The Seiko Think the Earth WN-1 tells time with a rotating miniature globe: its northern-hemisphere Earth turns counterclockwise once every 24 hours, while a separate hand shows the minutes. Developed by Seiko Instruments Inc. for the Think the Earth Project, it began worldwide sales in March 2001. Its display is less familiar than a conventional watch, but the idea is simple once you know what to look for.
How does the WN-1 tell time?
The raised globe is the hour hand. With the North Pole at its center, it rotates counterclockwise to represent Earth’s rotation. A position indicator on the globe shows the hour, and a separate hand indicates minutes. The Earth hand completes one revolution in 24 hours, so this is a 24-hour display rather than the familiar 12-hour dial. The APO Eco-products Directory describes the globe’s motion as following the real Earth’s rotation (APO Eco-products Directory, 2005); a Japanese product listing specifies the 24-hour revolution and separate minute hand (Naturum product listing).
That planetary motion can initially feel counterintuitive: instead of reading a fixed numeral under a stationary pointer, you read the hour from the globe’s position as it moves. Give the watch a moment to orient yourself to the position indicator and the direction of travel.
What is the Seiko Think the Earth WN-1?
The WN-1 was the first product of the Think the Earth Project, developed into a wristwatch by Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII). SII’s 2004 environmental report describes it as a dome-shaped watch whose face is a three-dimensional northern hemisphere. The same report identifies the WS-1 as a southern-hemisphere sibling (SII Environmental Report 2004).

WN-1 and WS-1
The documented distinction is the hemisphere represented: WN-1 shows the northern hemisphere, while WS-1 is identified as its southern-hemisphere counterpart. The available corporate description does not provide a full side-by-side specification, so other differences should not be assumed.
How was the watch designed and packaged?
The APO directory lists three main parts: a base holder with band, a core module, and a bezel. It also describes packaging made from corrugated craft paper, with layers inspired by geological strata and intended to cushion the watch. The box and its 20 included illustration cards could be assembled into a desk clock, giving the packaging a second use (APO Eco-products Directory, 2005).

The directory gives a 10-year battery life as a design specification. That figure does not establish how long a battery in any particular vintage watch will last today, and it does not identify the battery type. A retailer also says the bezel can be removed to expose the crown for setting the time; treat that as retailer-reported operating detail, not as a feature confirmed by the archival directory (DC Vintage Watches).
When did the WN-1 launch?
The APO Eco-products Directory records worldwide sales beginning in March 2001. DC Vintage Watches gives a more precise account, saying the concept began in 1994, a working prototype was completed in 1997, and the official launch took place on February 19, 2001, chosen because it was Nicolaus Copernicus’s birthday. That exact-day chronology and its rationale are the retailer’s account; the archival directory independently establishes the March worldwide-sales timing, not the February date (DC Vintage Watches; APO Eco-products Directory, 2005).
