The Seiko Sportsmatic 6619-8230 is a vintage automatic day-date watch in Seiko’s Sportsmatic 5 family. A 2015 review of one example reports a 38 mm stainless-steel case, 19 mm lug width, domed acrylic crystal and automatic 6619 movement. Those measurements and operating details are useful starting points, not guarantees for every surviving watch; check the individual piece before buying parts or a strap.

What the Sportsmatic 6619-8230 is

The 6619-8230 belongs to the Sportsmatic 5 family, a line Seiko introduced in 1963. Seiko’s museum describes the Sportsmatic 5 as combining three hands, a day-date display, automatic winding and water resistance in a practical design, with a recessed crown. Seiko’s heritage history likewise dates the family’s launch to 1963 and identifies it as the first Japanese automatic-winding day-date model. These are family-level historical details; they do not establish the exact launch date or current condition of any 6619-8230.

Seiko’s history of the Five also describes the Magic Lever winding system, developed in 1959 and later refined for the line. It uses rotor motion to drive a push-pull action that winds the mainspring. That provides context for Seiko’s automatic-watch approach, but the museum’s account is not a technical service specification for this particular reference. Seiko Museum Ginza Seiko heritage

Reported specifications and strap fit

Fratello’s 2015 review describes its 6619-8230 example as having a 38 mm stainless-steel case, 19 mm lugs, a high-domed acrylic crystal and an automatic 6619 movement. The article does not make those measurements universal across all watches bearing the reference. Case repairs, replacement parts or measurement methods can affect what is on a particular watch.

Seiko Analog Display Green Dial Automatic Silver Toned Steel Men's Watch SNKM97
  • Case diameter: 43.5mm
  • Gold tone second hand
  • Water Resistant To 165 Feet
  • Power reserve: approximately 41 hours
  • 21,600 vibrations per hour
Detail What is reported What to verify
Case 38 mm diameter; stainless steel, per Fratello’s reviewed example Measure the watch and inspect its case condition
Lug width 19 mm, per Fratello’s reviewed example Measure between the lugs before ordering a strap
Crystal High-domed acrylic, per the review Check the installed crystal and fit with a watchmaker
Movement Automatic 6619, per the review Confirm the movement inside the individual watch

A 19 mm watch strap is a plausible fit only if the actual watch measures 19 mm at its lugs. Do not order on the reference number alone.

Fratello’s 2015 review

Movement and calendar operation

Fratello reports that its example’s date can be quick-set by pressing the crown, while the day is changed by advancing the hands. It also says the movement cannot be wound through the crown. These are review-reported operating details rather than a substitute for instructions specific to every watch. Because vintage mechanisms can be fragile or unfamiliar, ask a watchmaker how to operate the individual piece rather than forcing the crown or calendar.

Parts and maintenance

A reference-specific parts page lists acrylic crystal 335W02AN00, crown references 35M03NS1 and 35M03NG, case-back gasket 0C2980B01 and crown gasket DJ0060B01. Treat these numbers as leads for a parts supplier or watchmaker to check, not proof that parts are in stock or will fit a watch with replaced or modified components.

Do not infer present-day water resistance from the Sportsmatic family’s historical description. For a watch that will be exposed to water, rely on a current pressure test performed on that particular watch; absent a successful test, keep it dry.

What to check before buying one

  • Reference and movement: Compare the case-back reference with the movement identity and the rest of the watch. A collector account describes a September 1967 6619-8230 with a 6619A movement and contrasts it with a similar-looking 7625-8233; it is an example, not a production ledger or a way to date every watch. Vintage Watch Advisors’ collector account
  • Dial and hands: Look for corrosion, refinishing or parts that appear inconsistent with the rest of the watch. A reference number alone does not establish originality.
  • Case: Inspect for corrosion, damage and polishing or refinishing that may have altered its appearance.
  • Calendar and movement: Ask the seller to demonstrate operation and provide any service records. If the watch’s operation is uncertain, have a watchmaker assess it before use.
  • Parts fit: Confirm dimensions and compatibility with a competent supplier, especially if the crystal or crown has been replaced.
  • Water exposure: Request a current pressure-test result rather than relying on a vintage marking or the Sportsmatic family’s historical water-resistance feature.

The available sources do not establish a current market price, inventory level, exact-reference production span, accuracy figure or service interval. Evaluate an individual watch on its condition, originality, operation and documented maintenance rather than assuming a price or performance from its reference alone.
