The Kelbert Date Counter Chronograph looks like a conventional tri-compax chronograph at first glance, but its six-o’clock register does not record elapsed hours: it counts dates. Tomas Rosputinsky’s March 14, 2019 Fratello feature identifies the watch as a Kelbert powered by a Landeron 185 and describes a calendar adjusted by three pushers in the case side.
What is the Kelbert Date Counter Chronograph?
In his March 14, 2019 Fratello feature, Tomas Rosputinsky identifies the watch as a Kelbert Date Counter Chronograph with a Landeron 185 caliber. The name describes its display: the lower sub-register is a date counter, not an elapsed-time hour register. That distinction is easy to miss because the overall layout resembles a tri-compax chronograph.
The date track runs around the outer part of the six-o’clock register. Rosputinsky describes odd dates as Arabic numerals and even dates as dots. He estimates that the date counter is about 10 millimeters across, compared with roughly 8 millimeters for the other small counters; these are his approximations, not published manufacturer specifications.
How does the date counter work, and how is it set?
Reading the lower register
Read the lower register as a calendar display rather than as a chronograph hour counter. Its alternating numerals and dots mark the dates around the track. The visual resemblance to a conventional chronograph is precisely why identifying the register matters when assessing the watch.

Calendar controls on the featured Kelbert
Rosputinsky reports three calendar pushers on the side of the featured case and says they operated easily and positively on his example. His article does not give a pusher-by-pusher instruction sequence, so do not assume a particular pusher assignment or setting procedure without confirming it for the individual watch. A watchmaker or the seller should demonstrate the controls before purchase.
Other date-counter layouts
The article also mentions related date-counter arrangements on other watches that use a revolving bezel and crown to set the calendar. Those are alternative layouts, not the controls Rosputinsky describes on this Kelbert; check the actual case rather than relying on the dial appearance alone.

What do the movement and chronograph feel like?
The article identifies the movement as a Landeron 185. Rosputinsky characterizes its quality as average and describes the chronograph pusher feedback on his watch as short and flat. He also reports reliable timekeeping and chronograph timing in his own experience. These are subjective observations about one example, not laboratory results, a service record, or a guarantee of performance for another watch.
What should you inspect before buying one?
- Dial and date track: Look closely at the lower register, its alternating date marks, and the overall dial condition. Rosputinsky specifically favors a clean dial.
- Hands and luminous material: On his example, he observed tiny rust fragments affecting the central hands and original lume that had faded to pale yellow. These observations are specimen-specific, but they make clear photographs or an in-person inspection worthwhile.
- Calendar controls: Confirm whether the case has the three calendar pushers described on the featured Kelbert, or a different setting arrangement. Ask the seller to demonstrate operation.
- Movement identity and signatures: Compare the movement, dial, and case-back markings. Rosputinsky says many Kelbert chronographs, including his example, are signed in all three places.
- Condition and service evidence: The article does not establish the condition, originality, or service history of watches currently offered for sale. Request documentation and have a qualified watchmaker assess the individual piece.
What is known about Kelbert as a brand?
Rosputinsky’s article says Kelbert Watch Company was founded in 1938, describes it as an importer of Swiss watches, and notes a period address at 608 Fifth Avenue in New York. He also says QXO code names were engraved on movements. This is the brand context reported in that feature; it is not independently established here through archival records. The article notes that many Kelbert chronographs bear signatures on the dial, movement, and case back, making consistency across those locations a useful point to examine rather than proof of authenticity by itself.

What did the article say about price?
Rosputinsky estimated in March 2019 that a Kelbert Date Counter Chronograph with a pristine dial might cost about €600–€1,000. That is a historical estimate, not a current valuation: the article does not establish recent transactions, present-day availability, or the value of any specific watch. Assess current examples individually, taking condition, originality, service evidence, and seller documentation into account.
