The available evidence here verifies Seiko’s specifications and model details, but does not establish a month of hands-on use. So this is a careful buying guide, not a first-person review: it explains what the watch is, what its numbers mean, and what to check before deciding whether it suits you.
What the SPB317J1 is
Seiko lists the SPB317J1 as a Prospex Sea diver’s watch. It pairs a stainless-steel case with a silicone band and a black dial, with a date display and a unidirectional rotating bezel. The model is part of Seiko’s modern Prospex diver line; the brand describes later Prospex watches as reinterpretations of its 1965 diver’s watch, which it identifies as its first diver’s watch. Seiko’s heritage page provides that history in the brand’s own terms.
Be careful when comparing it with neighboring references: Seiko’s 2022 Prospex brochure shows the SPB317J1 with silicone, while the SPB313J1 and SPB315J1 are bracelet-equipped configurations. Those variants should not be treated as the exact same supplied package. Seiko Prospex brochure (2022).
How the case dimensions may translate to fit
Seiko lists a 41.0 mm case diameter, 12.3 mm thickness, 46.9 mm lug-to-lug length, and 20 mm lug spacing. The watch weighs 100.0 g according to the same specification page. Diameter is only one part of fit: lug-to-lug length can help you judge whether the case may span your wrist, while thickness affects how it sits under a cuff. None of these dimensions can establish comfort on a particular wrist without trying the watch on.

The curved sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface. That is a construction detail, not a claim about how glare behaves in every lighting condition. Seiko also specifies magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m. Seiko’s US product page lists the dimensions and materials.
Movement, accuracy, and power reserve
The SPB317J1 uses Seiko’s 6R35 automatic movement, which can also be wound manually. Seiko lists 24 jewels, a stop-seconds function, and a date display. Its stated accuracy range is +25 to -15 seconds per day, and the stated power reserve is approximately 70 hours. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a month-long measurement of this particular watch.
For a buyer, the practical distinction is straightforward: automatic means the movement winds with wrist motion, while manual winding lets you add power by turning the crown. The reserve figure is approximate, so it should not be read as a guarantee that every individual watch will run for precisely 70 hours after a full wind.
Water resistance and dive-watch features
Seiko specifies 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance, a screw-down crown, a screw case back, and a unidirectional rotating bezel. These are the manufacturer’s listed specifications; they do not amount to independent testing of this watch or establish that it is appropriate for a particular dive. Follow Seiko’s operating and care guidance for the watch, and do not treat a water-resistance rating as a substitute for checking the crown is secured or the watch’s condition.

Strap options and model differences
The SPB317J1 is listed with a silicone band and 20 mm lug spacing. That nominal width can help identify replacement-strap options, but it is not enough to confirm that any third-party strap will fit cleanly. Check the attachment method, spring-bar clearance, and end shape against the watch before buying; the available specifications do not verify a specific aftermarket strap.
If you prefer a bracelet, distinguish the SPB317J1 from the SPB313J1 and SPB315J1 rather than assuming the silicone model includes a bracelet or that the variants are interchangeable in every detail. Seiko’s brochure identifies their different supplied configurations.
Price and whether it may be worth buying
When checked in 2026, Seiko’s US product page listed the SPB317J1 at USD 900, and its UK page listed it at GBP 860. These are regional official listing prices from separate markets, not a currency-converted comparison or a live price guarantee; availability and current pricing can change. Check the relevant Seiko page or local authorized retailer before purchase: US listing and UK listing.
Whether it is worth buying depends on what you value. The verified case measurements, sapphire crystal, 6R35 movement, specified 200 m diver’s rating, and silicone configuration give you concrete points to compare with other watches in your market. Comfort, real-world accuracy, lume performance, strap feel, and long-term wear are personal or observational questions; the specifications alone cannot answer them. Try the watch on if fit is decisive, and base any performance judgment on evidence from the specific watch rather than the movement’s stated figures.
