The Seiko Prospex SPB189 pairs a black dial with sharply shaped hands and a warm metallic-brown bezel insert. Despite the insert’s appearance, it is titanium—not ceramic. Seiko lists the SPB189 as a 200 m diver with a titanium case and bezel, a 6R35 automatic movement and an approximately 70-hour power reserve.
What gives the SPB189 its distinctive look?
In a November 11, 2020 review, Fratello’s Rob Nudds described the watch as having “sharp, highly-legible hands” and a “warm, contrasting bezel insert.” He identifies the insert and seconds hand as bronze-colored titanium, giving them a metallic-brown appearance against the black dial and the rest of the watch’s titanium exterior. Those are the reviewer’s visual observations, not a measured legibility or lume test.
Nudds also noted the sharply defined dial indices and bezel markings, angled bezel knurling and brushed, precisely machined lugs. The warm-colored insert and seconds hand provide the main color contrast; the angular details give the design its crisp character.
Is the SPB189 bezel ceramic or titanium?
It is titanium. Fratello updated its review after further communication with Seiko, clarifying that the insert had previously been described incorrectly as ceramic. The watch’s colored insert may resemble other materials, but the correction identifies it as titanium. Seiko’s product page separately lists a titanium bezel.

What to consider when comparing it with the SPB185
Nudds compares the SPB189 with the SPB185, describing the latter as smaller and made of stainless steel. He says he personally preferred the SPB185, a matter of taste rather than a general buying verdict. The review does not establish a complete performance comparison between the two models.
For a useful comparison, check the dimensions, case and bezel materials, movement, price and availability for your own market, then decide which design you prefer. Seiko’s UK page supplies the SPB189 specifications above; the review’s size and material comments about the SPB185 are not a substitute for checking that model’s current regional specification.
