from an ordinary case. The movement, case, display and winding system must be arranged to fit within a very small vertical envelope while still functioning as a watch.
ThinKing: make the case part of the movement
Chaykin describes integrating the ThinKing movement into the case and using the caseback as the mainplate. That lets the structure do double duty instead of stacking a conventional movement inside a separate case. The ThinKing Mystery page also describes a two-level gear train and a mystery display that uses transparent indicators. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of its design.

Winding and protection become design constraints
A watch only 1.65 mm thick leaves little room for conventional winding hardware and protective structures. Chaykin’s original prototype material describes winding with a special key or placing the watch in an external carrier case called PalanKing. The current ThinKing Mystery specification lists key winding. The carrier is therefore a practical response to the prototype’s extreme thinness, not evidence that the watch itself has a thicker stated profile.
Thinness does not erase other engineering goals
The Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC makes a different point: FH says the 1.70 mm watch is resistant to shocks and magnetic fields as well as being the thinnest COSC-certified chronometer. That certification and resistance claim are part of its distinction; its 2024 category-specific record should not be confused with Chaykin’s later overall mechanical-wristwatch claim.

How the three milestones differ
Konstantin Chaykin ThinKing Mystery: 1.65 mm, 2026
Chaykin’s current product page describes the ThinKing Mystery as 1.65 mm thick, with a 38-hour power reserve, key winding and a 12-piece limited edition. The page says allocation approval is determined following a closed review process. This is a collector-oriented release rather than an ordinary retail purchase. The announcement also identifies its 2026 GPHG shortlist status; the outcome was not yet known on October 8, 2026.
Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC: 1.70 mm, 2024
FH’s May 16, 2024 report gives the Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC a thickness of 1.70 mm and says it is limited to 20 pieces. FH describes it as the thinnest COSC-certified chronometer and says the watch resists shocks and magnetic fields. Those qualifications matter: the COSC claim is a specific certification category, rather than a general assertion that the model is the thinnest watch of any kind.

Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon: 2 mm, 2024
Piaget states that the Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon measures 2 mm from the caseback to the top of the crystal. It is a tourbillon model, and the measurement is explicitly a caseback-to-crystal profile. Piaget presented it for the maison’s 150th anniversary. Its stated thickness and complication make it a useful milestone in the contest, but not a direct substitute for the other watches’ differently framed records.

Chaykin’s 2024 ThinKing was described by its maker as a working prototype, not a watch ready for series production. In the prototype discussion, the manufacturer says the answer is in the name: it was working, but not ready to enter series production. A later final prototype was sold at Phillips’ Geneva Watch Auction XIX on May 10, 2025, according to Chaykin. The present ThinKing Mystery is a subsequent 12-piece limited edition, not evidence that the 2024 prototype was already a mass-market product.

For interested collectors, the practical distinction is between a prototype with an auction history and a current edition whose allocation is controlled by the maker. The cited sources establish those statuses, but do not establish ordinary retail availability or a public price.
Why the record depends on the category
- Overall mechanical wristwatch: Chaykin’s 2026 manufacturer claim gives the ThinKing Mystery the 1.65 mm record.
- COSC-certified chronometer: FH’s 2024 report identifies Bulgari’s 1.70 mm Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC in this category.
- Tourbillon profile: Piaget gives the Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon a 2 mm measurement from caseback to crystal.
- Development status: Chaykin’s 2024 working prototype, its 2025 auctioned final prototype and the 2026 12-piece Mystery edition are distinct stages, not interchangeable descriptions.
The useful way to read any new ultra-thin-watch headline is to keep the model, date, measurement and category together. A millimeter figure without those details can make genuinely different achievements look like a single, settled race.
