It is a modern solar-quartz Speedtimer whose colorway is associated with the “Pogue” nickname; Seiko lists it as a V192-powered watch inspired by the company’s Speedtimer heritage.
Seiko’s U.S. product page lists the SSC947 at $750. Its published specifications include a 41.4 mm steel case, curved sapphire crystal, 10 bar water resistance, and a chronograph that measures up to 60 minutes in 1/5-second increments.
What is the Seiko SSC947?
The SSC947 is a specific reference in Seiko’s Prospex Speedtimer collection. Seiko identifies it as a solar chronograph with caliber V192. “Pogue” is not its official model name in the Seiko material reviewed here, and the available official sources do not establish the nickname’s precise provenance for this reference.
Seiko describes its modern V192 solar chronographs as inspired by the 1969 Speedtimer. That is heritage inspiration, not evidence that the SSC947 is the original historical watch or a mechanical reproduction of it.

What does “Pogue” mean here?
The article’s “Pogue” label refers to the yellow-and-blue colorway association, not an official Seiko reference name established in the sources reviewed. Those sources do not verify the specific historical watch worn by astronaut William Pogue or establish a direct historical link between that watch and the SSC947. Treat the nickname as an enthusiast label rather than a claim that this is the original space-flown watch.

Seiko’s official Speedtimer history says it introduced the Speedtimer with Caliber 6139 in 1969. Seiko describes the modern V192 solar chronographs as inspired by that heritage. The SSC947 therefore connects to the Speedtimer story through design inspiration, while using a different movement: V192 solar quartz, not Caliber 6139.
How to decide if the SSC947 suits you
Consider the published measurements and functions against your own preferences rather than assuming a particular fit or wearing experience:
Rank #3
- Bold Field Design: Green 41mm case with digital dial pairs with an adjustable black strap fitting wrists up to 8 inches for daily wear
- Serious Performance: A 100-hour chronograph tracks lap and split times, plus a 24-hour countdown timer and a month, day and date calendar for everyday training
- Everyday Alarms: Three daily, weekday, or weekend alarms with a 5-minute backup, 24-hour military time mode, and two time zones keep you on schedule
- Night-Ready Visibility: An acrylic lens and INDIGLO light-up dial keep the gray digital display easy to read from dawn to dusk and after dark
- Built to Last: A Timex watch is designed for durability and everyday reliability; every piece reflects our commitment to quality without compromise
- Decide whether a 41.4 mm diameter, 45.9 mm lug-to-lug length, 13.0 mm thickness, and 164.0 g listed weight are right for you.
- Consider whether the gold/yellow and blue colorway works with the way you dress.
- Choose whether a solar-quartz chronograph fits your preference better than a mechanical watch.
- Check whether a 21 mm lug width works for the strap options you are considering. Lug width alone does not guarantee bracelet, end-link, or spring-bar compatibility.
- Compare Seiko’s current local price and retailer and warranty terms before buying; price and availability can change by market and over time.
How does the SSC947 relate to the 1969 Speedtimer?
Seiko’s Speedtimer history page says the company introduced the Speedtimer with Caliber 6139 in 1969 and describes that movement as an automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. Seiko’s modern Speedtimer material describes V192 solar chronographs as inspired by this heritage. That supports a connection to the Speedtimer design story, not a claim that the SSC947 is a mechanical reissue.
For the SSC947 specifically, the practical distinction is clear: it uses a solar V192 movement and has the functions and dimensions listed above. If your priority is mechanical continuity with Caliber 6139, this is not that watch.
