Wittnauer 8025: A 1960s Automatic with a 24-Hour Dial

The Wittnauer 8025 pairs a 1960s automatic movement with an unusual dial that lays out all 24 hours. Here’s what is documented—and what to check on an individual example.

The Wittnauer reference 8025 is a 1960s automatic distinguished by a dial that shows the full day at once: hours 1–12 sit inside the hour plots, while 13–24 appear on an outer track. That unusual layout makes it a model-specific collector piece, but available records do not establish how many were made or survive, or whether it is statistically rare.

What makes the Wittnauer 8025’s dial unusual?

On the black dial, white numerals 1–12 sit inside the hour plots; their corresponding 13–24 numerals are printed outside them, with white hash marks separating the tracks. Michael Stockton’s hands-on account describes a matte center against a glossy outer circumference. This arrangement presents the 24-hour cycle on a single dial rather than requiring a second time zone or a separate subdial. The hands are small and luminous, so a buyer should consider whether the scale is comfortable to read at a glance.

Stockton summed up the model in his March 15, 2018 Fratello article: “The Wittnauer 8025 is a relatively simple watch, but it’s distinctive.” Read the Fratello account.

What is known about the case and movement?

Hodinkee’s two sold listings identify the 8025 as a 1960s automatic in a 36 mm stainless-steel case, with an 18 mm lug width. They list different thicknesses—9 mm in one listing and 10.5 mm in the other—so treat “slim” as a general impression, not a guaranteed measurement for every example. The variation could reflect measurement methods or differences between the individual watches. The listings provide a useful starting point, not a uniform factory specification. Stockton describes a domed acrylic crystal, screw-down caseback, signed W crown and drilled lugs. He identifies the movement as C11KAS, also known as Record 1955/Longines 501, and reports 17 jewels, hand-winding capability and a frequency of 19,800 beats per hour. Those are details from his account, not a factory specification sheet. Hodinkee’s listings use the caliber name 11 KAS or 11KAS; Gazette Drouot’s auction record also identifies an automatic 11KAS movement. Hodinkee describes the crystal as non-sapphire in one listing and plexiglass in another. The auction record describes tritium hands and markers. Gazette Drouot auction record.

How rare is the 8025, and what does the price evidence show?

The 24-hour design is unusual, but the cited model-specific records do not provide a production total, count of surviving watches, sales dataset or formal rarity measure. Hodinkee characterizes the design as military-style; the available record does not establish that reference 8025 was issued to military personnel.

Price references are historical, not current valuation guidance. Stockton reported a typical trading range of $1,000–$1,500 in his March 15, 2018 article. Hodinkee’s two sold listings show individual prices of $1,300 and $1,500. Those examples do not establish present availability, a current market price or an average value. What should you check before buying one?

Condition and service history belong to each individual watch, not to the reference as a whole. Stockton recounts that his example stopped because one hand was slightly bent and was then serviced. A separate Hodinkee listing notes scratches and lume wear on its example. Neither account predicts the condition of another 8025.

  • DEPENDABLE CASIO QUALITY Built with Casio's legendary reliability, this watch features quartz accuracy of approximately ±30 seconds per month, water resistance for daily use, a durable chrome-plated resin case, and a stainless steel bracelet designed to withstand years of everyday wear.
  • Dial and hands: Check that the dial’s tracks and numerals are legible and inspect the hands and lume for condition and consistency with the particular watch.
  • Case fit: Try the watch on if possible. The listed diameters are 36 mm, but thickness varies across the two records, and wrist comfort can also depend on the case and lug shape.
  • Originality and condition: Examine the dial, hands, lume, crown and crystal, and ask what is original, replaced or restored.
  • Operation and service: Ask whether it runs, whether the hands move freely, and whether a watchmaker has documented recent service. A running vintage watch is not, by itself, proof of a known service history.
  • Strap fit: The documented lug width is 18 mm. Verify the width and spring-bar fit on the specific watch before choosing a strap.
  • Price: Use the 2018 observation and past sold listings as dated reference points only; compare the condition and documentation of the watch being offered rather than treating those figures as a current benchmark.

Is the Wittnauer 8025 the right vintage watch for you?

It suits a buyer drawn to a single-time display of the full 24-hour cycle and a relatively straightforward vintage automatic. The trade-off is that the unusual scale may take longer to read than a conventional 12-hour dial, and the available evidence does not establish water resistance, tested accuracy, power reserve, exact production years or current stock. Those details should be verified for the specific watch rather than assumed from its reference.
