But its 53.0 mm-long, 48.7 mm-wide, 15.2 mm-thick case is conspicuous, and one watch writer found it too large and chunky for his own daily wear. The evidence supports “possible, depending on your wrist and routine,” not a universal fit recommendation.
What is the Seiko Spacewalk SPS005?
The SPS005 is a 100-piece commemorative edition inspired by the Spring Drive watch Seiko developed for spaceflight. It is not the individual mission watch worn by spaceflight participant Richard Garriott. Seiko presented the project at Baselworld in 2008 for Garriott’s planned mission, and its press material described a design intended to be light, airtight, strong, easy to read and use, safe, and accurate. Seiko says Garriott wore the watch during his International Space Station mission and on a later extravehicular activity (EVA); the Seiko Museum Ginza records successful use on an ISS spacewalk. Seiko’s 2008 announcement and the Seiko Museum record document the mission story.

Fratello reports that Seiko later produced 100 commemorative watches under reference SPS005, with deliveries beginning in February 2010. A later Seiko press specification sheet uses the reference SPS005J1. These are references to the commemorative model, not evidence that the mission watch itself was one of those 100 pieces. Fratello’s 2016 account covers the commemorative edition and its reference.
How large and heavy is the SPS005?
Seiko lists the high-intensity titanium case at 53.0 mm from 12 to 6 o’clock, 48.7 mm from 3 to 9, and 15.2 mm thick. Its stated weight is 92.5 g. The measurements explain the main daily-wear trade-off: despite its comparatively low stated weight, the watch occupies a large area on the wrist and has substantial height.

These are published model specifications, not a fit test for any particular wrist. In his 2016 account, Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer said the case could be conspicuous, might not sit beneath cuffs, and could catch on doorframes. Those are personal observations, not formal fit standards. Seiko’s 2008 press material lists the dimensions and weight; Seiko’s later commemorative-model specification sheet provides model details.
What does the 5R86 movement do?
The SPS005 uses Seiko’s Spring Drive Chronograph Caliber 5R86. It combines a mainspring-powered drive with Spring Drive’s electronic regulation, rather than being a battery-powered quartz watch. In Seiko’s description, energy from the mainspring turns the gear train and generates electricity for a crystal oscillator and integrated circuit, which regulate the glide wheel and hands. Seiko says the glide wheel turns eight times per second and describes the system as delivering one-second-a-day accuracy; that is the manufacturer’s general Spring Drive claim, not an independent measurement of an individual SPS005. Seiko’s Spring Drive overview explains the mechanism.
The movement adds practical timing and travel functions to the time display:
- Hours, minutes, seconds, and date
- GMT hand for a second time zone
- Power-reserve indicator
- 12-hour chronograph
Seiko lists 50 jewels and a 72-hour power reserve, including with the chronograph operating. Its published specifications also list 416 movement parts. These are manufacturer figures, not independent test results for a specific watch.
Was it built for spaceflight?
Yes. Seiko’s stated design priorities addressed the demands of use in space, including readability, low weight, strength, sealing, safe operation, and accuracy. The Seiko Museum records an operating environment from -20°C to +70°C and successful use on an ISS spacewalk. These mission details give the watch a documented purpose beyond its commemorative styling; they do not establish that every example has been independently tested to those conditions.
Can you wear the SPS005 every day?
One owner’s reported routine suggests it can be worn frequently. Fratello’s 2016 article says the owner wore his watch often, sometimes for weeks, and changed straps; the writer also had a short opportunity to wear that example. Broer’s own verdict was: “It is not my choice for a daily watch as it is very large and chunky, but I can understand that someone is wearing this every day.” That is useful firsthand context, but it is not long-term testing across different wrists or wardrobes.
For a prospective wearer, the central question is not simply whether 92.5 g sounds manageable. The case footprint, thickness, sleeve clearance, and likelihood of bumping the watch against surroundings will matter in ordinary use. The account establishes that frequent wear is possible for at least one owner; it cannot tell you whether the proportions will be comfortable for you.
What strap does it use?
The original configuration is described as ballistic or elastic nylon with titanium hardware and hook-and-loop fastening. Fratello also reports that the owner wore a custom leather NATO strap. That example does not establish that any standard or aftermarket strap will fit: check the specific watch’s attachment dimensions and hardware constraints before choosing an alternative.

What is known about availability and price?
Fratello reported in 2016 that the 100-piece edition had long been sold out. That historical statement does not establish current availability or value. No current market price is supported here, so the edition’s present asking price or resale value should not be inferred from its original production history.
