The Longines Ultra-Chron Classic is the movement-led choice: its automatic caliber runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, uses a silicon balance spring and offers up to 52 hours of power reserve. The King Seiko SJE089 is a more specifically sized alternative, with a 38.6 mm case, angular KSK-inspired styling and an approximately 45-hour reserve. Both are steel, date-equipped watches rated to 5 bar. Because the Longines name covers 37 mm and 40 mm versions, its exact reference and strap configuration matter when comparing fit and price.

How the movements compare
Longines: high-beat operation and silicon
Longines’ clearest mechanical distinction is its 36,000-vibrations-per-hour rate, paired with a monocrystalline silicon balance spring and up to 52 hours of reserve. The high beat rate is a specification, not proof that an individual watch will keep better time than a King Seiko in daily use. Longines describes the Ultra-Chron Classic as chronometer-certified; for a numerical accuracy comparison, consult the formal certification and tolerance information for the precise reference rather than infer a real-world result from the label.
King Seiko: 6L35 and a stated daily range
The SJE089 uses Seiko’s automatic 6L35 caliber. Seiko’s 2023 announcement gives its frequency as 28,800 vibrations per hour and its reserve as 45 hours; the current US product page describes reserve as approximately 45 hours and states an accuracy range of +15 to −10 seconds per day. That range is the manufacturer’s specification, not a promise about the performance of every watch or a head-to-head timing test.

- Size, approximately 13.5" x 10.5"
- Ad has no rips or tears but might show some yellowing due to age
- Packed in cellophane envelope with cardboard backing
On the published reserve figures alone, the Longines offers up to seven hours more than the King Seiko’s approximately 45 hours. The word “up to” and Seiko’s “approximately” matter: actual running time depends on the individual watch and its state of wind.
Fit: decide which Longines size you mean
The SJE089 is the more completely dimensioned reference in the cited comparison: 38.6 mm across, 45.8 mm lug-to-lug and 10.7 mm thick. Lug-to-lug is especially useful for estimating how a watch spans the wrist, though wrist shape and personal preference still affect fit.

- Stainless steel with double safety folding clasp and push-piece opening mechanism
- 5 Year International Warranty
Ultra-Chron Classic listings include both 37 mm and 40 mm case variants. Those diameters do not settle the fit question by themselves, and the cited Longines pages do not state lug-to-lug measurements. A 37 mm Longines is nominally smaller across than the 38.6 mm King Seiko; the 40 mm version is nominally larger. Try the exact version when possible, and compare case span as well as diameter if Longines provides that dimension for the reference you are considering.
Design and wearing character
King Seiko’s angular KSK cues
Seiko connects the SJE089 to the KSK design, using angular case lines, a flat dial, faceted markers and diamond-cut hands. The visual effect is more sharply faceted than a round case profile alone might suggest. Fratello describes the King Seiko in this matchup as the dressier option; that is the publication’s design judgment, not an objective specification. See its head-to-head comparison.

Longines: choose the configuration, not just the family name
The Ultra-Chron Classic spans two surfaced case sizes and different strap configurations, including alligator leather and a steel bracelet. That changes both the look and the listed price. Identify the reference—such as the 37 mm L2.537.4.72.6 or the 40 mm L2.937.4.72.2—before deciding whether its proportions and strap suit your use. The family name alone is not a precise buying specification.

Both manufacturers rate these models to 5 bar. This is a stated water-resistance rating, not independent confirmation of performance or a blanket guarantee of suitability for every water activity. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the particular watch and have water resistance checked as appropriate over time.

Both models also provide automatic movement, a date display and sapphire crystal. Those shared basics make movement, fit, styling and configuration more useful differentiators than the presence of these features.
Price: compare exact references and straps
On the US manufacturer pages reviewed in 2026, Seiko lists the SJE089 at $3,300. Longines listings surfaced at $3,900 for alligator-strap references and $4,000 for steel-bracelet references. These are displayed prices, which can change and do not establish what a retailer will charge or whether a specific configuration is in stock. Check the linked manufacturer page for the exact reference before purchase.

At those listed prices, the SJE089 is less expensive than either surfaced Longines configuration. The gap is not a like-for-like measure of movement quality: strap, case size and the individual model’s specifications differ. Compare the exact watch you would buy rather than a broad family name against a single King Seiko reference.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Longines Ultra-Chron Classic if its 36,000-vibrations-per-hour movement, silicon balance spring and up-to-52-hour reserve are your priorities. Decide first between the 37 mm and 40 mm references, then compare the actual strap configuration and price.
- Choose the King Seiko SJE089 if you want a precisely dimensioned 38.6 mm watch with a 45.8 mm lug-to-lug span, angular KSK-inspired design and a lower displayed US manufacturer price than the surfaced Longines versions.
- Try them on before settling the fit if wrist coverage is decisive. The SJE089’s lug-to-lug dimension is available in the cited specification; an equivalent figure is not stated for the cited Longines references.
Neither published specification set establishes which watch will keep better time on your wrist. Treat accuracy claims as manufacturer information, not a substitute for testing an individual example.
