The TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E5 runs TAG Heuer OS, not Wear OS, and trades an open smartwatch ecosystem for a more controlled, TAG Heuer-branded experience. That makes the shift a plausible choice for buyers who prioritize luxury-watch design and the brand’s curated features—but the E5 is a poor fit if you need Google Wallet, third-party apps, LTE, or maximum smartwatch utility.
The E5 is best understood as a luxury watch with connected features, not a feature-for-feature replacement for an Apple Watch or a typical Wear OS watch. Whether the change was “right” depends on what you want from a smartwatch.
What changed when TAG Heuer left Wear OS?
The Connected Calibre E5 replaces Wear OS with TAG Heuer OS. TAG Heuer describes the system as proprietary and developed in-house, while its product information says it is based on the Android Open Source Project. In practice, the important change for buyers is that TAG Heuer controls the interface and built-in experience rather than relying on Wear OS and its app ecosystem.
TAG Heuer’s stated product pitch emphasizes its own watch faces, calls, a voice assistant, widgets, and proprietary sport and wellness features. The E5 also supports iOS 18 and newer and Android 13 and newer according to TAG Heuer’s U.S. product information. Its Made for iPhone certification supports the company’s cross-platform positioning, but it does not make the watch equivalent to an Apple Watch.

TechRadar reported at launch that TAG Heuer said around 70% of its users paired their watches with an iPhone. That figure is a company-attributed report, not an independently verified user survey. It offers context for the iPhone strategy, but should not be treated as proof that Wear OS was unsuitable for most TAG Heuer customers.
What do you lose by moving away from Wear OS?
The main cost is ecosystem breadth. TAG Heuer support says the E5 does not support contactless payments; its FAQ explains that “as it is an independent platform, contactless payment features are not available on this model.” TechRadar’s launch coverage also reports that the E5 lacks third-party apps and LTE.
| Capability | Connected Calibre E5 | What that means for buyers |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | TAG Heuer OS, based on Android Open Source Project | A TAG Heuer-controlled experience rather than Wear OS |
| Contactless payments | Not supported, according to TAG Heuer support | No Google Wallet payments from the watch |
| Third-party apps | Not supported, according to TechRadar’s launch report | You are limited to the built-in experience |
| LTE | No LTE, according to TechRadar’s launch report | The watch does not provide cellular independence |
| Phone compatibility | iOS 18+ and Android 13+ listed by TAG Heuer | Designed to work with both platforms, including iPhone |
That makes the E5 a curated smartwatch rather than an open platform. If you depend on wrist payments, downloadable apps, or cellular service without your phone, these are substantial limitations. If you mainly want a luxury-looking watch for calls, notifications, and selected built-in features, the trade-off may matter less.
Design and specifications
The E5 collection is offered in 40 mm and 45 mm sizes, according to TAG Heuer. Materials and dimensions differ by configuration, so specifications for one model should not be generalized to the entire range.

For example, TAG Heuer’s U.S. product page for model SBT8A80.BT6293 describes a 45 mm version with a black DLC-coated grade 2 titanium case, black ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal, black rubber strap, and interchangeable strap system. It lists a 1.39-inch OLED display with 454 × 454 resolution, 50 m water resistance, a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 5100+, Wi-Fi, GNSS, Bluetooth 5.3, and sensors including heart rate, compass, accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone, and altimeter.
| Specification | 45 mm model SBT8A80.BT6293 |
|---|---|
| Case | 45 mm; grade 2 titanium with black DLC coating |
| Bezel and crystal | Black ceramic bezel; sapphire crystal |
| Display | 1.39-inch OLED, 454 × 454 |
| Thickness | 14.80 mm |
| Water resistance | 50 m |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi, GNSS, Bluetooth 5.3 |
| Strap | Black rubber, interchangeable system |
These are manufacturer specifications for the listed 45 mm model, not independent test results and not a description of every E5 edition. The titanium, ceramic, sapphire, and interchangeable strap system are part of the watch’s luxury proposition; they do not compensate for missing smartwatch functions if those functions are central to your needs.
Sport and wellness features
TAG Heuer lists Golf, Sports, and Wellness features as pre-installed on the cited 45 mm model. The company describes a Golf app with hole-layout displays and auto-scoring features. It also promotes dual-frequency GPS and running plans developed with New Balance. Treat these as advertised features rather than independent evidence of tracking accuracy or training quality.
Rank #2
TAG Heuer says six running plans were developed with New Balance. Its launch feature described sleep tracking, SpO₂, and heart-rate variability as features expected later that winter; the current U.S. product page now lists sleep tracking, SpO₂, breath rate, and heart-rate variability monitoring. Availability can vary by software version, model, and region, and the research does not establish independent accuracy testing or health outcomes. These are wellness features, not medical diagnoses.
The Formula 1 edition has edition-specific content. TAG Heuer’s February 2026 feature describes 24 exclusive F1 watch faces and an F1 app with schedules, results, and standings. Those details apply to that edition, not every E5 model.
Battery life depends on mode
Battery claims should be read alongside the usage mode and model. TAG Heuer lists up to three days in low-power mode for the 45 mm model and up to two days in low-power mode for the 40 mm model. For the cited 45 mm U.S. model, TAG Heuer lists 17 hours in running sport mode. These are manufacturer claims, and TAG Heuer warns that actual battery life varies with use.
| Claim | Model or mode | Source context |
|---|---|---|
| Up to three days | 45 mm, low-power mode | TAG Heuer claim; not ordinary full-feature use |
| Up to two days | 40 mm, low-power mode | TAG Heuer claim |
| 17 hours | 45 mm, running sport mode | TAG Heuer U.S. product page for the cited model |
TAG Heuer says battery life can vary with apps, notifications, settings, charge cycles, screen brightness, and Wi-Fi use. Do not interpret the low-power figure as a guarantee of several days under every pattern of use.
Price and value
Price depends on the model and market. At research time, TAG Heuer’s U.S. product page listed model SBT8A80.BT6293 at $2,450. TechRadar reported a launch starting price of $1,600 in 2025. These figures refer to different contexts: the current listing for a specific U.S. model is not a universal E5 price, and launch pricing is not a current quote for every configuration.

TAG Heuer’s interchangeable strap system also gives buyers options, but check compatibility for the exact model before choosing a replacement strap.
How to decide whether the E5 is for you
| If you prioritize… | How the E5 fits |
|---|---|
| Luxury-watch styling and materials | A strong part of the E5’s proposition, varying by model |
| Using an iPhone with a non-Apple watch | Compatible with iOS 18+ according to TAG Heuer, with MFi certification |
| Google Wallet payments | Not supported |
| Third-party watch apps | Not supported, according to TechRadar’s launch coverage |
| Cellular independence | No LTE, according to TechRadar’s launch coverage |
| Sport and wellness functions | TAG Heuer advertises a selection of built-in features; independent accuracy testing was not established |
| Best feature-per-dollar value | Hard to justify if smartwatch breadth is the main priority |
Choose the E5 if you want TAG Heuer’s design and are comfortable with a curated set of functions. Look elsewhere if payments, an extensive app catalog, LTE, or maximum utility are essential. This is a buyer-fit judgment, not a claim that the E5 objectively outperforms competing smartwatches.
