The discontinued Omega Railmaster ref. 2503.52.00 is a compelling pre-owned choice if you want a restrained, no-date, 39.2 mm tool watch—but whether you should buy a particular example depends on its condition, service record and price. Michael Stockton’s 2016 Fratello review describes its black dial, 150 m water resistance and calibre 2500. Those details belong to this older reference, not the 38 mm Railmasters Omega introduced in 2025.
Which 39 mm Railmaster is this?
This article is about the discontinued Omega ref. 2503.52.00, which Fratello Watches reviewer Michael Stockton described in 2016 as a 39.2 mm Railmaster. It is easy to confuse with the newer generation: Omega’s May 2025 announcement describes two different Railmaster variants, both 38 mm. The case-size difference is small on paper, but the watches also differ in dial layout, movement generation and stated magnetic resistance.
Omega traces the Railmaster to 1957, when it was introduced for railway staff as part of the “Professional Line.” The brand says the original design used an inner protective case to resist magnetic fields up to 1,000 gauss. That is historical context, not a specification to assume for the 2503.52.00. Omega’s 2025 Railmaster announcement describes the history and newer models.
What the 2503.52.00 offers
Stockton’s 2016 Fratello review reports a practical, deliberately uncluttered specification: a 39.2 mm case, no-date matte black dial, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, exhibition caseback and calibre 2500. The dial has Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12, with luminous arrow-shaped hour markers. The review also reports 150 m water resistance and a 20 mm lug width, and characterizes the case as Aqua Terra-style.
#1 Best Overall
- Model 220.10.40.20.03.001
- Dial: Matte black, no date, with 3/6/9/12 numerals and luminous arrow hour markers, according to the 2016 review.
- Movement: Omega calibre 2500, as reported by the review.
- Case and wear: 39.2 mm diameter and 20 mm lug width, as reported by the review.
- Water resistance: 150 m, as reported by the review; on a used watch, the rating should not be treated as proof of present-day water resistance.
These are specifications reported in Fratello’s October 2016 review, not findings from an inspection of an individual watch. For a pre-owned example, ask about its condition and have water resistance assessed by a qualified watchmaker before relying on it around water.
How it compares with the 2025 Railmasters
The newer watches are not simply the old 39 mm design in a slightly smaller case. Omega’s May 2025 announcement identifies a 38 mm grey-gradient model with calibre 8806 and a 38 mm beige-gradient small-seconds variant with calibre 8804. Omega states that these newer models resist magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss under Master Chronometer certification.

- Model 220.10.40.20.01.001
| Feature | Railmaster ref. 2503.52.00 | 2025 Railmaster variants |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | 39.2 mm, reported by Fratello in 2016 | 38 mm, stated by Omega in 2025 |
| Dial layout | Matte black, no date, 3/6/9/12 numerals and arrow markers, per Fratello | Grey-gradient; beige-gradient small-seconds variant, per Omega |
| Movement | Calibre 2500, per Fratello | Calibre 8806 (grey-gradient) and 8804 (beige small-seconds), per Omega |
| Magnetic resistance | Not stated for this reference in the cited review | Up to 15,000 gauss, stated by Omega for the new variants |
| Water resistance | 150 m, reported by Fratello | Not stated in the cited 2025 announcement |
| Certification | Not stated in the cited review | Master Chronometer, stated by Omega |
Omega says Master Chronometer certification tests watches for water resistance, power reserve, temperature fluctuation and exposure to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss. That certification description applies to the certified newer models; it does not establish the same magnetic resistance or certification for the 2503.52.00. Omega’s October 2025 account of the certification program explains its stated test scope.
Is the 2503.52.00 worth buying?
It may suit you if you want the older Railmaster’s compact proportions, high-contrast black dial and date-free layout, and you value its calibre 2500 era over the newer models’ documented magnetic resistance and certification. Choose the 2025 generation instead if those specific modern specifications matter more than the older reference’s design and proportions.

The key buying question is not whether every 2503.52.00 is a safe purchase; condition and maintenance vary from watch to watch. Stockton’s 2016 review raises concerns about early calibre 2500 issues and treats service history as useful context. That is a secondary account, not an Omega service bulletin, a diagnosis of every example or a guarantee that a serviced watch will remain trouble-free. A documented service record helps you judge an individual watch, but does not replace an assessment of its present condition.
Fratello’s review also mentions prices observed in 2016. Those historical figures are not a guide to current value. No current transaction data is established here, so compare live listings for the exact reference and condition rather than relying on old price examples.

What to check before purchasing a used example
- Verify the reference. Confirm that the watch is ref. 2503.52.00, rather than a different Railmaster generation or a similar-looking Omega.
- Assess condition and documentation. Review clear photographs and available paperwork; ask what is included and whether the watch’s identity and history can be substantiated.
- Ask for service history. Request dated service documentation and details of work performed. If the record is absent or unclear, factor an independent evaluation into your decision.
- Have it evaluated when needed. A qualified watchmaker can assess operation, condition and water resistance. Do not infer current water resistance from the model’s reported original 150 m rating.
- Compare the complete cost. Consider the asking price alongside the watch’s condition, service documentation and any work a professional evaluation indicates may be needed.
- Check strap compatibility. The review reports a 20 mm lug width, a useful starting point for strap searches; confirm the fit for the specific watch and strap before ordering.
No individual watch is authenticated, tested or inspected by the sources cited here. Treat each listing as its own purchase decision, not as proof that all examples share the same condition or service needs.
