Both share a 43.5 mm case, Seiko’s 6R35 automatic movement and a stated 200 m diver’s water-resistance rating. “Shogun” is the familiar enthusiast nickname used in the 2020 hands-on coverage, not the official model name.
What separates the SPB189J1 and SPB191J1?
The practical choice is mainly about dial, supplied band and the feel of those bands on the wrist. Seiko’s product specifications list the SPB189J1 at 121.0 g and the SPB191J1 at 99.0 g. The lighter listed weight of the SPB191 comes with its silicone band; the SPB189’s figure is for its titanium bracelet configuration.
| Reference | Dial | Supplied band | Listed weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPB189J1 | Black | Titanium bracelet | 121.0 g (Seiko specification) |
| SPB191J1 | White | Silicone band | 99.0 g (Seiko specification) |
Choose the SPB189 if you want the black-dial look and a metal bracelet as supplied. The SPB191 is the natural fit if you prefer a white dial and flexible silicone band. The watches have the same published case dimensions and core specifications, so the choice is not between two different movements or case sizes.
How do they wear for watches this size?
Both have a 43.5 mm case diameter, 51.0 mm lug-to-lug length and 13.3 mm thickness, with 22 mm lug width. Those numbers describe a substantial watch on paper. In his November 25, 2020 hands-on article for Time+Tide, Thor Svaboe wrote that “What sticks in your mind after trying it on is how preconceived the very notion of size is.” That is his personal wear impression, not a measured fit result; wrist shape and band choice can change how a large case feels.
#1 Best Overall
- WATER-RESISTANT: these water-resistant men's dive watches are ISO scuba-approved to depths of 200 meters
- AUTOMATIC: these self-winding, automatic men's watches are powered by your movement, with a power reserve of 41 hours
- STAINLESS STEEL: features a durable 43.8mm stainless steel watch case and bracelet.
- LUMIBRITE DISPLAY: this men's automatic watch features a highly-legible display with LumiBrite hands and markers
- 4R35 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable caliber 4R35 automatic movement, this accurate men's watch keeps precise time
The titanium construction and listed weights help explain why the watches may feel less burdensome than their dimensions suggest. The bracelet SPB189 is still the heavier of the pair by Seiko’s figures, while the silicone-band SPB191 is lighter. Neither weight alone establishes comfort for every wearer.
What do both watches have in common?
Movement and functions
Seiko specifies its 6R35 automatic movement, with manual winding, a date display and stop-second function. The stated power reserve is approximately 70 hours; the manufacturer’s stated precision is +25 to -15 seconds per day. These are published specifications, not results from independent timekeeping tests.

Case, crystal and diver’s specification
Both models have a titanium case with super-hard coating and a titanium bezel. Seiko lists a sapphire crystal with magnifier and inner anti-reflective coating. Shared features include a unidirectional rotating bezel, screw-down crown, screw case back and LumiBrite on the hands, indices and bezel. Both are rated by Seiko for 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance; that manufacturer rating should not be treated as a guarantee of suitability for every dive profile.
What was new about the 2020 Shogun versions?
The original “new Shogun” framing belongs to the watches’ launch period, not to 2026. Time+Tide’s November 2020 hands-on focused particularly on the changed dials; Svaboe summarized that shift by writing, “The biggest change here are the dials.” The review also gives favorable subjective impressions of the finishing, legibility and lightness. It does not establish controlled tests of timekeeping, durability or underwater performance.

Monochrome Watches reported retailer availability from November 2020 and launch prices of EUR 1,550 for the SPB189J1 and EUR 1,350 for the SPB191J1. These are historical euro launch figures, not current or universal prices. Seiko’s linked product pages currently display different regional listings: GBP 1,410 on the UK SPB189J1 page and USD 1,300 on the Middle East SPB191J1 page. Because they concern different references and markets, they are not a like-for-like price comparison; availability and local pricing should be checked with retailers in the buyer’s region.

- Pick the SPB189J1 if you want a black dial and titanium bracelet straight from the box.
- Pick the SPB191J1 if you prefer a white dial, silicone band and lower manufacturer-listed weight.
- Compare local stock and price before buying: the historical launch prices and current regional product-page prices are not interchangeable.
For either model, the shared 22 mm lug width is useful when considering other bands, but it does not by itself confirm the fit of a particular aftermarket strap, clasp or end link.
