The Citizen 51-2273 is a vintage automatic diver with a useful mix of practical proportions and distinctive period styling. A 2018 Fratello feature examined one example; specialist catalog Sweephand places the model in Citizen’s 8200 movement family. Its reported water-resistance rating, however, is not consistent across those sources, and neither establishes a model-specific official certification.
What is the Citizen 51-2273?
The 51-2273 is a vintage Citizen mechanical diver. Fratello’s February 15, 2018 feature describes the particular watch its author examined, while the specialist Sweephand reference catalogs the model under Citizen’s 8200 movement family. These are useful starting points for identifying the watch, but the details of an individual vintage example should not automatically be treated as universal specifications.
Fratello’s examined example measures roughly 40 mm across the case, with 20 mm between the lugs. Its matte black dial, luminous spade-shaped hands and day-date display give it a clear, functional look. The watch also has a unidirectional bezel with 60 clicks. These observations describe the example in the article; a watch that has been repaired, modified or assembled from replacement parts may differ.
Movement and everyday details
Sweephand places the 51-2273 in Citizen’s 8200 movement family. The available sources do not establish a model-specific Citizen manual or a complete movement specification for every 51-2273 variant, so buyers should verify the movement in the individual watch rather than relying on the model number alone.

- Featuring our Eco-Drive technology – powered by light, any light. 200 Meters Water Resistant and 5 Year Limited Warranty
The 20 mm lug width reported by Fratello suggests a common strap size, but measure the watch in hand before ordering. Vintage cases can be altered or repaired, and strap-end shape and clearance matter as well as nominal width.
Is it rated to 150 m or 200 m?
The consulted references disagree: Fratello reports 150 m for the watch it covered, while Sweephand lists 200 m for the model. Neither source is an official, model-specific Citizen certification record, and the official Citizen materials consulted do not resolve the difference. Treat both figures as source-attributed claims, not a settled specification.

Citizen’s current technical explanation says it reserves the term “diver’s watch” for watches conforming to ISO 6425, and discusses design considerations including readability, a unidirectional timing bezel and a screw-down crown. That general explanation does not demonstrate that the vintage 51-2273 carries current ISO certification or retains its original water resistance. Do not use an old rating as assurance that an individual watch is safe to submerge; the condition of its seals and case matters, and the cited sources do not provide a current pressure-test result.
Where it fits in Citizen’s diver history
Citizen’s official history places the automatic Challenge Diver’s debut in 1977. The company also recounts that a barnacle-covered Challenge Diver found at Australia’s Long Reef Beach in 1983 was still working. The official account does not identify that recovered watch as a 51-2273, so the famous Long Reef story should not be attached to this reference.

Citizen’s later milestones show the breadth of its diver-watch development: the Professional Diver, released in 1982, was described by the company as water resistant to 1,300 metres; the first Aqualand, released in 1985, had an electronic depth gauge measuring to 80 metres in 0.1-metre increments. Those milestones provide context, not specifications for the 51-2273.
A welcome to Citizen’s wider story
The 51-2273 also offers an entry point into a much longer company history. Citizen traces its predecessor, the Shokosha Watch Research Institute, to 1918, when it was established to produce Japanese timepieces. The institute completed its first pocket watch in 1924; Citizen’s account says Tokyo Mayor Count Shinpei Goto suggested the name CITIZEN for that first product. The company summarizes the achievement this way: “In 1924, it finally achieved its long-awaited goal of producing its own pocket watch.”

What to check when considering a vintage example
Fratello’s 2018 feature warns about incorrect crowns or hands, damaged date wheels and missing inner tension rings, as well as modification and wear. Those are practical inspection points, not a guarantee that every surviving watch has the same issues. Examine the individual watch and ask what has been replaced or serviced.
- Originality: Compare the hands, crown, dial and bezel with reliable references, and ask whether any parts have been replaced.
- Calendar: Check that the day and date display work correctly and look for damage to the date wheel.
- Case and bezel: Inspect wear, damage and any missing inner tension ring; confirm the bezel rotates as expected.
- Service and water resistance: Ask for service records and a recent pressure test if water resistance is important. The historical rating alone does not confirm present-day performance.
- Fit: Confirm the lug width and strap-end clearance on the specific watch before buying a strap.
Fratello’s estimate of $350–$500 for a decent example was its 2018 observation, not a current-market valuation. The available sources do not establish a present-day price range.

Fratello compares the 51-2273 with the Seiko 6309 and considers them closely matched. That is the author’s editorial assessment, not the result of an independently verified test. For a purchase decision, compare the actual watches rather than relying on a broad ranking.
