The Seiko SBCM023 pairs a compact dive-watch format with the quartz Cal. 8F35, whose perpetual calendar and stated accuracy are unusual features in a practical diver. Seiko’s manual documents the caliber’s functions, but it cannot establish the condition of a particular secondhand watch: a used example needs its own inspection and, before water use, a water-resistance test.
What makes the Seiko SBCM023 unusual?
The SBCM023 is identified by specialist sources as a quartz diver fitted with Seiko Cal. 8F35-00A0. Its distinction is the combination of a dive-oriented format and a perpetual calendar, rather than a mechanical movement. The caliber manual is the primary source for the movement’s documented functions and specifications; exact-case measurements below come from secondary sources.

Seiko describes the 8F35 as having an annual rate of less than 20 seconds under the manual’s specified usage and temperature conditions. This is a stated caliber specification, not a measurement of every SBCM023 or a guarantee that an older example still keeps time to that rate. Seiko Cal. 8F35 instructions.
How does the perpetual calendar work?
Once the calendar is set correctly, it accounts for months of different lengths and leap years. Seiko says: “Once set, the calendar automatically adjusts for odd and even months including February of leap years up to February 28, 2100.” The watch displays the month, date, and number of years since the last leap year, according to the manual. The stated calendar coverage ends on February 28, 2100; it should not be described as an indefinitely self-correcting calendar beyond that date.

- STUNNING BLUE DIAL: this automatic men's watch features a deep blue, pressed pattern and gloss finish surrounded by a stainless steel watch case
- AUTOMATIC: these self-winding, automatic men's watches are powered by your movement, with a power reserve of 41 hours
- STAINLESS STEEL: features a durable stainless steel watch case and bracelet with see through caseback
- WATER-RESISTANT: these men's wrist watches are water-resistant down to 50 meters
- 4R35 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable caliber 4R35 automatic movement, this accurate men's watch keeps precise time
That automation is useful for an everyday watch: the date does not need routine correction at the end of short months. It does not remove the need to set the calendar correctly in the first place or consult the instructions if its displays are unclear.
What are the documented specifications?
| Feature | What the source establishes |
|---|---|
| Movement | Cal. 8F35; specialist sources associate it with the SBCM023 reference and 8F35-00A0 case code. Antiwatchman listing |
| Accuracy | Annual rate of less than 20 seconds under conditions specified in Seiko’s Cal. 8F35 manual; not a model-by-model test result. Seiko manual |
| Calendar | Automatically adjusts for odd and even months, including leap years, through February 28, 2100; displays month, date, and years since the last leap year. Seiko manual |
| Battery | One SEIKO CR2412 battery is specified. The manual excerpt does not state a battery-life duration. Seiko manual |
| Water resistance | Seiko states 200 m and suitability for scuba diving for the caliber’s watch instructions; this is not evidence of any individual older watch’s present resistance. Seiko manual |
| Case and lug dimensions | A 2009 review reports a 39 mm case and 20 mm drilled lugs. A specialist seller gives 38.2 mm as bezel width and 20 mm lug width. These are source-specific measurements of different dimensions, not one definitive case measurement. WatchReport review; Antiwatchman listing |
How should you interpret its dive-watch rating?
Seiko’s Cal. 8F35 instructions specify 200 m water resistance and suitability for scuba diving, and describe a rotating bezel and screw-lock crown. Those are the documented design specifications. They do not confirm that the seals, crown, case, or crystal of a decades-old example remain sound today.
If you intend to swim or dive with a used SBCM023, have a qualified watchmaker assess it and perform a water-resistance test before aquatic use. A battery change alone does not restore or verify water resistance. Treat the published rating as a specification of the watch design, not a condition report for the particular watch you are considering.
What do published dimensions and battery claims tell you?
Exact-model dimensions vary by source and by the dimension being measured. Paul Hubbard’s November 1, 2009 WatchReport review reports a 39 mm size and 20 mm drilled lugs. Antiwatchman reports a 38.2 mm bezel width and 20 mm lug width. The 38.2 mm figure is explicitly bezel width, so it should not be substituted for a case measurement.

Battery-duration claims are not consistent across the cited sources. The 2009 review says ten years; Antiwatchman cites eight years from a catalog; Seiko’s manual specifies a CR2412 but does not state a duration. Neither secondary figure is sufficient to establish a definitive lifespan for every watch, which will also depend on its individual history and use. Confirm the correct battery type and have replacement performed competently.

The SBCM023 is best approached as a secondhand-watch search, not as a model with assured current stock. Antiwatchman describes examples from approximately 2003–2010 and marks its cited listings sold out; that is evidence of resale context, not a complete official production record or a statement of present availability.
- Condition and service history: Ask what has been serviced, when, and whether documentation is available. Inspect the case, crystal, crown, bezel, bracelet, and clasp for wear or damage.
- Water-resistance evidence: If you plan any water use, ask for recent pressure-test results for the specific watch rather than relying on its original rating.
- Completeness and fit: Confirm bracelet links and whether the bracelet suits your wrist. If buying a strap, verify the 20 mm lug measurement and end fit before ordering.
- Calendar and timekeeping: Check that the displays operate and that the calendar can be set as described in the 8F35 manual. A review’s owner timing observation after a month is anecdotal, not a guarantee or independent test.
- Seller terms: Review the return policy, authenticity assurances, and any stated condition limitations before purchase.
Hubbard’s review also reports 2009 list and street prices. Those historical figures are not current price guidance, so evaluate any present offer against the watch’s actual condition, completeness, and service documentation.
Who is the SBCM023 for?
It suits someone who wants a quartz diver with an unusually capable calendar and values the 8F35’s documented annual-accuracy specification. It is less straightforward for a buyer seeking a new watch with assured availability or one ready for water use without inspection: this is an older model, and an individual example’s condition matters as much as its original specifications.
