The three SPB references each had a stated edition of 5,500; the higher-specification SLA061 was limited to 1,000. All four were announced for March 2022, so those historical edition figures do not establish present-day stock.
Which watches are in the 2022 Black Series?
Seiko presented the collection as four watches inspired by night diving. Its official concept uses a black case to evoke the dark sea and orange accents to represent underwater lights. Seiko also says the hands and markers use Lumibrite for legibility in dark conditions; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent visibility test. The SPB models include a Seichu-braided fabric strap and an additional black silicone strap. Seiko’s 2022 collection page identifies these models and their announced release details.
| Reference | Design basis | Movement | Edition and announced timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPB253 | Modern reinterpretation of the 1965 Mechanical Diver | Caliber 6R35 | 5,500 pieces; March 2022 |
| SPB255 | Modern reinterpretation of the 1968 Mechanical Diver | Caliber 6R35 | 5,500 pieces; March 2022 |
| SPB257 | Modern reinterpretation of the 1970 Mechanical Diver | Caliber 6R35 | 5,500 pieces; March 2022 |
| SLA061 | Modern reinterpretation of the 1970 Mechanical Diver | Caliber 8L35 | 1,000 pieces; March 2022 |

How do the three SPB references differ?
The main distinction Seiko gives is their historical design basis: SPB253 draws on the 1965 diver, SPB255 on the 1968 diver, and SPB257 on the 1970 diver. All three use Caliber 6R35 and share the same announced 5,500-piece edition size. Seiko describes its 1965 model as Japan’s first diver’s watch and says it was used in Antarctica in the 1960s. The brand says the original 1968 model had 300 m water resistance and a 10-beat automatic movement; its modern reinterpretation is 42 mm.

For the 1970 heritage, Seiko says the original was worn by adventurer Naomi Uemura during a solo dogsled journey of 12,000 km from Greenland to Alaska between 1974 and 1976. The brand says the SPB257 updates the original’s 150 m water resistance to 200 m and uses sapphire crystal. These are Seiko’s historical and product descriptions, not independent assessments. See Seiko’s collection description.
What sets the SLA061 apart?
SLA061 shares the 1970-diver design lineage with SPB257, but it is a distinct reference with a different movement and smaller edition. Seiko specifies Caliber 8L35, automatic winding with manual winding capability, approximately 50 hours of power reserve and stated accuracy of +15/-10 seconds per day. Its US product listing gives the following model-specific specifications and a listed price of USD 3,300; price and availability can change, and the listing is not a current-market valuation.

Is SLA061 the same watch as SLA035?
No. SLA035 is an earlier, separate Black Series model. Seiko UK lists it as a 600-piece saturation diver with Caliber 8L35 and 300 m / 1,000 ft water resistance. Its listed dimensions are 44.3 mm in diameter, 15.4 mm thick and 50.5 mm lug-to-lug. Those figures belong to SLA035, not SLA061. Seiko UK’s SLA035 page provides its model specifications.

Does “The Black Series” refer only to the 2022 watches?
No. Seiko has used the Black Series label for releases in multiple years, so a reference number matters when comparing edition counts or specifications. Its Singapore page names SSC673, SRPC49 and SNE493 in a 2018 Black Series release. Seiko Japan’s 2020 page names SBDC095, limited to 7,000 pieces, and SBDL065, limited to 3,500 pieces, with January and February 2020 release timing respectively. These earlier watches are not part of the four-model 2022 group.

What should buyers verify?
- Check the exact reference—SPB253, SPB255, SPB257 or SLA061—rather than relying on a listing title that only says “black Seiko” or “Black Series.”
- Distinguish the 2022 SLA061 from SLA035; they have different water-resistance ratings and dimensions.
- Treat edition size as the announced production limit, not evidence of current availability, remaining stock or resale value.
- For a replacement strap, confirm fit and attachment compatibility for the exact reference. Seiko warns that a fabric strap attached to SLA061 may allow the spring bar to come off because of the watch’s structure, potentially preventing replacement.
