The Seiko Prospex SPB051 and SPB053 are two 2017 reinterpretations of Seiko’s first diver, the 1965 model often associated with the 62MAS name. Their published movement, case dimensions and performance specifications are the same; the practical distinction is the supplied band: a steel bracelet on the SPB051 and a silicone strap on the SPB053. Seiko announced approximate European launch-era prices of €1,100 and €900, respectively—historical 2017 prices, not current market quotes.
SPB051 vs. SPB053: what is different?
Seiko’s 23 March 2017 announcement introduced both references as contemporary reinterpretations honoring its 1965 diver. The SPB051 came on a stainless-steel bracelet, while the SPB053 came on a silicone strap. Seiko listed the same core specifications for both.

The price figures are Seiko’s approximate European recommended retail prices at announcement, not current prices or evidence of resale value. The band may guide the choice, but it does not by itself establish which reference will feel better on a particular wrist.
Shared movement and specifications
Both watches use Seiko’s automatic Caliber 6R15, specified at 21,600 vibrations per hour, with a 50-hour power reserve and 23 jewels. Seiko’s announcement lists the following shared construction and performance details:

How the 1965 diver connection fits
Seiko’s announcement dated 23 March 2017 describes the SPB051 and SPB053 as modern reinterpretations of its first diver, released in 1965. The company said the new watches echoed the original’s design while updating its functions and meeting Seiko’s standards for diver’s watches. That is the manufacturer’s characterization of the lineage, rather than an independent assessment.

2017 launch timing and price context
Seiko said the SPB051 and SPB053 would be available in November 2017. Its approximate European recommended retail prices at announcement were €1,100 for the SPB051 and €900 for the SPB053. Those figures describe the original launch pricing only; the announcement does not establish current retailer availability, present-day price, or secondhand value.
For current listings, verify the exact reference, seller, condition and asking price. The announcement also does not give replacement-strap part numbers or establish strap compatibility, so check model-specific fit information before buying an alternative band.
